Re: [Audyssey] Games

2007-05-28 Thread Dark
What sort of games would you like to play?

As Charlse said, the big list at Pcs games http://www.pcsgames.net/
is a pretty complete list of all audio, self-voiccing games (and some others
as well). Thom Lorimer's Whitestick.co.uk site:

http://www.whitestick.co.uk/ also has lists of screen reader accessible
games which can be played online, and a page about online fantasy adventure
game books which are screen reader friendly as well.

then, if you'd like to try interactive fiction games, - games where you
progress through a story by typing commands such as "go north" or "take
brass lantern" then I'd recommend having a look at this guide to interactive
fiction site:

http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/IFGuide.pl?step=6&c=0

appologies for bombarding you with links, but I wasn't certain from your
post what types of games you meant or what you might be interested in.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

You're sure "`" does not take you to the console? It is sometimes hard to

Hi,
Have you tried from the demo hiting the grauve accent? The one right
beside the numbers row 1 and typing "disconnect"?
The manual, last I saw of it, didn't actually explain this very well,
but that's what you need to do. Then you can type such things as Name and map agtut01 and so on. The name command is for internet games.
If you need any more help, you can feel free to contact me if you wish.

Re: [Audyssey] Interactive Fiction games

2007-05-28 Thread Niall
Hi
It's good to see you on the list. Personally I like interactive fiction
games with a lot of choice as to what you can do and different ways of
solving puzzles etc. The best way I think of doing this is making a quite
complex rpg where you can choose to do things like be good or evil
honourable or unforgiving and so on which can really add to a game. I also
think that story is extremely important second to gameplay. If you have to
make a few spelling or gramatical errors to get that done then that's fine
with me. I know that sounds demanding, but it would be better for an if
writer to spend a few years on a really good if game then to spend only a
few months and make not such a great game. A famous game writer once said
that a delayed game is eventually a good game, but a bad game is bad
forever.

Re: [Audyssey] Interactive Fiction games

2007-05-28 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello David. My name is Raul Gallegos and I'm one of the co-moderators of
the Audyssey gaming list. I'm glad you joined us and please do accept my
apology for not approving your message right away. It's been hectic these
last few days and I'm just now getting around to reading email since
Thursday or Friday. Now on to your question.

I like Text adventure games, or Interactive Fiction as they are now better
known as. My favorite current interpraters are the Adrift and the TADS
games. I still play many of the Zcode games, but it seems the more
interesting ones are from Adrift and TADS.

I've also gotten into learning Adrift myself and am in the process of
writing around 3 different games. One is an adult interactive fiction, the
second one is of a more general adventure, and the third one is where the
player is a blind character.

As far as replayability goes, I tend to have puzzles which are part of my
games, but not necessary to complete the game. For example, this gives the
player a reason to keep playing. He or she may finish the game but not get
all total points or all objects or rewards. To make them accessable is not
too difficult as long as, like you already mentioned, the graphics are
either kept at a minimum, or there is an alternative way of enjoying what
the graphics provide. In other words, if the graphic shows a picture
containing some code which the player would need to see to get past a
certain puzzle, then it's useless to a blind person. But if the graphic is
there for entertainment and there is perhaps another way of getting the clue
you need to get past the puzzle, then why not have the graphic?

Hope this helps.

[Audyssey] AudioQuake question

2007-05-28 Thread Susanne Pedersen
Hi,
I just installed AudioQuake and Quake on my new computer. When I launch the
game, it starts playing a demo, which I haven't seen it do before. I can
only switch between the main menu and these demos. I can't access the
console. Does anyone know how to get to the real game?

Thanks in advance,
Susanne Pedersen

[Audyssey] Interactive Fiction games

2007-05-28 Thread David Fisher
Hi! Just introducing myself ...

My name is David Fisher, and I usually hang around the rec.arts.int-fiction
newsgroup, which is to do with creating Interactive Fiction games. I'm not
actually blind, but I would like to find out if you guys had any suggestions
about writing games. The most obvious thing I can think of is not to include
ASCII graphics, like maps and things like that. Any others?

I was also wondering what your favourite type of Interactive Fiction was. I
had a look at the first issue of Audyssey, and Michael Feir mentioned a
preference for games that can be replayed ... this can be a bit hard with
Interactive Fiction, since once you know how to solve a puzzle, the
challenge disappears. The plot is also the same every time, unless the game
generates a different story every time you play - which would be very cool,
but a huge amount of work to write.

It may be a while before I get a game written, but I just thought I'd ask
for your point of view on these things.

Re: [Audyssey] Baseball

2007-05-28 Thread Dark
well yes, it is a rather, but who says Tortology is a bad thing?

but also, it's always amused me that in ancient Griece the words had
opposite meanings. If I remember properly, "politician" means "man of the
city" ie, someone who took part in governing the city and speaking in the
public forum which made decisions for the city as a hole, like whether
to go to war or not.

"Idiot" I believe meant someone concerned with their own affairs who didn't
take any part in the city government.

So, in ancient griece it was impossible to be both a politician and idiot at
the same time, - obviously a lot has changed sinse then smile!

Beware the Grue!

[Audyssey] Feedback on scrabble needed

2007-05-28 Thread Ken the Crazy
As most of you know, there is a Scrabble game that works on the PM and I've
created scripts for it. I'm about to modify those scripts, but I need feedback
on what I can do to make them better. The mods will include
1. Tile Selection. When you press 1 thru 7 the Jaws cursor will be activated.
2. Play mode. When you press p chord or insert p, the PC cursor will be
activated.
Ideas I have for mods
3. Selection notification: computer will beep when tile is selected but not
when deselected. (don't know how to go about doing that one but I'm gonna
work on it.)
4. Find a Letter to build on
The last two ideas may not be feasible.
Well, that's all for now--gonna go play more Crazy Bubbles--that game's
addictive!

You might want to have a look at
http://wormhole.se/index.php/Visually_Impaired , that should give you
some tips on how to get started.

The login should work as following:

Server sends: By what name do you wish to be known:
You type: A name you want to use and press enter.

Server sends: Did i get that right, the name you wrote? (Y/N)
You type: y and press enter

This only happens when you create a new character, if you already have
a character you will get a password question. Now the process of
creating your character starts. You will be presented with a number of
questions. I won't go through them all here buy let me know if you
need more help. Then we can do this off-list or if there are more
recipients that would want to have it explained will can do it
on-list.

Re: [Audyssey] Hello

2007-05-28 Thread Dark
Hi Jim, I like it.

As I don't know anything about the actual baseball teams and players, I've
been making random team match ups, and to have themed players would be cool

for example, the current set of games I'm playing is the idiots vs the
politicians. Obviously it'd be cool if people Like Tony blaire, Gordon
Brown, George bush and colin powel could bat or pitch for the politicians.

On a similar note, I wonder if you've ever considdered expanding the
monopoly board creator to give you even more customization in the game.

You could for example add the ability to customize the currency with the
board. there are many boards like Middle earth, starwars, - or even
london, where using dollars might not be appropriate (I'm personally used to
playing monopoly with pounds for example).

You might also considder adding the ability to eddit the tocan types, -
so that you could go round the board with characters appropriate to that
setting (like Frodo and Co on the middle earth board, or the Simpsons family
on the Simpsons board).

finally, you might considder adding the ability to eddit the text on the
chance and community chest cards. so for example, on the middle earth board,
instead of "Supertax lose 200 dollars" it could read "Smaug plunders some of
your gold to add to his hoard, lose 200 gold" though I wonder if this last
change might be more difficult programming wise, sinse presumably in the
program the text of the cards, incometax, win 2nd prize in a beauty
contest etc, isn't clearly separate from it's effect, lose 200 dollars etc.

Stil, there's my suggestions, let me know what you think.

You Encounter a lirking Grue, and lose 1 life!

Re: [Audyssey] About the audiogames market was: Piracyof accessiblesoftware

2007-05-28 Thread Davy Kager
Well, you're not totally right, but indeed that's almost the story of Top
Speed. However, I'm definitely not the developer of that game. I've been
working on a high-performance game engine for a while now, but since my
programming environment is not the best one on earth I decided to switch
over to Visual Studio 2005, which I'm currently setting up. If I succeed
I'll concentrate on some major issues that I encountered again and hopefully
do a "press release" later this spring or the early summer.

My god, that is huge! I've calculated a price of $20 US for my upcoming
game
(which is still some sort of a secret) and I thought about 50 games if I

were lucky... That way I could easily bring up the money for my domain
name
and extra bandwidth. The thing is that I do all the developing because
it's
something I'm interested in, not because I'd like to have more money.
But
with your message in mind, I'll definitely not release it for free. And
as a
little disclaimer: yes, I know that I'm not such a famous developer and
thus
my sales won't be amazingly hihg, but whatever, it's still way more than
I
need to break even.

Thanks for sharing this quite confidential information!

Re: [Audyssey] AJAX MUD client

2007-05-28 Thread Liam Erven
I think in theory it's really cool. however... The main problem I had is
that to read any text one has to actually manually use the mouse pointer in
their screen reader. the client I use now directly links to jaws and window
eyes. I think it's a cool concept, and might be useful for those who want
to play with out installing a client, but I think it might be a pain for
blind folks. It does read, and I didn't have any graphical problems
otherwise.

I'll see if I can modify the statusbar at the top of the "telnet"
window, I imagine that could confuse a screenreader.

There is a status window popping up when Mudix is starting I'll have
to check the sourcecode of mudix and see if I can make it dissapear.

This MUD client is dedicated to Wormhole MUD and autoconnects when you
access the webserver. However there was a problem with the MUD so that
might have been a bit confusing. It's back up again.

Hello everyone it's Jason again.
I was wondering about if an accessible game of soccer could be created.
It would be great to here crowd noise players kicking the ball and having
names of teams just like the world cup and I hope the U.SA wins the cup this
year but good luck to all the soccer teams out there. I was also hoping
when you score a goal the announcer shouts goal in excitement and the crowd
goes crazy and you here the victory song for each team.
