Re: [Audyssey] usa games forums vs lists new information

2011-12-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Good point, and thanks for getting the Audiogames.net community
involved. What I think is going to happen is that we'll keep the USA
Games lists as is, but I'll join the Audiogames.net forum that way
people can contact me through a mailing list like Audyssey if they
prefer, or if their a forum kind of person can catch me on the
Audiogames.net forum. Since I already due most of my business on
Audyssey anyway rather than setup my own independant forums I can
simply use what is there by using Audiogames.net which has a large and
active community of its own. All I have to do is add a link to the
forum from USA Games and we have our support forum. Any thoughts on
this compromise?

Cheers!

Hi Phil,

I take your point, but I think you are a little behind the times.
Sadly Hershey Pennsylvania isn't the chocolate capital of the world
any more, and a lot of Hershey's chocolates are now produced over
seas due to cheaper labor costs and the usual out sourcing we are
seeing in every kind of industry. I guess you missed the big news
story a couple of years back when Hershey laid off something like
5,000 employees because the company wanted to move over seas to higher
foreign labor. However, that's a discussion for another time. :D

The reason forums have been slowly replacing mailing lists is as I
said. Companies like Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Nintendo, or any
other good sized business has thousands of people signed up to their
forums each day. its easier to manage thousands of customers on a
forum than it is to deal with a mailing list where there is at least a
thousand messages coming into your e-mail inbox each day. That's just
too much traffic for e-mail to handle so forums have been growing in
popularity and are becoming a standard business model for
communicating with your customers. I guess where I am coming from is I
want to get more serious with USA Games and am looking to redesign the
site and adopt a more professional business model for my games and
services.

I've realized when it comes to games like MOTA I've really failed the
community and customers at large because I'm not working on a fixed
schedule. I've been developing the game on a when and if I have the
time type schedule. Obviously it isn't working because it is taking
years to complete a project that should have taken me a year tops. So
if I adopt a more pro business model I'm going to have to setup
regular hours even if it is just two hours a day until games like MOTA
and Raceway are done.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Top 25 websites for gamers who are blind

2011-12-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Right. I don't think it is anything personal. A lot has to do with the
criteria they use to determine the top 25 sites.

For example, USA Games is on the top 25 list and Blind Adrenaline
isn't. I can certainly see why Che would be annoyed by that since he
has done a lot more work, created several more games than USA Games,
and his projects are fairly revolutionary. However, from what I gather
from last years criteria the reason I managed to land a spot on the
top 25 list is primarily due to the fact I started archiving and
hosting free and abandoned games. That has nothing to do with
favoritism or USA Games being better than BA, but it simply came down
to the fact my site is a great place to begin building a collection of
free audio games for those who can't afford or are unwilling to buy
commercial games. I'm adding more to the free games page as we speak,
and I can certainly see how my site might be a nice showcase of the
kind of work that has been done over the last ten years or so.

Cheers!

this matter I'd say your being a trifle hasty, or at least putting your
 point a litle too negatively.

While I do agree, I'm content to reserve judgement until we find out what
the top 25 happens to be this year, and also whether the criteria changes.

As to how the top twenty five works in the scheme of things. Well you are
right in that no it probably won't change the universe, however I will say
that 7-128 actually do a lot in terms of game accessibility generally, and
have links to various games and general access related organizations, from
able gamers to retroremakes, indeed I first heard of 7-128 myself when they
appeared in a magazine artical detailing their life style as well as their
 game access work.

this means it's more likely to be seen by newcomers to audio games, and get
 the exposure we all need.

so while I do agree perhaps the criteria were too narrow if it excluded
specifically designed accessible clients for online gameplay, (especially
sinse it counts games like sound rts and topspeed whos' single player mode
is hardly astounding), I think we should wait for a response, or indeed for
 the list itself.

Also on a final note, the list is not personal.

just as I myself don't object to the fact that audiogames.net is always
behind pcs games, I don't think the exclusion of any site is intended as a
reflection of anyone's work, it just depends upon what criteria they use to
 evaluate the sites in question.

Indeed I believe several factors such as google rank are things that few
 people can do anything about.

Actually you won't be the only developer doing this, Aprone works entirely

Everyone,

The year-end celebration has started at Alter Aeon!

We're starting things off with a bang today by re-opening the
troll
caverns in the dark forest on Archais. This update to the
original
area adds two more levels of caves, a number of new monsters,
fame,
equipment, and a new quest. The caves are suitable for players in
the

level 25-30 range.

Other events that are planned:

- On the 25th, chrismas day, we will be opening Scribe's new
stone
giant area west of Finspang on the mainland. This is a high
level
area and it puts a very different spin on stone giants than you
might

be expecting.

- On the 28th, we'll be opening a brand new area north of the Old
Indira Forest on the island of Kordan. This level 10-14 area is
intended to give low level players on Kordan a safe place to
explore,

and possibly defeat the mole king while they're at it.

- An object creation contest, open to everyone (this is currently
running and submissions will close on Dec 23rd)

- Several different minor contests and activities similar to the
famous Halloween Pumpkin Cannon, schedule TBA.

We'll also be running sales on various credit purchases in game
if

you're into that sort of thing.

Finally, all players who log in from now until the end of the
year
will get a daily thank you gift from the admin, including
experience,
practices, and sometimes credits. Thanks to everyone for
playing!

area adds two more levels of caves, a number of new monsters,
fame,
equipment, and a new quest. The caves are suitable for players
in the

level 25-30 range.

Other events that are planned:

- On the 25th, chrismas day, we will be opening Scribe's new
stone
giant area west of Finspang on the mainland. This is a high
level
area and it puts a very different spin on stone giants than you
might

be expecting.

- On the 28th, we'll be opening a brand new area north of the
Old

Indira Forest on the island of Kordan. This level 10-14 area is
intended to give low level players on Kordan a safe place to
explore,

and possibly defeat the mole king while they're at it.

- An object creation contest, open to everyone (this is
currently

running and submissions will close on Dec 23rd)

- Several different minor contests and activities similar to the
famous Halloween Pumpkin Cannon, schedule TBA.

We'll also be running sales on various credit purchases in game
if

you're into that sort of thing.

Finally, all players who log in from now until the end of the
year
will get a daily thank you gift from the admin, including
experience,
practices, and sometimes credits. Thanks to everyone for
playing!

[Audyssey] Finding Good Web-Based Games

2011-12-21 Thread Loravara
Hi,

This discussion about the top 25 best games for the blind has me intrigued.
As a blind gamer, I'm interested in the best games for the blind, regardless
of who developed them or what their motivation was.

What this means for me is that I pay for my Blind Adrenaline membership, and
I have the RS Games client on my PC. I also played Entombed avidly when it
came out, and wish there were more games like that one being developed. On
the other hand, I have numerous games on my iPhone that just happen to be
accessible, either because the developer achieved it accidentally, or
because they agreed to help when the blind community reached out to them.
Examples include 7 Little Words, Moxie, Word Warp, King of Dragon Pass,
Frotz and so forth.

Whenever someone makes a list, top 25 games of the year, for instance, they
get to define their criteria for that list. I may or may not agree with
their approach, but I always like to see the results, since I might learn
about a new game that I'd never considered.

Web-based gaming is particularly intriguing to me. I would be interested in
the opinions of those who play such games as to which ones they find most
enjoyable. I would particularly like to find kingdom building games, or
fantasy games where I get to start a character from scratch and take them on
quests and adventures, acquiring magic and items and other things as I go.
I'd prefer games where the site is mostly or completely accessible, and
where I don't have to do a lot of JAWS gymnastics to play, although if the
game is particularly good, I'd be willing to sacrifice these criteria.

I look forward to your responses.

Thanks,

Nancy

Re: [Audyssey] usa games forums vs lists new information

2011-12-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. Plus the Audio Games forum already
has several existing subscribers so I might as well use what has been
given to me by just registering to that forum and linking to it from
our support section rather than reinventing the wheel so to speak. So
I think that's what I'll do.

Cheers!

 Hi Tom.

well we'll be glad to see you posting on the audiogames.net forums.

Actually you won't be the only developer doing this, Aprone works entirely
through the audiogames.net forums, and even those developers like Philip
bennifall who have their own forums tend to post threads there and get a lot
of comments, indeed I personally find it easier to discuss a game like
perilous hearts there than register on other forums for it.

 All the best,

 Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Finding Good Web-Based Games

2011-12-21 Thread dark

Hi.

there are a variety of web based gameslisted in the audiogames.net db, and
indeed on the games to play online page on www.whitestick.co.uk.

Myself, i'd recommend core exiles, fly around as a space captain doing
missions, combat, mining etc.

I'd aslo recommend warriors 2, which has a truly unique item system, kingdom
of loathing (though hard to take seriously, stil good), and Gothador, though
that one requires some gynastics.

i'd also recommend looking at some of the gamebook sites, such as fighting
fantasy, age of fable, chronicles of arborell and project.aon. These are
stories that you progress through by hitting web links, occasioaly rolling
dice rpg style, but deffinately fill the roll of epic quests.

For more details, check out their pages on audiogames.net.

hth.

Beware the grue!

Dark.
