Just to clarify:

By door, my original post meant what a later poster more accurately
called the bezel on the front of the tray. I was saying that after
the drive was installed, the bezel on the front of the tray would not
move through the provided hole in the MDD faceplate.

Yes, the drive as a whole must be installed from behind, which I did.

Sorry for any misunderstandings.

I was able to remove the front bezel off the Smurf tower and install a
DVD-ROM into my Blue White G3 without removing the drive's front
bezel, if that's good for anything... :)

In the MDD you don't remove the front bezel, you open it up and remove the
drive cage, so the drive is installed from the inside.

And those come off pretty easily. Usually you push them up and off the
tray; if you look closely you can see where they fit into keyways on
the tray.

Door is too wide to fit through the MDD faceplate, even after
elaborate surgery.

Back to Pioneer.

Optical drive in question was a Samsung.

 Hello,

Also, if necessary, you remove the bezel from the front of the new drive.

For what it's worth I have a G4 MDD that I have installed two Pioneer drives
in. The Liteon Pioneer and Samsung are all the same when it comes to the bezel
on the tray, they MUST be removed to operate in the Machine.
