Re: external wireless device for mac mini
I'm sure this question was pretty much answered already but I just wanted to add another option which is what I did for this old PowerBook G3 Wall-street I'm still banging on. I got the universal WIFI adapter by IOGear. (model number GWU627) for less than $25 on sale at newegg.com. Instead of a card to plug in to the side this is a small dongle that you plug an ethernet cord into and then into the ethernet port of the laptop. It also needs power via USB but it is very easy to set up and even though I'm only running OS X 10.2.8 I had no problem configuring it up even on this old machine. The reason I went this route rather than a PC card is because if I want to I can also use this for a Blueray player, Smart TV, game consoles or anything with a ethernet port. It is also 802.11 B/G/N compatible with up to 150 Mbps transfer speeds. (which is almost fast than this old 266MHz processor can handle though the 10BASE-T ethernet port on it throttles it down to 10Mbps) Just thought I'd share another option out there to think about. Your TP-Link solution must be a different model than mine, as my TP-Link model TL-MR3040 is a little larger than my WNCE2001-100NAR. My TP-Link with it's built-in battery, is about the size of the older 80gb iPod and the NetGear is just a bit smaller than that. There are now newer versions of the NetGear WNCE2001-100NAR. I bought mine refurbished from Tiger Direct, or NewEgg, plus a discount coupon and the total with shipping came to less than $12. You will need to spend a little more than that. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: external wireless device for mac mini
I recently relocated my MacMini and even though I have the Wireless and BlueTooth modules inside my MacMini, I can't connect to my Wireless LAN from my MacMini, so I have been using one of my two external wireless solutions to connect to my WLAN. The wireless solution I am using right now is my TP-Link model TL-MR3040. It is more expensive than other solutions, as it has many different modes of operation and it's own built-in battery. I bought to use with my G4 PowerBook's while running MorphOS3.1 instead of MacOSX, as MorphOS3.1 doesn't have a driver for the PB internal wireless AirPort Extreme yet. The TP-Link having it's own battery gives me wireless internet for my PowerBook's without using any power from the PB battery, so this gives me more portable computing time. A cheaper solution is the NetGear WNCE2001-100NAR that I use on my brand new "First Contact" AmigaOne X1000 (a PA Semi PPC powered computer, the only non-military/Personal Computer that uses the PA6T dual core 1.8GHz PPC CPU) and runs the latest release of AmigaOS4.1 Update 5, public release Jan. of 2012. You can power the NetGear solution from a USB port, if you have a free USB port you are not using on your MacMini, or it also comes with it's own "Wall Wart" PSU that you can plug in and power it. Both wireless solutions work well for me and it beats drilling holes in walls or ceilings and running Ethernet cables all over the house. Sorry for the long explanation and the included AmigaOS4.1.5 update, just thought a few on this list might enjoy reading that Amiga is still being developed and the reports of it's death have been greatly exaggerated.
