The nice thing about those iMacs is they came with firewire. If you
want to add a drive it would be faster and cheaper to buy an external
case. You can even boot off of it, and it would run faster than the
onboard ata. You also wouldn't have the heat problems, or the hard
drive limits.

 Funny, I just pulled the optical drive from a G3 iMac.  There isn't
 enough room there.  Part of the drive hangs over the logic board.  A
 drive in your spare space would conflict with the logic board.  Also,
 there is no available drive interface.  If you pulled the optical there
 MIGHT be enough space.  You'd need to make your own IDE cable as the
 logic board connector is 44 pins, as is the optical drive connector.

 Much simpler (and possible) to put a single larger drive in.

iMac 2nd HDD

Hello Listers,

I have an iMac G3 slot load, and I would like to put in another HDD  
(2 in total). There is quite alot of spare space in the drive mount.  
I would rather not remove the CD rom.

Do you think it would be possible? Without over-heating obviously.

I wouldn't do it.  The power supply isn't floating in extra power. 
And that age iMac would be very susceptible to heat problems.
