Summary: Lost ICQ messages after connection timeout

Initial Comment:
Using the oscar protocol, messages are never received by the recipient before
Gaim finally detects a connection timeout.

I don't know how much control there is over this, but at least once per day my
internet connection times out (I imagine due to an IP address change or
something). During the time before Gaim realises, I can still send messages to
ICQ contacts, however, the messages never arrive and I end up pasting my
history into the chat window of the recipient after we both discover some part
of the conversation is missing. As you can imagine, it is a tad frustrating.

Here is the latest example reconstructed from my chat and system logs:

 +++ 279680 vient de se connecter @ 26. 02. 07 21:37:16
...
...
(22:13:58) donn: ... (last message seen by recipient)
(22:15:01) donn: ...
(22:15:07) donn: ...
(22:15:18) donn: ...
(22:15:37) donn: ...
(22:17:48) donn: ...
(22:21:07) donn: ...
(22:21:29) donn: ...
(22:22:38) donn: ...
(22:23:15) donn: ...
(22:23:22) donn: ... (beginning to wonder why there is no response...)
(22:37:13) donn: ...
(22:42:00) Contact1: ... (recipient sends message unaware of all previous
messages)
 +++ 279680 vient de se déconnecter @ 26. 02. 07 22:45:03
 +++ 279680 vient de se connecter @ 26. 02. 07 22:46:19

All messages from 22:15:01 until 22:37:13 were lost. From the system logs, it
appears gaim detects that the connection timed out at 22:45:03, but in fact a
message was received from the recipient before that. I can't explain that. The
recipient is also using Gaim.

Is it possible to change the connection timeout somehow? I can't find anything
in any options.

Summary: gaim crashes when I try to add a jabber account

Initial Comment:
my msn account loads just fine, but when I try to add a jabber account (gmail),
gaim crashes. I am using Yoper linux, 2.1.0-4 and followed the instructions
given in the link to google in the FAQ.
I have tried numerous times, with the same results each time. I have tried
while connected to MSN and while not.
I don't think it'll be much help, but below is the backtrace.

I tried to install gaim using apt-get, and below is what I got...

apt-get install gaim

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gaim: Depends: libao but it is not installable
Depends: libao.so.2 but it is not installable

Summary: Crash on adding a Buddy Icon

Initial Comment:
System: OpenSuse Linux 10.1
It's updated each day.

I changed the Buddy Icon on ICQ or AIM accounts and the gaim crashes. The same
story when I use the global change-button for the icon at the bottom of the
buddy-list-window. In the added backtrace there is the global-icon-change.

The picture I tried to add (don't think that it causes the crash but to be
sure) is added as well.

Thanks and keep on coding
Carsten

Summary: GAIM segfault on startup during auto-login

Initial Comment:
Gaim 1.5.0-12.el4 segfaults on startup. It appears to be in the process of
logging into my accounts. The accounts in use are a Jabber, an MSN, and an ICQ
one. I'm using rhel 4 on x86-64. Pretty sure there was an auto-update over the
weekend.

Backtrace follows.

The same is happening here. I've narrowed it down a bit: only connecting
to Google Talk causes a crash. ICQ, AIM and Yahoo accounts work but MSN
says "Unable to authenticate: Unable to connect". I'm using RHEL4, kernel
2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp, Gaim 1.5.0-12.el4.

When talking to someone who is using the new Windows Live, their buddy icon
doesn't show up.

Could it be possible that this is related to #1660218 ?

Summary: 2.0beta6 does not compile on Solaris 9 w/gcc 3.4.6

Initial Comment:
Configured gaim with:

./configure --disable-rpath --disable-audio --disable-tcl --disable-tk
--disable-gtkspell --disable-deprecated --disable-gevolution --with-x
--enable-gnutls --enable-cyrus-sasl --disable-perl

"make" subsequently reports (in part):

make[3]: Entering directory `/src/NEW/gaim-2.0.0beta6/console'
(various warnings)
gntgaim.c:46:20: getopt.h: No such file or directory
(various errors tripped as the result of no getopt)

See attached file for the above in more detail
(captured via "make >& errs")

I believe we've discussed this before, with an earlier
beta of 2.0, but I've been unable to locate that while
searching today. My apologies if that's due to poor
searching on my part.

You can just copy gtk/getopt.h to console/ and not give
--disable-consoleui to configure. That should build gaim-text.

Thanks, sadrul. I'll pull the source when CVS when I get a chance
and try compiling it here. (In the interim, I'd added
--disable-consoleui,
and 2.0.0.beta6 did compile and run. Now I can finally get to see
what the curses interface looks like!)

Summary: HTML text formatting.

Initial Comment:
Gaim encodes stuff in a HTML format.

Even though I turn off all formatting (pressing the button that should reset
everything), it still formats signs like quotes and the like into HTML crap.

AFAIK there is no way to turn this off as of yet.

You are correct it seems.

The problem was gone when OTR was not used.. Heh, figures I didn't think
of the most obvious. :]

Thanks for the help, I'll go bring this issue up with the OTR folk.

Yes, I believe I have seen this before, and that is why I asked about
third-party plugins. Try unloading OTR, and see if the problem is fixed.
If it is, you can take it up with the OTR people.

Are you joking? :]

I'm using Gaim in the first place because it's the only client that can
talk securely with Miranda's unicode 0.6.7..

Are you saying that the problem is not with Gaim - but with the OTR
plugin?

I only have this problem with Gaim - Kopete for example does not give me
these problems, and then I'm using the exact same protocol..

The problem is occurring using the Jabber protocol, and version seem to be
irrelevant. The same problem occurs using the newest version (2.0.0beta6)
and 1.5.0.

Humm, I'm currently using the newest OTR plugin for Gaim to chat..
And that's about all the plugins I'm using, except for the "auto-get"
plugin (autoaccept 2.0.0beta6)

What protocol is this (many protocols *require* that certain elements be
HTML entity-encoded)? What version of Gaim? Do you have any third-party
plugins loaded? What plugins (both included and third-party) *do* you have
loaded?

advantis, I followed your suggestions and prepared myself an avatar scaled
at 96x96 (24 true color) PNG.
It worked; yahoo messenger people could see it.
Now, (after a week) I just changed the image with another (same settings).
I asked some people in my list, but they said it didn't update. I restarted
gaim and.. nothing. They're seeing the previous avatar.

After seeing the duplicate bugs and their comments, I took a look in
GAIM's icon cache to see what format are the pictures coming from users of
Yahoo Messenger, Trillian and possibly others.

I found out that GAIM allows any image size while all the others are 96x96
pixels. To be more specific, I found these three formats (according to
"file") to form 99% of the icon cache (all of the on the Yahoo! network,
the other 1% are from GAIM (non 96x96 PNGs), an one picture being a JPEG
from Google Talk and a 5-6 are HTTP sessions/errors from Yahoo when GAIM
tried retrieving avatars):

PNG image data, 96 x 96, 8-bit colormap, non-interlaced
PNG image data, 96 x 96, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
PNG image data, 96 x 96, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced

I didn't run any thorough tests, but I took one "96 x 96, 8-bit colormap"
from the cache and set it as my avatar. And it is displayed OK in the
Windows Yahoo Messenger client.

My guess is that GAIM 1.5 used to enforce these limits on the Yahoo!
network and stopped doing it somewhere on the way to 2.0. Base on this
guess, the fix would look like this:
1. large images:
   a. shrink image so one of the smallest dimension is 96. Crop the other
dimension to 96, keeping the image center.
   b. shrink image so the largest dimension is 96. Center the image on the
smallest dimension. Fill remaining space with white so the result is
96x96.
2. small images:
   a. same as 1a, but stretch instead of shrink
   b. same as 1b, but stretch instead of shrink

Now, I don't know which of a and b is better to use. I'm not sure how YM
does it, but so far it looks like point a. Why point a? Because it's easier
to crop than to center+fill.

The local-set avatar is visible on other GAIM 2.0.0beta5, 2.0.0beta3.1
clients when I'm using 2.0.0beta5. On GAIM 1.5.1 the Yahoo-set avatar is
visible when I'm using 2.0.0beta5. On YM neither one is visible, but a
white square is displayed instead when I'm using GAIM 2.0.0beta5. Any ideas
why this is happening?

./configure --disable-rpath --disable-audio --disable-tcl --disable-tk
--disable-gtkspell --disable-deprecated --disable-gevolution --with-x
--enable-gnutls --enable-cyrus-sasl --disable-perl

"make" subsequently reports (in part):

searching today. My apologies if that's due to poor
searching on my part.

gaim is crashing shortly after startup, yesterday I just waited a few minutes
and it started and ran for a day before crashing again. Today I can't start it
without it crashing shortly after logging in to my Yahoo and Google Talk
accounts. It was initially crashing with the non-debug version but it is
repeatable with the debug version.

Summary: Socket Error 10060

Initial Comment:
AIM and MSN won't connect, but every other protocol will. Have tried disabling
firewall, without router and reinstalled. AIM reports error socket #10060.

It is not my firewall, I have tried it without my firewall, and did try
contacting McAfee and its not them. I've even called my ISP and they said
that they don't block anything.

I don't know what "make them a system service in McAfee" means, I've never
used the mcafee firewall.

10060 means "Connection Timed out" - your firewall is almost certainly the
culprit.

My only suggestion is to look at your firewall documentation and/or search
online - if the firewall isn't letting gaim's traffic through, there isn't
much we can do to until it is configured to allow gaim to use the ports
listed in the faq.

yes I have tried to make them a system service in McAfee. This did not
resolve the problem.

Are you using Norton Internet Security or some other crappy software
firewall? If so, see the note at http://gaim.sf.net/win32#faq

Summary: GAIM doesn't update contact list after suspend

Initial Comment:
When I'm online with GAIM (beta6) over ICQ, and I suspend my computer and later
resume it, the contact list isn't updated, so that contacts which are now
online aren't visible but contacts which have gone offline are still online.
Also when people have sent me messages while the computer was suspended I don't
get them on resume. When I disconnect and reconnect manually everything is fine
again, and the new messages are polled.
IMHO this is because GAIM doesn't recognize the connection drop on suspend,
like the original ICQ client (and for other protocols as well) it should
recognize if the network connection drops, and then disconnect and
auto-reconnect when the connection is there again. This would fix this
behaviour as well.

Summary: GAIM segfault on startup during auto-login

Initial Comment:
Gaim 1.5.0-12.el4 segfaults on startup. It appears to be in the process of
logging into my accounts. The accounts in use are a Jabber, an MSN, and an ICQ
one. I'm using rhel 4 on x86-64. Pretty sure there was an auto-update over the
weekend.

Backtrace follows.

[Gaim-bugs] [ gaim-Bugs-1668816 ] ICQ sign-on causes "unable to add" error

Summary: ICQ sign-on causes "unable to add" error

Initial Comment:
There are at least two mutually very similar bugs: bug #1641523 and bug
#1641580. And both are, IMHO, closed groundlessly. I believe they are distinct
from bug #1586522 (which was referred, when bug #1658982 was closed as
duplicit). Thus, I am trying to reopen the issue.

The bugs #1641523 and #1641580 say the same what I am suffering now:
Immediately after upgrading Gaim from 2.0.0-b5 to 2.0.0-b6, I started to face
already mentioned error message ("Unable to Add: Could not add the buddy 1 for
an unknown reason. The most common reason for this is that you have max number
of allowed buddies in your buddy list."). Obviously, the message could not be
true for me.

I hope, the association of my error message with beta4 (as suggests bug
#1586522) does not apply to me, too: I am sure I was running at least beta3 and
beta5 (and maybe also beta4), and neither of them had similar symptom. Also,
the error message is not triggered by any buddy-list activity. I am only trying
to get online with my ICQ account.

For the bug #1641523, the developer suggests to unload nautilus plugin. I am
not much sure, what this is, but none of my plugins has word 'Nautilus' in its
name or description. All in all, I have enabled only 5 of some 27 plugins. I
also checked my nautilus plugins, and only one of them had Gaim in its
description -- and it is not installed (and never was).

To provide more feedback, which might be very closely related with the origin
of mentioned error message, I'd like to mention one more thing, which got worse
after upgrading to beta6. All of my ICQ buddies now I see as blocked or ignored
(I cannot distinguish these two emblems). When I right click on the buddy and I
select "Unblock", I receive very similar error message. Only proper ICQ UIN is
filled.

A propos, I was not successful with building my *.deb installation file (most
likely a mistake in Debian stuff). So I needed to obtain some ready-made. When
I run "gdb gaim" with this build, and follow the suggestions, the application
fails with "Program exited with code 0177." Thus I am providing just very basic
info. Kernel: 2.6.20.1, os: Debian Ubuntu Edgy, architecture: x86_64, Gaim:
2.0.0-b6.
