As I said when it gets converted from source to an executable all the words in your source code regardless of its a variable name, function name, etc is converted into ones and zeros and point to addresses only rather than actual code. Not sure that I can explain it clearly, but executable files will always be smaller than the original source because the compiler only keeps what is necessary to pass the instructions to the CPU. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] looking for SC soundpacks for mushclient
Popping out of lurkdom for two seconds. I am looking for a decent mushclient soundpack useable on Star Conquest. For that matter, a modifyable Miriani one would do if I knew how to make the modifications. I think the SC hosts have said in the past that soundpack discussion was disallowed, so I can't even ask on the boards in game. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Rem Statements
Hi Jim, HI see what you mean. I wonder if perhaps when VB compiles your executable files if it does statically link some libraries resulting in the extra file size. I know if I statically link some lib files, compile them directly into the executable, naturally my exe file is larger because of the statically linked libraries. For instance, all of my games written in C++ statically link to a library named g3d.lib. The g3d.lib library is my Genesis Engine. Obviously, any games I write will be larger when compiled because the lib gets compiled directly into the executable as well as the source. I'm thinking VB probably has some default static libs it includes automatically that might account for the extra file size. I'm not sure, but that's my theory. :D Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] western game
Hi David. The game westward can be found at http://www.apolitical.info/webgame/westward this involves taking a train of wagons across america and is I believe similar at least in style and setting to the old origan traile game that's so often mentioned on list. Then there is the mississippi game from Mardy software. this is a turn based economic stratogy where you buy and sell goods around the old west and eventually try to become president. It's mostly text based but has lots of music and sounds as well. See http://audiogames.net/db.php?id=mississippi for more information. I must confess I found mississippi a little disappointing as a single player game though it struck me as possibly more fun multiplayer, however sinse you could only have a multiplayer game at the same computer rather than across the internet this is a bit of a drawback. Then there are several western interactive fiction games, seE http://www.wurb.com/if/genre/18 FOR A LIST. Finally of course, there are those audio games with a western theme in usually an arcade setting, such as Esp pinball classic and pinball party pack Wild west tables, and grizly gulch from Bavisoft (though good luck acquiring that one. As for the unlockable cards. the first 2 mentioned below are no secret. The goblin card can be found just about anywhere in the dungeon. After a battle, it will fall to the ground. Just pick it up. the crystal card, to unlock the fortune teller, is gotten after defeating the drake on the 7th floor. The next 2 cards are a secret. Re: [Audyssey] Rem Statements
Thomas and Jim, Most of the time, the executable size is dominated by the linked in libraries, which are usually a lot bigger than the source. However, the size of the executable is very dependent on the programming language used and can be either bigger or smaller than the source code depending on the language. The target machine is also a big factor in the executable size. For example, assembly language programs almost always compile down to smaller machine code; however, basic programs almost always compile down to much larger programs than the original source, even including comments. This is because assembly language is a very detailed, low level language, wheras in basic a single print statement can require hundreds or thousands of instructions to be compiled correctly. As a real world example, the Alter Aeon server code is written in c++, and the source code size is 9.5 megabytes. The final executable is 14.3 megabytes. This is a particularly good example, because the server uses very few libraries and is the executable size is almost completely server code instead of library code. This is on a 64 bit linux machine. Our previous host server was a 32 bit server, and on 32 bit machines the executable size would only be about ten megabytes instead of 14. In summary, It's really hard to make general assumptions about executable versus code size like 'compiled code is always smaller than the source'. The different languages and architectures allow for extremely wide variation. Just FYI.
