Thanks, Dana System Preferences -- International -- Language; either drag and drop or (if not in the list: Edit List...) In German: Systemeinstellungen -- Landeseinstellungen -- Sprachen (Liste bearbeiten...) It takes effect once the applications are restarted. You may want to log off and back in again to catch every application. I just tried it to change my system language to English. Worked well for my user account - everything was English after a loging off and back in again. (There may be another way to restart at least the dock...) One thing I couldn't change is the login screen itself. It remained German, so I restarted Mac OS X to double-check but it stayed German still. I wander if there is a way to completetly set a different system language. Mac OS X is based on Unix and it's alway *very* easy to set a different locale (mostly it is an environment variable that controls the language and everything). Peace to everyone! You're right, English and German have common roots; English is a little less away from Latin as the mother of most of the European languages, and the grammar is the easiest of the three. Re: Was is das? Safari in Deutch?
Thanks Kris for the response (and to all others), First, the combo Update for 10.5.8 requires 10.5.7 to be installed (according to the Apple info. on the web). So, 10.5.7 then to 10.5.8 - no matter, the system did not withstand the update anyway (I downloaded it as a combo update, not a live install from Software update). In the end, manipulation of the International preference Panel did not work - I had to go and trash the system configuration preference in the System folder; not a good sign. I believe this situation has other issues, and I'll post a separate thread for dialogue. Thank you all again.
