I used to use it at school in typing class... I used to play the old Eman
games on a friend's computer from a floppy. Those games were neat ... I
wish someone would convert them over to Windows one of these days.

I didn't know there was a space invaders game ... has it been released
yet? I wouldn't mind trying it ... I used to play it off of a floppy
  disc
that had a bunch of other games on it. I think there were a couple of
typing games and some others, but I can't remember which ones at the

 Hi Folks,

A couple of weeks ago there were two major events concerning game
accessibility. The first was at this years ICCHP convention in Linz
(Austria), where several (academic) projects, including AGRIP Audio
 Quake
and Universally Accessible Space Invaders, were presented in a 2 hour
session. Matthew Atkinson of AGRIP gave a presentation about his
 theories
and findings in the AudioQuake project. Guidelines for game
 accessibility
were also presented here. These are one of the first sets of
 guidelines
currently under development (in this case these resemble the style and
format of W3C's WAI-CAG guidelines for web accessibility). I personally
think there's a lot wrong with the proposed guidelines so I look
 forward
to the other ones currently under development. I suggest you all have a
look for yourselves here: http://gameaccess.medialt.no/guide.php and
 see
how people are out there trying to define how the industry should make
more accessible games. I'm interested in what you, the tar
get group for these guidelines, think about them...

The other major event was Develop Brighton in (where else) Brighton
(England), where the IGDA Game Accessibility Special Group held a
 full-day
tutorial with presentations and hands-on gaming events. Among the
participants were Michelle Hinn (IGDA), Thomas Westin and Goran Lange
(PinInteractive), Dimitris Grammenos and Giannis Georgalis (Universally
Accessible Space Invaders), Barrie Ellis (OneSwitch.org.uk), yours
 truly
(AudioGames.net / Accessibility.nl) and Eelke Folmer (Ass. Professor
 and
more . Michelle talked about the field of game accessibility, I held a
general presentation on audio games and blind accessible game design,
Thomas Westin showed some nifty things with games controlled with your
mental abilities (using brainwaves), Goran talked about the future of
accessible educational games, and Dimitris and Giannis shared their
experiences and possible future steps in the Universally Accessible
 Games
project. And to end with a bang, Eelke showed some new insights to ac
cessible game design (also in relation with usability design) and
  also
possible guidelines (although in a usability format this time).

In the audience was none other than game veteran Ernest Adams himself.
Ernest is about to publish his new book (http://tinyurl.com/h9b26)
 which
will feature an appendix on (more) accessible game design.

One newsitem I am very proud to announce is that of the GDC
 Accessibility
Idols. The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is the biggest game design
related conference in the world (and no, the E3 is a consumer expo
 where
all new and future games are on display - the E3 is where publishers go
 to
sell their games (and designers go to get drunk, and the GDC is where
designers go to get serious about their design (and eventually get
 drunk
 as well).
The IGDA GA-SIG (www.igda.org/accessibility) has managed to set up an
amazing event for next years GDC and it is called Accessibility
 Idols.
For this event, very famous game designers are asked to design an
accessible game. The games will then be presented before a huge crowd
 and
judged by an expert panel. Although I can''t really name any names yet,
rumour has it that none other than Ernest Adams (see above) and Keita
Takahashi (the creator of Katamari Damacy) might be amongst the
 designers
to take on the challenge. Also see this month's issue of E-Access

 Hi, Mark.
First, you need a mud client, a program used to connect with and play
mud and mush games. Two of them I can think of is gmud and Monkey Term.
After that just google for muds. There is all kinds of them over the
net. Star Trek, Star Wars, triditional DND, general sci-fi, etc...
Once you find one you want give it a address, and port number to connect
to and you are in business.

[Audyssey] Anacreon battle solutions

2006-08-01 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Ok, someone was asking how to conduct battles in Anacreon 2.1. Here
is what I've learned through trial and error, plus a close reading of
the manual, particularly the section dealing with the Ministry of War
menu item.

1. Choose attack from the Ministry of War Menu.

2. You will be confronted with the group configuration screen. The
grid is a triangle with one group on the right, centered on three
groups in the next column, centered by 5 groups in the left-most
column. You begin on the group at the right point of the
triangle. Use your arrow keys to move from group to group, with Say
All (or the WE or HAL equivalent) on. While on a group, you may hit
the S key for split or the J key to join it up with other groups of
the same kind of ship.

3. After you have your groups configured the way you want, hit
enter. Now you are on the battle screen. Again, your groups are set
up in the triangle and you highlight them with the arrow keys. Hit
the letter T to cycle through the available targets at a given
orbital level. You will have to use your Jaws or other exploring
cursor to find out what the opposition is, and to click the engage
or retreat buttons. (JFW doesn't report them as standard buttons,
but you left-click on them anyway. You may also hit the letter A to
tell a highlighted group to advance, or R to tell it to retreat or S
to tell it to stand by. Remember that you must move your transports
or jump transports with infantry forward to land the infantry on the
surface of the planet. Having done this, the transport group
disappears and becomes infantry.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Christopher Bartlett

[Audyssey] two top speed questions

2006-08-01 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've got some topspeed2 questions. First of all, i was wondering if a
game expert can talk me via aim and tell me how to drive? My problem are the
hairpin and hard right turns, so far i'm only using the basic tracks though
i just downloaded the new cars and tracks from Djc's site, and with those
types of turns i crash every time. Honestly i embarass myself at my terible
driving.
My other question has to do with track layout, especially the new ones, is
there like a description of each track, for example long straight away, left
turn, hard right, etc. so i can kind of get an idea of what the track looks
like before i start the racing?
Lastly a question on cars, is there a doc on the advantages,
disadvantages, and performances of each vehicle? For example is one car
faster than another, or does one car not have good handling etc?
Once i get a little better at driving i'd like to race someone, or two
or more.
Thanks.
Dave.

 Hi, Janet.
That is correct. usually you can only equip one weapon at a time unless
you use a weapon and shield combo.
As for the knight statues they are ranked easiest to hardest Fox, Wolf,
Stag, Serpant, Bear, Dragon, and Griffen.

 Janet Session wrote:
 HiMissWings,

sure you have a free hand. IF YOU Have a shield, you can only equip a

Question, did they make the statues easier, Statues from easiest to
hardest, KNIGHTS of the: fox wolf, stag, serpent, bear, dragon, griffin,
 ...
 Think that's how it went.
It took me 2 days to finally finish them.
Will be glad to hear from you.
 Happy gaming.

Hi.
Although, not all the items won in combat are useful. The shield of the
dragon is not bad, the belt of the bear is helpful, the ring is ok, but
the helm of the stag for example I found wasn't all that useful as
armour. I could buy better helms in Talanis.
The blade of the fox is a good sword, but nothing compared to the Hale
Blade.
That said all the armour etc is a good start until the player can either
buy better or find better.

Agreed. Gralgarak's shield is better than the Shield of the Dragon, and the
plate armor purchased in Talinus outstrips much of the Knight armor by a
considerable amount if what you're looking for is a stamina boost. I will
say the Cape of the Gryphon is well worth keeping since it boosts both
stamina and melee rating. Adventurers' Guild members also have one other
really good way of acquiring excellent items, which is Tallys' Trading Post
outside Trithik. Granted he only accepts Adventurer Tokens and they're a bit
difficult to come by at the moment, but opportunities to acquire them are
fairly frequent. In fact there's one in Hawklor after you complete Westwold.
Just go to the tavern and on your way you'll meet a guy who offers you a
reward in exchange for your services... There's also the Proving Grounds, a
contest that occurs on a semi-regular basis. The higher you rank the greater
your reward. Keaira, my main character, ranked second place last time. She'd
have placed first if I hadn't made a minor miscalculation during a fight and
gotten myself killed.

[Audyssey] Moderator warning off topic posts.

2006-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi, listers.
Just a friendly warning to remember to not send off topic posts to the
list. If you absolutely feel it should be sent here always ask one of
the moderators, Raul or myself, for permission before posting an off
topic post.
Second, if a post is off topic all replies should be sent to the person
directly and not to the list unless you specifically hear otherwise from
Kevin, Raul, or myself.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or wish to ask about a specific
topics off topic status send mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
and one of us will get back to you.
Since Raul is going away for his wedding you can send questions to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
until Raul returns to active duty on list.
This is the lists final warning about off topic postings. Future posts
will result in immediate moderation of the person or persons involved.
Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Muds was StarWars browsergame?

2006-08-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Mark.
Well, I will try and explain ports without going in to a major
discussion of computer networking. Here is the short version of it.
Every program that works on a computer network, say the internet,
broadcasts on and connects via what is called a port. For example, when
you fire up your web browser and go to
www.somewhere.com
your web browser connects with the servers port 80 which handles http
stuff via a web hosting software like apache or IIS.
When you use your email say sending email it connects to your mail
server on a different port, port 25 SMTP, which is where sendmail,
postfix, exem, and other mail transport server software lives.
Well, other programs residing on your computer may connect on a
different port. For example, mud clients run on port numbers usually
above 5000.
Simplest answer, is it is kind of like a private phone extention for a
program service trying to be reached.
Look at it this way. You can dial
somewhere.com
port 22: admin secure shell.
port 25: sending mail.
port 26: logged in via telnet.
port 80: viewing web page.
port 5000: playing game.
So depending on what port you are connected to will determine if you can
access ftp, ssh secure shell, sending mail, viewing web content, playing
a game, etc

have placed first if I hadn't made a minor miscalculation during a fight
 and
 gotten myself killed.

It ain't pretty when the pretty leaves you with no place to go.

[Audyssey] it's here, it's finally here!

2006-08-01 Thread Ken the Crazy
I haven't tried it out yet, but there is a freeware version of Space invaders.
You can get it at the same place you got Universally accessible chess. For
more details get the link from www.pcsgames.net/game_co.htm
He doesn't mention the space invaders game but does refer to the chess game.
Just follow that link and click games, then do a search for invaders and follow
the links. It works with windows and Linux.

[Audyssey] the game

2006-08-01 Thread Ken the Crazy
The space invaders game is more like a game engine than a game. You can create
profiles, and these profiles can determine ship speeds, sound and music played,
whether graphics are drawn or not and what they are, how many ships there are
and how many appear at once, and a ton of other stuff. The only thing I'd like
to see added is a cite beep letting you know when you're on target--but then
maybe some of the challenge is lost, eh?
