This sounds like a jumper or cable issue to me. Some people report
that "cable select" setting works on QS, but Apple says cable select
setting begins with the MDD. You could try cable select for BOTH
devices on the bus, or make certain the one device is Master and one
is Slave. I've never heard of a "special setting" for Slave that
involves two jumpers? I've never seen any HD that involves two jumpers
in normal operation. Normally a 2nd jumper either restricts a HD to
lower capacity or speed.

You need a powered USB hub evidently. My keyboard port gives the same
warning, but I sometimes ignore it and haven't had any problems yet,
knock on wood.

HD Question

2009-08-23 Thread Stephen Conrad

Ok, I want to add another (3rd) HD to my new QS
I added one and it works fine.
I stuck one on the same cable (bus) as the Super Drive and I can see
it when i is set as Slave using one jumper (with System Profiler) but
I cannot format it using Disk Utility as Disk Utility doesn't see it.
I tried the Special Setting for Slave (using 2 jumpers) but this
doesn't work either.
So, what do I need to do here?

Also, I plugged a USB Flash drive into the ports on my KB but it says
there is not enough power available. Are these ports usable for Flash
Drives?

Re: HD Question

2009-07-05 Thread A.McCullough

Look at the rear of the drives. Then look here:
http://www.ufsexplorer.com/inf_connect_hdd.php

Given the apparent age of the drives in question (a fast Google lookup
shows none of 'em as "currently available", hence they're older drives
and not currently in production) I'd say it's dang near a certainty that
at least the Samsung and the WD's are PATA. With no manufacturer
mentioned on the generic, you'll have to verify that by looking at the
connectors.

Haven't googled for these particular drives. Basically any relatively
modern HD (Probably more than a few megabytes, and definitely anything
over 1 GB) that has a 40 pin connector will work for you.

You do have a 120GB limit without a lot of futzing around.
