Re: Display Options with Beige G3?

2009-04-13 Thread Lawrence David Eden

I just looked at this website and it says that using this hack might
make your Mac un-bootable if you are using 10.4.3 and above. What
gives?

No. This is wrong.

It works fine in 10.4.11 on all my older Macs, including two Beige.

You need to try again.

Here is what it says on the MacUpdate web site:

As of 10.4.3 or so, this hack stopped working and started rendering
machines unbootable. Please do not try to run this software on 10.4.3
or above. If you have and you want to get your machine working again,
you need to take:
PCI Extreme 3.1/PCI Extreme.app/Contents/Resources/CoreGraphics
and overwrite:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/
Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/CoreGraphics

Based on this, I'm afraid to try it.

A flashed Radeon 7000 with 64 MB RAM will give you a VGA port, then
you can use any new LCD (you might need a HDMI - VGA adapter), they
are very affordable now. Take the old CRT to a recycling center where
it can be disposed of properly.

i've been using a ViewSonic 930m 19 LCD monitor and an ATI Radeon
9200 video card with my Beige G3 (500 MHz G4 processor) for about two
years now and love 'em. Quartz Extreme is not supported, but I have
had no problems. The combination works well in both Tiger (10.4.11)
and OS 9.2.2. I have the RAM maxed out to 768 MB.

Cheapest is to get a Mac=VGA adapter and you can connect to any
VGA monitor such as a cheap flat panel display.

Better output from a PCI Video card, such as a PCI Radeon 7000
(Mac Edition or flashed PC card). Then you will have faster and
better video output. You can use a good flat panel monitor with
higher resolution.

No, AFAIK all the early Apple CRTs used Apple's ADC connector. This
uses 28V power not available on your G3.

I'd just use a VGA LCD. You may need a VGA adapter, depending on your
video board. You can get a 17 monitor for under $100 if you shop around.

19/20 SVGA LCD displays are so competitively priced there is little
reason NOT to go with one of them.

I have an Envision, and it calibrates quite well, and gives very good
results, this notwithstanding its 75 Hz maximum frame rate. I use it
at 1280 x 1024, millions of colors, on all machines, through a 4-way
USB KVM.

For Beiges, 19 CRTs are a sure thing. These are not as tolerant of
displays, or of KVMs. I use these directly.

For later models, I wouldn't use a CRT ... they're just too heavy,
and too retro.

The very first Apple LCD's used VGA connectors, and will work
perfectly well on that Beige with a Mac- VGA adapter, I've done it.
