Depending upon the depth of the scratch and the smoothness of the surface, I would think that heat might work better. But I'd definitely test that theory on a scrap piece of the same material first, as you might get shrinking, curling, or any number of other bad results. And if you actually do it to the real thing, make sure that no working components will be damaged by the heat. Automotive paint stores have wet sanding paper of 1000 or even finer grit. Depending on how deep the scratches are you may need to start with 600. Remove the bezel from the machine if possible. This will allow using enough water Modelers supply companies such as Micro-Mark have very fine paper and grades of plastic polish. They have paper as fine as 12,000 grit!
