2012-09-21 Thread dark

Hi tom.

I've heard people mention eamon deluxe won't run correctly on vista, but
have run it on 32 bit windows 7 where there is a reasonable windows console
mode and I have no idea about windows 8. however sinse I've just got xp to
test I haven't managed to try either.

I suggest downloading the games and trying them out.

Hi Dark,

When you say it won't run on post XP are you specifically talking
about 64-bit versions of Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 or both
32-bit and 64-bit versions?

The reason i ask is I have a number of older MS Dos games and play
them all the time on Windows 7. Games like Piledriver, Mission to
Mars, Run for President, etc run just fine on the 32-bit version of
Windows 7. In fact, I've gotten them to run on the 32-bit release of
Windows 8 as well. Its only my 64-bit machine where the games refuse
to run. So some clarification here please.

There have been a few preliminary releases of stand alone adventures,

Re: [Audyssey] Where can I get the game Eamon?

2012-09-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

I'll do that. I might write the author and see if I can beta test
Aemon while I'm at it. I am curious what sort of Windows 7 and Windows
8 compatibility it does or doesn't have. I know for certain it won't
run on 64-bit editions simply because 64-bit Windows doesn't have
16-bit compatibility without running Microsoft Virtual PC or VMWare's
VMWare Player, but I don't see anything particularly wrong with 32-bit
versions.

In fact, I'm a bit surprised the amount of backwards compatibility
that remains in Windows 8. That is the 32-bit version I'm talking
about of course. So far I've gotten some Dos games like Piledriver to
run without issue provided I turn off User Account Control. I've got a
number of audio games running on it so I think as long as people run
the 32-bit version they'll be in good shape. Unfortunately, if someone
buys a new PC, which they are probably going to want to do anyway,
they will be screwed since all the new PCs that will be shipping
Windows 8 will be 64-bit only so I've heard.

We have Jim kitchens games
We have crazy tennis and the like from VIP game zone.
He plays quite a few interactive fiction games on his Braille notetaker,

I don't mind games where he can memorize paths, sequences and commands, but
they need to be elaborate, since after playing GTA, the other games don't
interest him.

Ruchi, this is a bit of a difficult question to answer because its not
a simple yes or no answer. There are mainstream PC games that various
blind gamers have managed to play, but many of them require
memorization, sometimes some sighted help, and some are simply not age
appropriate for your son. So if you are specifically looking for games
that your son can play with his sighted friends that is likely to be a
 fairly short list.'

For example, I'm a blind man in my mid 30's and I play Wii Sports and
Wii Sports Resort with my wife and son. Its doable, but its not 100%
accessible. I have difficulties accessing the game menus, can't see my
scores, but I can generally do well enough at the game play itself
 once I practiced at it.

As a rule of thumb the games most blind gamers play with sighted peers
are fighting games such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Marvel
Verses Capcom, etc. These games require quite a lot of practice,
memorization, and isn't something your son can pick up and be good at
in hour or a day. Plus given the amount of violence etc I don't know
if they are exactly age appropriate either.

All I really can say here is there are accessible games that are fine
for a 9 year old, but they are specially designed for a blind gamer.
Something like Jim Kitchen's Life, Monopoly, Yatzi, and other board
games are perfect for a blind child. If his friends are willing to
play via speech fine, but if they expect graphics I doubt they'll have
much fun with Jim Kitchen's games because they just display a blank
window on screen which is what most audio game developers do.

Before I go I'll point you to 7-128's website. On
 http://www.7128.com
they have some childrens games and if I'm not mistaken they have some
simple graphics. So might be worth looking into.

In the end you'll have to download and try certain games and find out
if it is something you and your son will be interested in. Checkout
 the database at
 http://www.audiogames.net
and checkout Phil's fantastic games and where to find them list at
http://www.pcsgames.net. That may help you with ideas.

 Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Games for kids

2012-09-21 Thread dark

Hi Ruchi.

While Tom is right in that most audio games do not have graphics and
are, well audio, several in fact do. usually the graphics in these
games are simplified, or low vision accessible, and there aren't many, but
here is a list.

The first that comes to mind is Terraformers. This has probably the most
ellaborate graphics of an audio game, and takes the form of a first person
puzzle adventure. You can find it at http://www.pininteractive.com/ It was
originally a commercial game, but is now freeware.

Then, all the board, card and other traditional games from spoonbill games
in australia, found at http://www.omninet.net.au/~irhumph/blindgamers.htm
have full visual displays of board and cards, and thus might be a bit more
playable with sighted friends than some of Jims which are purely audio..

Then, several games have minimalist graphics, that provide something of an
extra dimention to those with some working vision like myself, but aren't
intended as a full representation of the game. packman talks from
www.pcsgames.net and also Sarah from the same company. Both have black and
white place holder graphics. Packman talks is an audio adaptation of the
arcade3 game, but Sarah is something far more complicated, sinse it's a full
3D adventure game set in the world of harry potter in audio.

Www.gmagames.com also have several with similar graphics, but these would
likely not be appropriate for a nine year old, sinse they include a very
frightening horror themed shades of doom, and the complex stratogy game time
of conflict.

Then, there are several online games by gamevial interactive, found at
http://www.accessiblewebgames.com/ these use flash to represent game
graphics and have score boards. They are mostly of the arcade type, though
also have some collection and adventure games too. Also in this catagory is
sonic zume from
http://www.cs.unc.edu/Research/assist/et/2005/SoundsLikeFun.html which was
designed for kids and is an arcade style racing game, but may be a little
too simplistic for your son.

Aprone, aka Jeremy kaldobski has included place holder graphics in all! of
his games. http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/ These include a couple that
might not work for your son such as complex simulation games, but also the
stratogy tower defense game towers of war.

You might want to also try the online multiplayer game swamp, though I'd
recommend you play that first yourself, sinse the theme involves fighting
zombies in a post appocalyptic city in full 3D audio. While not I think as
horrifying as shades of doom, the sounds could be pretty scary, but I'd urge
you to take a look because if your son would! enjoy the game the abilities
to play cooperatively with others online, and indeed perhaps get his friends
involved are exceptional and quite unique in audio, (I'm also assuming if
he's playing gta, he's got a relatively high gore and violence
threathshold).

other than another stratogy game, Sound rts, That's pretty much all the
games I can think of that have some sort of graphics and thus might be a bit
more immediately appealing to sighted players. However, I have myself played
completely audio games with sighted friends, so you could considder that
idea as well.

if you go to www.audiogames.net you will find an annotated list of most
games available, each with hopefully informative descriptions and info as
well as links on where to get them.

The fantastic games list over at www.pcsgames.net also provides a huge list
of websites for where to find accessible games, and can serve as a great
starting point and overview.

hth.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Games for kids

hi Ruchi.

I'm not an if fan myself, sinse i find the puzzles deeply frustrating, but
perhaps your son could also considder playing some brouser based games?
These will let him play with people online, are text based, and will also
give him some experience and practice navigating the internet with his
screen reader (it was playing brouser games that taught me).

If you take a look at www.audiogames.net, and also the list of games to play
online over at www.whitestic.co.u, you can probably find something workable.

in particular, I'd recommend the super hero themed rpg twilight heroes, and
the more general light hearted fantasy rpg Legend of the green dragon, which
also has the advantage of very easy to navigate pages, and thus is a great
way to learn net navigation, (it was how I started).

If your son has a more high fatnasy interest, the game Sryth the age of
igtheon might also appeal.

Also, check out the list of gamebooks, sinse these are like! interactive
fiction, but played in a brouser, and if your son like fantasy would
certainly be worth playing.

As to specific if titles, dreamhold by andrew plotkin, also a good intro to
if, glowgrass, and a simple theft come to mind, though to be perfectly
honest I've rather lost interest in if myself due to too many obscure
puzzles and guess the verb situations.

Hi Ruchi,

Hmm mmI'm seeing the problem, and I'm afraid I don't really have a
solution for this kind of problem. If we have to find something on par
with Grand Theft Audo minus the drugs, violence, sex, etc I really
don't know of anything that comes close and is accessible. Its a case
of having expectations that are far too high for the average
accessible game, and Grand Theft Audo is definitely not age
appropriate for a 9 year old. Here in the U.S.A. the minimum age is 18
and is rated M for mature gamers. However, I can completely understand
why he would find other games less satisfying.

For one thing the way the Grand Theft Audo games are designed they
have a very open world format. That is the player can freely travel
between cities, don't have to do things in any particular order, and
there is a lot of content. Especially, if the player purchases and
downloads the various expansion packs etc. In other words, it is
nearly limitless game play, and most accessible games mainstream or
not generally do not have that amount of content.

To add to that since GTA III and GTA IV Rock Star Games has hired top
actors and actresses to do the voice overs and cutscenes. They have
extremely realistic graphics and audio. Its a shining example of what
a game company can do when a product is well funded, and has extremely
high standards to meet. In short, if you are looking for something
that elaborate and is accessible that is not really going to happen.

That said, if your son is looking for something accessible with a
large world to explore etc two games comes to mind. One is a browser
based game called Sryth. Its a sort of dungeons and dragons type game
, and might be of some interest. The other is a game called Core
Exiles. Core Exiles has a pretty open ended format and might be worth
a try. Both a are text based games played through a web browser so
they aren't anything like GTA, but they are huge and fairly elaborate
in terms of text based games.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] Grand Theft Audio.

Grand Theft Audio.

Your goal as the car stereo thief is to do as many quick snatches on as many
cars as you can. You're equip with giant bolt cutters to smash the car
windows and cut the dashboard out of the way then it's rip and run while the
car alarm attracts a few cats and nothing else.
You get extra points for players with Tupac Shakur or Puff Daddy CD's in
them.

The more expensive the car the more challenging the theft.
If you go for the easy pickings, you won't get many trophies, but if you try
for the Bentley, Lamborghini Aventador and Gallardo, Rolls Royce, or
Bugatti's you may get more than you bargained for. There could be a driver
toting heat or an angry bodyguard ready to ice you.

How did you remove the percent sign? If I hit either delete it types in a
period. If I hit an arrow key it types in a percent sign. So I stil have no

hit enter it asks if a certain name is OK I don't hear any symbols so assume
it will be OK. but I still can't play the game for getting the error at

Hi Phil,

Lol! Good one. However, don't forget the gansta wannabes packing heat
who will try to steel the radios from you so you'll need to off a few
gangstas as well as a few coppers before you get away clean. Oh, and a
good car chase or two wouldn't hurt either. :D

I want to roll with the ganstas, but they think I'm too white and nerdy.

Cheers!

Your goal as the car stereo thief is to do as many quick snatches on as
many

cars as you can. You're equip with giant bolt cutters to smash the car
windows and cut the dashboard out of the way then it's rip and run while
the

car alarm attracts a few cats and nothing else.
You get extra points for players with Tupac Shakur or Puff Daddy CD's in
 them.
The more expensive the car the more challenging the theft.
If you go for the easy pickings, you won't get many trophies, but if you
try

for the Bentley, Lamborghini Aventador and Gallardo, Rolls Royce, or
Bugatti's you may get more than you bargained for. There could be a driver
toting heat or an angry bodyguard ready to ice you.

For one thing the way the Grand Theft Audio games are designed they have a
very open world format. That is the player can freely steel
stereos from many different cars and travel between cities, don't have to
listen to the songs in any particular order, and
there is a lot of music to listen to. Especially, if the player purchases
and downloads the various expansion packs that contain MP3's from Abba to
Ziggy Marley. In other words, it is
 nearly limitless music play.
So pick up your tote bag and head down to that shopping mall and get
 started!

Re: [Audyssey] unseen expert course north room help needed

2012-09-21 Thread dark

Hi Joseph.

Ah, i remember that one very well. the key is to walk around the floor
before you press the switch. The metal grating will show you where the pit
is, so you can memorize your route. As I remember it's something like two
north two east, repeated several times, but check with the grille sinse
that's what it's for.

hth.

Beware the grue!

Dark.
