Re: [Audyssey] Advanced games

2006-05-30 Thread Søren Jensen
Hi.

If you want a accessible game for sighted, you should try a game called
Silent Hill 4 (The room.)

It's a adventure / action game, where you walk in Henrys nightmares. It's a
very scary game, and it's supports 5.1 surround sound. It's very user
friendly for blind people, because you can play it without the mouse.

Last time I played the game, I couldn't remember how to use my weapon. But
if I could remember it, I have finally knocked this nasty monster down to
the floor!

If you want to know more about the game or how to play it, we could start a
new subject called Silent Hill or something.

I plan to contact the company Konami there have made the game, and ask them
to make the game more accessible. It's really a cool game!

For the first time you play it, you must play it together with a sighted
person to understand what's going on.

Best regards Søren.

Subject: [Audyssey] Advanced games

 Hello,
I thought i'd branch this thread off the original one, as it's more
along the lines of advanced games vs. any particular game.
First and foremost i want to say, before i get in to any comments, that
i applaud every blind game developer past and present wether i've bought
your game or not. I think it is commendable that your doing or have done
blind game development, i'll have more to say about this in a minute.
I don't want to go in to to much personal history on myself, i've never
been good at it, but i've been blind since birth, i'm of the legally blind
category. I can see light perception only out of the right eye, and as of
now, shadows, light, and contrasting colors from the other. There was a
 time
when my vision was better, and during that time before it started going
south and i had to have sergery, i was able to play sighted games. I
 started
out with the old atari 2600, progressed to the 7800 and my last sighted
system was the original Nintendo. Since then games have become to
graphically intensive for me to follow. But what i liked about those early
systems were i found it chalenging. My personal favorites were star
 masters,
missile command, chop lifter, pitfall, and poll position in the old atari
26/7800, and mario 1 only, some kung fu judo game that i can't remember
 it's
title, solaris, for the nintendo, and probably more in all three game
systems that i can't think of their names. Some games i never won, i just
played and played them for hours, some of them were two player games like
poll position or i could race, the two player games i especially liked i
played baseball, on nintendo with my dad, rarely won, but i had a great
 time
doing it, we both did. I miss those days. Now i see my brother playing
online games, diablo2, star craft, games i don't have a clue how they
 work,
but i would love to get in to that. I guess what i'm saying after all the
historic look back, is that while as i said above i am greatful and think
it's great the developers have given us as blind consumers games to play,
 i
am one who feels that advanced games, on the par with those of the
 sighted,
multiplayer, online game play, games with stories, chalenges, or puzzles,
 or
games that you can spend a rainy saturday afternoon with say your dad or
brother or something, and just have fun, those are what i'd like to see.
Just my two cents.
Dave.

In a post a few months back, I expressed the opinion that the current
development paradigm in which one-person companies, or at most very
small shops are the only ones doing this work cannot produce the
kinds of titles you are looking for. Until game development can
actually support a developer and his/her family as a full-time
profession, there is an upper limit on the complexity of games that
can be created.

Hi David.
Perhaps, but then the game would become to easy. For example you would
automatically target shield or main power, and knock them out the ship
would be over as your mext shot would take it out.
I know that ideas seam pretty good at the time they are made, but as I
have found way to often once actually introduced in to a game like STFC
it is hard to balance the game out again.

david wrote:

 Hi, Ryan.
I tend to agree with you. I have nothing against the devs making simple
arcade games etc for the blind, but as a market the blind game market
needs to expand in to more complex games. More use of 3D environments,
virtual 3D audio, and more complex enemy AI.
For me personally many of the games available are not advanced enough to
hold my interest for long. The space invader clones are all good, but I
get tired of them rather quickly. I have an interest in games that are
more advanced. Lonewolf and Tank Commander have more skill involved in
them. That is why USA Games will be also making simulations and
experiment with other forms of games more along the lines of sighted
 games.

 Ryan Strunk wrote:

 Thomas,

 I'll be frank with you:
I think blind gamers are far too used to being catered to; I'm not saying
you're doing this, but I pose it as food for thought.
You and I both have had the experience of playing mainstream games for
 the
sighted, and I am certain you enjoyed them as much as I did.
The problem I find with many of the games that have been produced for the
blind community is that they are lacking in complexity, however.
To keep this short, I would suggest that if you're thinking of putting
together a 3D game, do it. If some people don't understand, they'll
 learn,
and for those of us who are longing for something of this sort, you'll
 have
 several satisfied customers.

Re: [Audyssey] Trek 2000 .. Tholians

2006-05-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, David.
You can attack and destroy all the enemy bases. The only problem with
Tholian bases they are harder than heck to kill because they can only be
killed by phasers, and sometimes a mine.
One of my favorite tactics is to attack a Tholian base. Get the Tholians
running like mad to come in andsave the base, drop a mine, and run.
Usually you can kill the base and 1 or more Tholian ships that way. One
time I got lucky enough to blow up the entire Tholian fleet and a base.

Re: [Audyssey] Advanced games

Hi.
That is basically true. There is certainly an amount of advanced games
that can be made out of the work at home shops, but at some point the
developer has to collect his or her SSI check or get a real job to put
food on the table. The game company is just a side hobby.

Re: [Audyssey] Advanced games

2006-05-30 Thread Lorana Chanicut
And in the end, I know you're right. One-person teams just aren't going to
be able to pull off the complexity. The only thing I can think of is to
come at it from the other side, and encourage game developers who program
for the sighted user to include pieces of accessibility that a blind person
can use. I think this will be least intrusive for card games, and grow
gradually more complex as you move to board games and then on to adventure
games and so forth. And I don't think it will be easy to persuade
developers to do this.

Re: [Audyssey] conspiricy theory, the future of the blind gaming industry

2006-05-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Shaun.
I don't honestly think we have seen the end of blind games. Your
opinion, which I am sure is shared by others, is the pecimistic view
long term. The aspect you seam to miss however is as long is there are
blind programmers who know how to write computer programs, have a desire
to write games, accessible games will continue. The agdev-newbies
comunity is a forem where I am attempting to pass on my skills, knolege,
so that a new generation of blind programmers can be made.
What's more at some point if blind programmers were to use the GPL
mottle and make engines open source then anyone with a nack for
programming can maintain and update games. This doesn't work for games
under the commercial license, but were a game to be made open source it
would have a long life time ahead of it.
I've actually conceptually thought about some ideas for making open
source games. Especially, ones that were multiplatform for Mac, Linux,
and PC. Once I get my Linux reinstalled and all upgraded to current I
might actually look at that possability.

[Audyssey] Golf difficulty factor

2006-05-30 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Brenda,

I was wrong. It appears that it is actually the lower the difficulty factor
number the harder the hole is. Because as I added up the numbers for the first
three original courses the totals got progressively lower.

BTW they do not average out to be the rating number. I will work on that and
see if I can't figure something out.

BFN
 Jim

Re: [Audyssey] Golf difficulty factor

2006-05-30 Thread brenda green
Hmm, don't know what to say then. You would think the difficulty level for
the holes would determine the rating of the course. Do you want to send me
the information for the courses that generated the rating on its own. I'll
put it into excel and see if it can come up with something. I'll let the
program do the calculations and see if I can come up with what it used for a
rating.

Re: [Audyssey] conspiricy theory, the future of the blind gaming industry

2006-05-30 Thread shaun everiss
true.
Opensource will continue without question.
It just scares me that when we eventually get the sighted interested
they could go either of 2 ways.
Either and this is in my opinion extremely rare, but I may be totally
wrong, here not going to happen is actually work along side us.
Its just that the paying type game industry may be over.
Sertainly opensource and freeware will live on.
The only other way is that the blind and sighted could form big
companies some how.
We then could go into bigger and bigger companies including sighted,
and maybe we could hold our own.
I guess all I am saying is don't rush stuff to much.
It also brings out the question how many games do we have actually?
If we exclude the opensource market, agrip and agdev, kitchensinc
since thats free and in fact every freeware game around.
We have several names.
usagames, gma, pcs, and maybe bavisoft.
bavisoft has 2 games.
gmagames have 3 games.
pcs have a few games mostly dos but going to windows
then there is l-works, who have around 4 games and only really 2
actually count as purchacible items.
We also have pb-games and thats another single game.
I don't know how much all this adds up to but its not much.
We also have bsc games.
Now if we cut out all the oldstyle and arcade games that the sighted
wouldn't want anyway this includes all the stuff draconis makes since
its essentually arcade, we have trek2k, sod, gtc, lw and stfc.
I don't know wether to count the bavisoft games as they have 0 replay
value really.
even if I counted those in we actually have very few actual
action/strat games that sighted would actually want.
there is terraformas by pin interactive but even then as I said thats
still small.
I'm not saying stop the music, i don't want to stay behind the river
for the rest of time, just be vary carefull in approaching it.
