Permissions and Upgrade Process
Am trying to decide whether to do Archive Install or Erase Install. I was thinking Erase Install might clean up things a bit. I use Macjanitor about every 3 weeks but that's the only maintenance I've done. It's run quite well - I do have a Disk Warrior but I've rarely used it. Actually I buy one and then don't use it, by the time there's a problem I'm on another machine or another OS. Archive Install would be easier. If I do Erase Install would it give me permissions fits trying to drag apps back from an external HD after the upgrade? BTW, the Parents upgrade (from 10.1 to 10.4, Erase Install) went very well. Without a hitch except that I then took my HD home without copying their files back ... LOL. The only time I'll do an erase and install is when I'm setting up a system for a new owner. Otherwise Archiveinstall gives you all the benefits of erase install when it comes to the system and all the benefits of upgrade when it comes to preserving user stuff. The only thing you need to re-install are drivers and preference panes. Doing an erase and install to upgrade a system is just masochism from my point of view. Some people recommend it to clean up the disk. My opinion is that OS X is a robust filesystem, and if you need to clean up the disk fix THAT problem before installing the new OS version. Especially since your system is in good running condition, just go the AI way. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Anne Keller Smith Down to Earth Web Design Beautiful Web Sites that Work http://www.downtoearthweb.com Missed your original post but this is my thinking- a carbon copy cloner cloned system on external firewire HD should be an eligible complete system for the Migration Assistant, meaning that you would not have to drag anything back if you succeeded in migrating. Nothing is perfect- not migrating, not archive and install, and least of all- mere dragging of apps... However, I'd always fully clone a disk then try archive and install FIRST then erase and install NEXT. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
