Re: [Audyssey] Games on the PSP
On TV or radio you can't hear any football sounds. Rather give me the sounds, I mean, if we don't have the sounds as feedback, we can't really play the game! Jack, it looks as you're interested in American football? You may be interested in reading an article I wrote a long time ago in one of the back issues of Audyssey on how I thought an accessible American football game could be made. (they were just thoughts, and I don't even know how possible they were, but I was actually a bit disappointed that a games developer didn't look into it, or maybe it's not possible or such a good idea). I like football instead, but I wish someone could think up a solution to get a very accessible version out their. I know we have Super Football, but that's more a type of board game, you can't run, their's no crowds, teams, leagues, etc. Since it's a more of a world thing, I think that suggesting it to Code Factory, RNIB, or one of those huge organisations would be good. I actually think that it's sad that large organisations for the blind aren't developing new board games, or, better still, they should look at the possibility of making electronic or accessible computer games. I'm not trying to take anything away from our community of developers, but since a place like RNIB receives funding, and since it's a brand in the blind world, it could ask huge game companies to jump on board and help. One thing I was wondering was, for example, a company like Microsoft, who actually have their own departments for accessibility. If a person could somehow persuade them to put speech in their Flight Simulators, really advanced speech giving really precise details, we could play it. Ari ___ Gamers mailing list .. [Audyssey] Game Accessibility and the visually impaired community (was: Games on the PSP)
Hi, *quote* I actually think that it's sad that large organisations for the blind aren't developing new board games, or, better still, they should look at the possibility of making electronic or accessible computer games. *quote end* In case you missed my emails about this, there is a very active community concerning the accessibility of computer games. This includes people from the Internation Game Developers Association, Microsoft, LucasArts and myself to name a few. Microsoft is actually quite aware of the accessibility issues in games and has already participated in one or two game accessibility projects. In my opinion, to get more accessible games, one needs to address the game industry instead of organisations such as the RNIB (which is not a professional game developer/publisher). For that, I believe *this* community needs to be out there more. In all honesty, I think that the blind community is not doing very much in this respect (being out there). Email companies *together*, as a community. Participate with the Game Accessibility Special Interest Group (GA-SIG http://www.igda.org/accessibility ). Visit game conferences like the GDC and address game companies and developers in person. Participate in project Game Accessibility (www.game-accessibility.com). Each time a new issue of Audyssey Magazine is out, why not email it to game companies, magazines, etc.? I've got an example: when Halflife 2 was released, many deaf/hearing impaired players had a lot of trouble playing the game. Did you know what the deaf community did? They got together online with several 100 people, and as one they started emailing Valve, clearly describing the problems they were having and also suggesting solutions. Valve listened and it took them *JUST* two weeks (!) to make Halflife 2 accessible for hearing impaired gamers. Ever since the engine of Halflife 2 has been accessible, resulting in other games being accessible (like the Halflife and Sin episodes) as well. I know it might not be as simple to make the game accessible for the blind, but unless you stand up and make yourself heard, you will never know. That's why I am so enthousiastic about the What Blind Gamers Want The Industry To Know-document that we made for the GDC, because it turned out as an eye-opener for many professional game developers. I just want to end this rant (smile) with the news that Nintendo has just released 7 mini-audio games for Gameboy Advanced/Micro and Nintendo DS. See one of my prior postings to this list. If it turns out that these games are accessible for the blind or at least almost accessible, then I think Nintendo needs to know this. Because these are experimental games and if Nintendo doesn't get some good feedback on it, they might think the idea of audio games (or blind accessible games) suck and they won't continue along that path. Whereas if they do get a massive amount of positive feedback from the blind community concerning these audio games, then there might be a chance that Nintendo will think: hey, this might actually be something here If you want to support me and my colleagues who spent a lot of time pressing the issue game accessibility to the professional game industry, please do so on the Visually Disabled Gamers forum: http://www.game-accessibility.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=4 And if you have an idea or a suggestion or anything you want the industry to know, or if you'd want help to visit a convention of some sort, contact us through the forum. Re: [Audyssey] Game Accessibility and the visually impaired community(was: Games on the PSP)
One thing we do have to consider is the financial end of the spectrum. Those big name companies don't necessarily realize how little extra they'd really need to spend on making their games accessible or the relatively small amount of extra work that would need to be done. In their eyes it would cost too much just to please what they probably view as a minority. Now don't get the wrong idea about where I stand. I'm firmly of the opinion that, given the right insentive and the right kind of insight, mainstream developers might just be persuaded. One of the things companies like to see is statistics. The number of blind people who enjoy mainstream games would probably surprise these people if they knew of it, so if we were to do some research and come up with some general figures, then add to that some suggestions about how companies could improve their games, we might be able to marshall a convincing argument. I think Richard and the folks at AudioGames.net are on the right track. More of us just need to be involved is all. I myself may order this game that Nintendo's come up with if I can figure out where to do so. Then after experimenting with it I could definitely send an Email to Nintendo with my comments and suggestions. If enough people do this, and I'll be doing my part at the first opportunity, we'll win them over. And if one developer makes that step based on our feedback, it'll create ripples in the pond and we might actually make a difference. It ain't pretty when the pretty leaves you with no place to go. I'll post his Instructions below. Do the steps in the exact order as shown in the instructions and the game will come up working. 1. Install Python 2.4 (http://www.python.org) 2. Install pygame (http://www.pygame.org) 3. Install pySonic (http://pysonic.sourceforge.net)--Linux users should refer to Linux_pySonicInstall.txt 4. Windows users install the FMod.dll in the C:\Windows\System32 directory (you may copy and paste it there). 5. Run main.py Note: Be sure that you install Pysonic0.82.4.exe because if you install pysonic0.8.2.3.exe it won't run with Python2.4. Now I'm off to learn how to play this game but I can already tell you it's got great sound effects. djc's Jukebox: http://paulmerrell.net:9212 Saturday Evenings 9 to midnight Eastern. [Audyssey] Review Of The Free Audio Games
I've been checking out the new free downloadable games on the Audiogames site and here's what I've found out. Moosic_1.0 This game is modeled after Super Mario Brothers. When the game starts up there is an intro and you can bypass the intro with the space bar. Once in the game your task is to jump over the enemies. There are a couple of ways to accomplish this. You can right arrow till you have the enemy almost dead center and then you jump with either the letter w or the up arrow key. You need to be real quick. Since I've never played the original Mario Brothers I'm not familiar with that game but this is basically how you play this game. This game is written in Python. Instructions are available at http://audiogames.net for getting what you need to run Python. Sonar This is an interesting game where the object is to kill the enemy when he gets close to you. You use the left mouse button to fire a gun and the right mouse button to reload the bullets in the gun. It is not neccessary to move the mouse as the enemy will find you. This game starts at level 1. I have not been able to complete level 1 so can't comment on how many levels this game might have. If you move the mouse out of the Sonar window the game still works. This is excellent for blind people since mice can be hard for us to control. FindTheSound This game uses The Flaxh player. You move your mouse till you hear the loudest sound in the center of your headphone and you left click. You only have so much thme to complete a sound and once completed the game goes on to another sound. Great sounds in this one and fun to play. This game is multi level. Flsound This game is called Amazing voice and your supposed to find another person who is playing the game with you using your microphone. Unfortunately I can't get it working because they want you to connect to a server but no server appears to be in the options and they didn't supply a server so I'm not sure but the concept sounds pretty cool. Jumpman In this game cars come at you and you use your space bar to jump over the cars. This one is really simple. It uses Flaxh. Sightless In this game your a person looking for a murderer. Your girl friend or wife has been murdered. Your totally blind and you have to kill or at least beat the other enemy. Basically you'll be fighting or boxing the enemy and you have to listen when you hear him swing and left click your mouse button. This game is not all that easy so it should be fun to try and beat the monsters. Spong This is sposed to be sound pong but It complains when I run it And it says that a .dll is missing from the package. I can't run this one. That's my review of these games. All of them just run from the .exe files and don't need to be installed. Just unzip each game to a folder and run the game. djc's Jukebox: http://paulmerrell.net:9212 Saturday Evenings 9 to midnight Eastern. Re: [Audyssey] stoneback tomb
The cubes are not what is going to get you to where you need. The key was in the same chest that you found the mask. after killing the woman in there, you would have found a wand. you use that wand. after you get the mask out of the chest, look in there againand you will notice something different. that is where the key is. and if you need ot get to the boss, I can direct you there as well. smiles Kellie and my loveable Lady J. [Audyssey] USA Games News.
USA Games News 8/6/2006 What's Ahead for USA Games Hello everyone, Allot has been going on this summer with the USA Games list being up and down, upgrades to Montezuma's Revenge, getting ready for fall development, and more. In this news release I hope to announce our plans for the rest of 2006, and where we are going with all our pending projects. Mailing List In July USA Games moved it's mailing list from smartgroups.com to shaned.net. Over all, the switch from Smartgroups to Shaned.net went well for a while. However, in late July Shaned.net moved USA Games to a new server/service and the list was up and down for several days as we debugged the problem. Thankfully, it seams the server is now running well, and the USA Games list should be fully up and running now. To sign up for USA Games mailing discussion list go to http://www.usagames.us go to the mailing list link in the side frame, and then click on the subscribe link in the right frame. Dotnet Framework 2.0 Attention all Montezuma's Revenge and Final Conflict players. We at USA Games have received numerous problems with those of you already running Microsoft's Dotnet 2.0 framework which is the latest version of the framework. As a result we will be migrating all of our games from the older 1.1 framework to Dotnet Framework 2 in the next few weeks. When USA Games began writing games Dotnet Framework 2.0 was just beginning development. So we at USA Games decided to use the stable 1.1 framework as most developers did at that time. However, now that Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005 is out and Dotnet Framework 2.0 is becoming the Dotnet platform of choice we feel it is in everyones best interests to upgrade all our projects to VS 2005, and Dotnet Framework 2.0. In addition we are dropping support for Microsoft's Setup Installer, (MSI,) and have decided to switch to Inno Setup 5. Many reasons went in to this decision, but the main one is flexibility of the installer, cost to use and deploy, and it comes well recommended by developers. Montezuma's Revenge Alpha 2 As most of you know I am working on Montezuma's Revenge Alpha 2. Major high lites of Alpha 2 are support for the DotnetFramework 2.0, updated support for DirectX 9, a patch for jumping through doors, and temple 2. It's hard to say exactly when Alpha 2 will hit the servers, but hopefully it won't be to long. Final Conflict Beta 2 At long last Final conflict is do for a major upgrade. In Beta 2 gamers will be able to save and restore saved games, support for Dotnet Framework 2.0, updated support for DirectX 9, and other miner updates. USA Games Web Site In addition to all our other news USA Games will be completely rewriting our web site from the ground up. We will be removing all the frames and will instead do allot more php scripting for items such as a navigation bar, page counters, technical support forms, and allot more new features. We are Aiming for an entirely new look and feel. So stay tuned. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Sound Pong
I found that openal dll file and it didn't seem to help. I still get an error whenever I try and run soundpong. I put it in my system32 folder and in the soundpong bin folder but nothing has changed. Any suggestions, folks? The zip file on the site is missing openal32.dll so go grab a copy of that file easily found on the net and put it in the bin folder of sound pong and run spong.exe and the game will come up running. To play Sound Pong press the space bar to start and then use the left and right arrows to keep the ball in play.
