It appears to be a problem with a USB device or port, or possibly a USB PCI
card, if you have one. (I believe that the onboard USB ports also make use
of IOPCIFamily, too, although I'm not positive.)

The crash happened in the usb driver :

 com.apple.driver.AppleUSBOHCI

The dependencies are system libraries that the USB driver was using at the
 time of the crash:

 com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily
 com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily

What were you doing when it happened? What USB devices were plugged in?

The one port has the following:

USB KB (which has the Mouse and a Targus Card Reader which has a
CompactFlash Card (FC-32M) in it.

The other port has the following:

4 Port Hub which has a USB Flash Drive, 2 Digital Cameras (one is plugged in
to a power cord and the other is not always plugged into the USB Hub) and a
USB 4-Port Hub. This 2nd Hub has 3 USB Flash Drives and another 4 Port USB
2.0 Hub. NOW, this 3rd Hub has a power cord and only has 2 USB Flash Drives
in it (I think the other 2 ports have died).

The 2nd USB Hub needs a DC5V Power Cord (none of my cords fit it)
The camera with no power cord does not have any place to plug one in.

It's pretty simple really, you could say that it's plug 'n play. The
biggest issue is making sure the connector 'latch' is released before you
pull the connector away from the logic board. Besides that is just the
 physical mounting of the PSU.

Subject: Quicksilver issue
Date:Donnerstag 07 Oktober 2010N
From:Stephen Conrad khel...@gmail.com
To: g3-5-list g3-5-list@googlegroups.com

 Mac: G4 Quicksilver (800 MHz)
 1.5 GB SDRAM
Mine is a Power Mac G3 BW 350 MHz PCI
1.0 GB SDRAM

 3 HD, 1 CD-ROM
1 HD, 1 CD-ROM

USB Ports have 5 USB sticks, a Memory Card and my Olmpus Digital Camera
plugged into them (see below for detail) plus the KB
I use a USB 2.0 PCI card in addition to the two USB 1.x ports. The keyboard is
connected to one USB 1.x port, the mouse is connected to the second USB 1.x
board.

Back of the Mac has a port which has 1 card plus the Olypus. Also has a
cord to a non-Powered Hub. This has a Powered Hub plugged into it. (I need
a 5V cord to power this thing and cannot find one)
I have a powered hub connected to one USB 2.0 port of the USB PCI card. The
power cable is not plugged into the hub though for reasons … read on!

Powered Hub has 2 USB Sticks plugged into it,

KP has the Memory Card and my Logitech USB Mouse
My hub has an external 2.5 hard disk plugged into it or a memory sick or two
or three…

PROBLEM: First off, this NEVER happens when I use the machine

When I am away it randomly shuts down.
It is NOT set to sleep under Energy Saver

Under System Preferences I see nothing about shutting down
My PROBLEM: The Power Mac doesn't even start when I press the button IF the
hub is connected to its 5V external power unit. If I unplug it, it starts just
fine (with a chime…).

Now, I blew out (with me providing the air) what little dust was inside (I
will get a new can of air today) and under the tower.
I did that too.

What else can I do? I have not had this problem until recently (never with
the Smurf or previous machines, some of which had many more HDs hooked up
 (externally but same power strip)
No idea. When it comes to USB stuff some computers act just strangely. I had a
laptop that rebooted reproducibly if I touchted the USB port with an external
USB device – must have shorted some circuit or something. No damage done, just
lost all unsaved files :-(

But if you find something: I'm interested too!

I know that was no help at all… Sorry.

Cheers,
Andreas aka Mac User #330250

Re: Quicksilver issue

2010-10-07 Thread James Morgan
My MDD G4's also only shut down when I was not using them. But after
a while they began to occasionally refuse to start. Got a glowing
light in the start button when I pushed it but no start. This
progressed to no starting at all. The shutting down on it's own was
the beginning of the end.

I went through guilt trips. I thought maybe I had not kept the G4's
clean enough and had overheated them. Ect. Then I found out the power
supply in the MDD G4's have issues and it wasn't my fault.

I don't know of any way to check to see if it is a failing power
supply but I certainly recommend that you back up your entire
computer to an external hard drive. And start watching for a good
used power supply.

I went through guilt trips. I thought maybe I had not kept the G4's clean
enough and had overheated them. Ect. Then I found out the power supply in
the MDD G4's have issues and it wasn't my fault.

I don't know of any way to check to see if it is a failing power supply
but I certainly recommend that you back up your entire computer to an
external hard drive. And start watching for a good used power supply.

Well, it will start up but sometimes I need to unplug the USB drives to get
it to see the main HD (as the start-up HD I do believe)

As for a new PS, I'd have no idea how to install one.

Well, this only happens when I am not using it.
Any way to check (that does not involve paying someone)?

I am looking for a nice multi-tip power cord so I can plug in the other
 hub.
Walmart used to sell them but the only ones they sell now are for use in
your car, you plug them into your cigarette lighter.

 Mac: G4 Quicksilver (800 MHz)
 1.5 GB SDRAM

 3 HD, 1 CD-ROM
USB Ports have 5 USB sticks, a Memory Card and my Olmpus Digital Camera
plugged into them (see below for detail) plus the KB

Back of the Mac has a port which has 1 card plus the Olypus. Also has a
cord to a non-Powered Hub. This has a Powered Hub plugged into it. (I need a
5V cord to power this thing and cannot find one)
Powered Hub has 2 USB Sticks plugged into it,

KP has the Memory Card and my Logitech USB Mouse

PROBLEM: First off, this NEVER happens when I use the machine

When I am away it randomly shuts down.
It is NOT set to sleep under Energy Saver

Under System Preferences I see nothing about shutting down

Now, I blew out (with me providing the air) what little dust was inside (I
will get a new can of air today) and under the tower.

What else can I do? I have not had this problem until recently (never with
the Smurf or previous machines, some of which had many more HDs hooked up
 (externally but same power strip)
