What do you mean by crashes? What happens?

(I have an early 2008 MacBook and when I plug in a firewire cable the
power cuts off, so it's pretty obvious to me that I've got a hardware
problem. But I suppose I could also describe that as it crashes.)

Without further information it could be anything. So far we don't
even know if your car won't go because you didn't put the key in the
ignition or you left the garage door open.

We need details. Which Mac, speed, HD, memory, OS, fully updated?,
network set-up, etc. And a complete description of the crash - Is
some app crashing? Or is the OS itself panicing? What do the logs
say? etc etc...

Sounds to me like a bent pin in the port. Next door neighbor had a usb port
that worked but was very flaky. Would even shut his computer off at times when
he plugged a device in. The problem with his port was one of the pins was bent
and would touch the metal ground of the cage of the socket or plug when the
plug was inserted. The result was his machine would just power off suddenly.

If your computer shuts down when you plug in the network cable your
logic board is foo. Does this happen with both ethernet ports?

Before I went any further I would reinstall and archive the system to

Look in ConsoleLog Files for Crash Reporter or Panic Reporter
depending upon the type of crash.

A little less drastic option that would likely fix any problems would
be to reinstall the latest Combo Update. If that fails, THEN is the
time for a System reinstallation.
