Aye, it's the only way the video actually *works* without corruption,
but no 3D accel worth writing home about yet. I may have to enable
xorg-edgers to see how it's improved lately; haven't touched it in a
month or so. However I want to see what my options are for 3D accel
that's actually deemed mostly stable.

The G5 is better in every way than the current machine I'm using
otherwise, which includes not spontaneously rebooting when my cat
rubs up against it

Thanks

PowerMac G5 1.8 single - Video card options?

2011-03-07 Thread Brian Kemp
Hi all.

I recently came into ownership of a G5 1.8 (late 2004) with the stock
Nvidia 5200 card in it. I'm looking to upgrade to an ATi card - am I
limited to *just* the Mac editions, or will any ATi AGP 8x card work?
I do need OpenFirmware to be able to init the card initially in case I
need to access the bootloader, but I'm not using OS X.

I got *just* the box the power cord, w/ a zeroed drive - no OS X, no
monitor, no keyboard/mouse. It's the lowest cheapest 1.8 G5 you can
get - no airport, no bluetooth.

I'm doing some very un-Mac things with my setup (ADC-DVI adapter USB-
PS/2 adapter, Ubuntu 10.04). The nouveau drivers are just not quite
there yet - they're much better than nv, but I'd like 3D acceleration
direct rendering so that means right now ATi cards are my only
option.

I'm experiencing some severe sticker shock with the $200+ price tag
for ATi video cards for the G5, so I figured I'd ask if anyone has any
ideas.

Thanks for reading, HAND
