As was also previously mentioned, the main reason for the jumper was because during the early days of SATA implementations some controllers did not correctly implement the auto-negotiation of the connection speed. As time passed and these controllers passed into history, the jumpers appear to have gone away or used for other purposes. At any rate, correctly implemented SATA should not require any jumpers on a SATA drive at least that's my understanding. If it were me I would attempt to narrow down where the fault might be. (I haven't bought hard drives other than by mail order in so long that I really have no idea what a retailer might do in this situation). In any case, I would suggest you do find out what is what soon. If the drive IS bad then the longer you wait the harder it may be to get whomever you bought the drive from to replace it. You could most likely still replace it under the manufacturer's warranty, but not as easily. What ill save data is backing data on an external (or internal second HD) at least once a month. Using CCC is a cinch to do that and usual takes a very short time. Cable looks fine. Conects well. Can one test it in one way or another? I've wondered about this, you keep saying cable when there are two cables plural for any SATA HD, one is the data cable, the other is the power cable. Generally speaking SATA HDs do NOT use jumpers, and further, the jumper locations between different HD makes models are often very different, so the idea of moving a jumper from an old drive to a new drive may seem like a good idea, in reality it's likely the cause of your problem here. As Alex said, EXACT model(s) of the HD(s) would be nice. In the future, the initial posting should include ALL the exact hardware involved, which would include the exact Mac model w/ RAM, HD, OS version, etc, and the replacement HD make model. Tried it. I meant pushing a small button on the keyboard does NOT reset your SMU, and whatever you did, it wasn't reseting the SMU. Older controller chipsets had problems when it initially moved to SATA gen II, so some drives had the ability to force negotiation at 1.5Gbps. Probably not. How about the cable ... is that new? a good one? Connected well at both ends ... didn't come loose when the machine was shut? Cable looks fine. Conects well. Can one test it in one way or another? I would also check to see if the iMac G5 has a SMU you can reset?? Tried it. Found the small button on the keyboard. No luck. only one of the pins had snapped where the connector sitts on the main board but that was enough to stop the drive being seen at all. The pins on the drive looks as the pins on the old drive. OK. I say, 1) The old drive didn't really have issues. Rather the problem is someplace else such as a bad SATA cable or a poorly seated connector. Or maybe even something is wrong on the G5's mainboard. Have you tried any type of diagnostic program? What kind of diagnostics cen be used to figure out if the mainboard is toast? Try hooking it up to another computer or hook it up through an external case. I have an old, unbreakable, Quicksilver nearby. Can I try out a 500 gig serial ATA disc on that old warhorse? Thnks for all your advice. T Not unless you have a PATA to SATA adapter or a SATA PCI card installed. I have a SeriTek/1S2 PCI card in my QS 2002 with a 500GB Seagate SATA and it works great. Without having any idea whether or not any of them might apply here are some things that come to mind: 1) The old drive didn't really have issues. Rather the problem is someplace else such as a bad SATA cable or a poorly seated connector. Or maybe even something is wrong on the G5's mainboard. Have you tried any type of diagnostic program? 2) Even if the old drive was bad you still might not have seated the connectors properly when attaching the replacement? 3) You might have been the victim of bad luck and gotten a new drive that is DOA. It happens. The way I would attempt to narrow down the possibilities is to try both the old and new drives in another platform. Either another computer or an external enclosure which supports SATA. Folks, Installed a brand new 500 gig hd in a G5 iMac. The old one had issues. For reasons unknown Disc Utility has problems even formating the damned thing. And refuses to partion it. Disc Warrior does not even see the new drive. What can be wrong? Anders Before pronouncing the drive dead -- in addition to trying all those other suggestions -- see what happens with a magic cable. That can tell you if the problem is the drive itself or not. Greetings, If your Disk Utilities can see the new disk, select the disk and click on info and tell us what it says! If you are able to see and select the drive then use erase before trying to partition the disk!
