Hi Thomas,

The problem that I would have with you redistributing my games with the Inno

[Audyssey] Just tried an Iphone, my thoughts and questions

2012-10-10 Thread dark
Well, this morning I just got a free play with an Iphone 5 running voice over.

On a basic level I was impressed. Some of the gestures I found more difficult
than others, for instance the three finger swipes I didn't quite get the kknack
of, but others were quite natural and I suspect I'd get more used to it in
time. The functions of the phone seemed fairly doable too, indeed for kicks I
tried searching the ap store for king of dragon pass, managed to find it and
read the game details, (I didn't play it because obviously the chap who's
phone I was examining didn't necessarily want the game), though sinse it's
games and gamebooks I'm mostly interested in on the Iphone, I was pleased that
was doable.

the internet I found a little more problematic, I tried searching for
audiogames.net, and had a bit of trouble navigating google correctly.

I also got a play with seri which seems a usefull system, though I was
disappointed when i was testing it's speech recognition that though it did!
know the word dalek, it didn't recognize cyberman and read it as spiderman! :D.

I also asked about commands to flick voice over on and off, lock the phone for
making phone calls etc, and all of that seemed doable.

The only thing I didn't like the sound of is the fact that I can't just copy my
music and audio books onto the phone, sinse one reason I wanted one was to
serve as an effective music and audio player, but apparently apple objects to
this so it requires silly itunes, which i'm obviously going to have to
investigate. That is the one downer I found, indeed I might considder just
buying an mp3 player separately to do that job if Itunes isn't going to behave.

Voice over did look fun though, and I'd actually love to see some audio games
that make full use of screen position in this way, for instance I can imagine
playing a stratogy battle game could be far easier with a touch screen sinse
you could get physical positional information about the various units relative
locations and the map, similarly to reading soemthing in braille but with the
information being conveyed by audio.

I'm now of course going to have to check out A, Itunes, and B, pricing, sinse
an Iphone 5 would be very expensive in the region of about 500 quid
apparently, and I'll C, check whether my current phone contract supports the
Iphone and has enough internet to make things work, (thus far I've not used
net so haven't got a very net heavy mobile phone contract, though it is a cheap
one and comes with a lot of free minutes).

it does however look like a workable solution and a lot of fun, indeed sinse if
everything goes as planned next year I should be studdying voice in Bermingham
conservatoire, I would be doing a lot of commuting on trains, and it'd be
usefull to have something small and portable.

Previously I've used my laptop, but the battery here is pretty dead, and i
would! like to try a lot of the iphone games, and more especially gamebooks.

Beware the grue!

2012-10-10 Thread Scott Chesworth
Hi Dark,

Yep, £529 for the 16gb iPhone 5 on these here shores if you buy
without a contract... ouch.

Something that's worth keeping in mind is that iTunes 11 drops
sometime soon, later this month if my memory serves, and there's been
quite a big interface overhaul. The new UI seems less cluttered
visually, though of course it remains to be seen whether the
simplified workflow will also be an improvement for keyboard and
screen reader users. Just thought it was worth mentioning, as
depending on how fast you move to investigate the dreaded iTunes, you
might have to do it twice lol.

Hi scot.

that is good to know, thanks. At least I should get any itunes related
updates with supernova sinse I now have version 13, though supernova doesn't
tend to change too much based on it's scripts the way say jaws does.

The itunes thing is just a thought, but it's the one thing that slightly
puts me off running out and buying a phone, sinse I did! want it for
listening to the music and audio books I have on my pc.

As to the price, well though it's a lot well I don't mind paying that sort
of cash if I get several years use out of the thing, plus, the chap who's
phone I examined paid ^£30 for the handset and then was on a £40 a month
contract for two years, which worked out more expensive (my currentphone
contract is £10 a month).

My original laptop that I got in 2000 cost around £700 (yes, they were that
expensive back then!), but it served me extremely well for the next five
years, being used literally on a dayly basis, so I'm pretty happy that I got
my money's worth.

My second laptop that I got in 2005 cost around £350, but once again, it was
completely used until 2010. indeed, it's still in full working order accept
for the headphone socket (it's really irritating they can't be replaced).

So I don't mind paying for something as long as it's something I use a lot,
and it sounds like that with the Iphone, indeed my brother paid that for his
and has used it extremely frequently for the last three years.

[Audyssey] iPhone Audio Games Extant question (was: Just tried an Iphone, my thoughts and questions)

2012-10-10 Thread Richard (AudioGames.net)

Hi Dark, Audyssey

Thanks for your interesting review! Much appreciated. Sander and I are
thinking of developing an iPhone version of Extant for some time now.
Actually, we already got it running for a year on iPhone/iPad but since
Extant is not much more than a tech demo without real gameplay, we did
not yet persue this project. Our questions are these - for you, Dark,
but also the Audyssey community...

- would you be interested in an iPhone version of Extant (and then a
full version game, not just the tech demo)?
- would you be interested in audio games for (mobile) iOs (iPhone/iPod
Touch/iPad) devices?
- would you be interested in audio games for (mobile) Android (for
example Samsung Note, Galaxy) devices?
- how many of you play the adio games that are currently in Apple's
AppStore - and what do you think of these?

Thanks for your input. If there's enough interest we might want to make
Extant (or another audio game) one of our next projects! Oh, and if you

Re: [Audyssey] iPhone Audio Games Extant question (was: Just tried an Iphone, my thoughts and questions)

2012-10-10 Thread Scott Chesworth
Hi Richard,

One big yes please sir for anything audio game related that'd be
playable in iOS. I've played through pretty much every title from the
App Store that's been mentioned here and on AppleVis. There's been
some great sound design, but nothing particularly challenging yet, nor
much in the way of replayability. I guess this is because the majority
of developers thus far have been pushing their apps as being something
different for sighted players. Nothing wrong with that of course, I'm
glad people are hitting on the idea and I know a couple of sighted
people who loved Papa Sangre, but as someone who's already used to an
audio environment, the gameplay hasn't yet been challenging enough to
keep me interested.

Please keep us posted on any ideas you have...

I play games on the iPhone and I love the ones there. However I do wish there
were more especially ones which could be like clue or game books. I would be a
supporter of games if you created them.

thinking of developing an iPhone version of Extant for some time now.
Actually, we already got it running for a year on iPhone/iPad but since
Extant is not much more than a tech demo without real gameplay, we did not
yet persue this project. Our questions are these - for you, Dark, but also
 the Audyssey community...

 - would you be interested in an iPhone version of Extant (and then a full
version game, not just the tech demo)?
 - would you be interested in audio games for (mobile) iOs (iPhone/iPod
 Touch/iPad) devices?
 - would you be interested in audio games for (mobile) Android (for example
 Samsung Note, Galaxy) devices?
 - how many of you play the adio games that are currently in Apple's AppStore
 - and what do you think of these?

Thanks for your input. If there's enough interest we might want to make
Extant (or another audio game) one of our next projects! Oh, and if you
really want a full game version of Extant on PC or Mac, please let us know
too :-) And if you don't know what Extant is, check this out:

[Audyssey] Extant was: iPhone Audio Games Extant question (was: Just tried an Iphone, my thoughts and questions)

2012-10-10 Thread dark

Hi Richard.

As I said I was! primarily interested in the Iphone for audio games like
pappasanga and also gamebooks, so yes I'd be interested in games for that
platform.

I also have no plans to get an android or other portable device so wouldn't.

With extant though, I think I'd most like to see a fully completed game with
missions, different enemies and weapons and a good story even if just for
windows before I'd worry about cross platform stuff, - unless of course
you were thinking in terms of developing the Iphone version at the same
time you develope the full game.

As I believe I have said back when I first played the extant tech demo, I
really like the concept, the game, the sounds and the atmosphere, I'd just
like to see more of it. so if it was a choice of projects I'd go for
expanding the windows version first, though if on the other hand your
thinking about developing a full cross platform game from scratch fair
enough.

Re: [Audyssey] Just tried an Iphone, my thoughts and questions

2012-10-10 Thread Bryan Peterson
If you add the folder the books are in to the ITunes library ITunes will
prompt you to convert those files to the ITunes format. Don't worry though,
they'll still play just fine on your computer and not just in ITunes. Anyway
say yes to the convertion. THe next time you sync your device with ITunes
the books should be copied to it. Granted doing it manually this way can
sometimes cause weird problems where a book gets copied to the IPod but it's
listed as unknown. However if you have, say a book on CD, and ou rip it
directly into ITunes itself that will not happen. The only downside is that
you do have to rip each disc individually and then have to play it
individually as well. If there's a more convenient way to do this I don't
know. But I too would be interested in more accessible IOS games.

Hi,

I also have an Iphone and would certainly be interested in more games for
the platform, so I would say go for it. But I also would like to see a full
version for windows, since sometimes I just am more in the mood for playing
a game on my PC or the Iphone battery is just low. So I really would like to
see both versions.

Best regards

Iphone, my thoughts and questions)

Hi Dark, Audyssey

Thanks for your interesting review! Much appreciated. Sander and I are
thinking of developing an iPhone version of Extant for some time now.
Actually, we already got it running for a year on iPhone/iPad but since
Extant is not much more than a tech demo without real gameplay, we did not
yet persue this project.

Well, this morning I just got a free play with an Iphone 5 running voice

On a basic level I was impressed. Some of the gestures I found more
difficult than others, for instance the three finger swipes I didn't quite
get the kknack of, but others were quite natural and I suspect I'd get more
used to it in time. The functions of the phone seemed fairly doable too,
indeed for kicks I tried searching the ap store for king of dragon pass,
managed to find it and read the game details, (I didn't play it because
obviously the chap who's phone I was examining didn't necessarily want the
game), though sinse it's games and gamebooks I'm mostly interested in on the
Iphone, I was pleased that was doable.

the internet I found a little more problematic, I tried searching for
audiogames.net, and had a bit of trouble navigating google correctly.

I also got a play with seri which seems a usefull system, though I was
disappointed when i was testing it's speech recognition that though it did!
know the word dalek, it didn't recognize cyberman and read it as spiderman!
:D.

I also asked about commands to flick voice over on and off, lock the phone
for making phone calls etc, and all of that seemed doable.

The only thing I didn't like the sound of is the fact that I can't just
copy my music and audio books onto the phone, sinse one reason I wanted one
was to serve as an effective music and audio player, but apparently apple
objects to this so it requires silly itunes, which i'm obviously going to
have to investigate. That is the one downer I found, indeed I might
considder just buying an mp3 player separately to do that job if Itunes
isn't going to behave.

Voice over did look fun though, and I'd actually love to see some audio
games that make full use of screen position in this way, for instance I can
imagine playing a stratogy battle game could be far easier with a touch
screen sinse you could get physical positional information about the various
units relative locations and the map, similarly to reading soemthing in
braille but with the information being conveyed by audio.

I'm now of course going to have to check out A, Itunes, and B, pricing,
sinse an Iphone 5 would be very expensive in the region of about 500 quid
apparently, and I'll C, check whether my current phone contract supports the
Iphone and has enough internet to make things work, (thus far I've not used
net so haven't got a very net heavy mobile phone contract, though it is a
cheap one and comes with a lot of free minutes).

it does however look like a workable solution and a lot of fun, indeed
sinse if everything goes as planned next year I should be studdying voice
in Bermingham conservatoire, I would be doing a lot of commuting on trains,
and it'd be usefull to have something small and portable.

Previously I've used my laptop, but the battery here is pretty dead, and
i would! like to try a lot of the iphone games, and more especially
gamebooks.

 Beware the grue!

 Dark.

Yes.
You can hold your phone in your hand, clip it to a belt, put in your pocket,
or in your bra if you're a female. You just need to turn off the location
tracking and you'll be good to go. You won't be able to do zombie chases

However there are many inaccessable buttons mostly having to do with

Aparently on older non touch ipods you can copy directly to them

I've personally had very little trouble with ITnes. Then again I use
Window-Eyes, which is actually the screen reader Apple seems to recommend
for the Windows version of ITunes. But I'm able to sync my IPod Touch and
IPhone quite easily with ITunes since at least to a certain degree you do
actually have conrol over what you put on your device. I can tell ITunes to
put all Audiobooks on the IPod Touch but not on the IPhone itself. The only
problem is that if I have Apps in m ITunes library that I want on the IPhone
but not on the IPod Touch I have to actually delete them from ITunes before
the next time I sync the IPod. ther than that though I find ITunes to work
fairly reliably. Touch

Hi scot.

that is good to know, thanks.

Beware the grue!

Hi.
Zombies will still approach you during the clips in between songs.

The zombie chases occur when you're tracking is on. If you don't speed up
for at least a minute, the zombies might catch you and then you have to drop
some of your supplies to distract them.
The game is exciting even without the extra chases.

Fair enough. I didn't mean to sound confrontal about it. Was just curious is
all. But I do hope it works out... I wasn't really a fan of apple until I
got my ipod touch for cheap a while back... and now I love it. Even without
and books, all the entertainment you can get from seemingly useless apps is
awesome. lol

Beware the grue!

Zombies will still approach you during the clips in between songs.

The zombie chases occur when you're tracking is on. If you don't speed

hello all,
after hearing that there are some accessible iPhone games listed on the

Re: [Audyssey] sorting out the available iPhone games?

2012-10-10 Thread dark

Hi.

I'm afraid we don't have many audio games for the Iphone on audiogames.net
yet, just stem stumper, papasanga, the nightjar and king of Dragon pass,
but hopefully if I get an Iphone this wil change, or if arqmeister one of
our newer db editers could add some in.

You can't unfortunately search by platform at the moment, simply because
platforms of games can vary in the index from dreamcast, to online brouser
based, to mud or even specific if languages like zcode or glulx for some
games.

Phil's list of Iphone games over at pcsgames.net is the place to look,
though as I said this will hopefully change in the future.

least any areas near me I could trust myself to run in without hitting a
wall!

Maybe when i get my Iphone I'll have to talk to the devs about this.

[Audyssey] Question about formats on Baf's Guide to the IF Archive

2012-10-10 Thread Keith

Hi, I have been trolling through the
Baf's Guide to the IF Archive and have found many games that seem to be in
the

Eamon/Apple II format. Are these games playable on a Win XP machine, and if
so, where can I get the interpretor or eemulator for it?

Thanks

Keith

Re: [Audyssey] Question about formats on Baf's Guide to the IF Archive

2012-10-10 Thread dark

Hi kieth.

that is a question with a complicated answer.

the bad news is that the only way to play them is with an aple Ii emulator,
and those don't output screen readable text.

the good news however is that Eamon deluxe is currently in developement,
which is an eamon upgrade that will run on windows xp and is intended to run
all the classic eamon adventures. It even has a screen reader friendly
format that redoes the menues in a way that is readable with a virtual
curser.

Eamon deluxe 5.0 is currently in developement and is being beta tested by
myself and several others.

some stand alone Eamon deluxe adventures can be found on
http://www.eamonag.org/pages/eamondx.htm

If however you'd like a copy of the beta, send an E-mail to
eamondel...@gmail.com

I'd highly recommend eamon. it was a text adventure rpg system. it has a
simple parza but one which can still create puzzles without! uess the verb
or other horribleness, it has combat, companions and other fun stuff, and
adventures range from simple 10 minute dungeon hacks to full on epic quests
that take hours to finish.

Writing of course varies with the author, though some I've played have been
fantastically wr written.

Best of all in my book is the fact that you can go through multipel
adventures with the same character, gaining treasure, then coming back to
the guild of free adventurers after each outing to put your money in the
bank or even spend it on better weapons or improving your stats.

There are even people still writing adventures for Eammon deluxe today,
with three new ones produced this year, plus, frank black the developer as
he converts classic apple adventures to eamon deluxe is making several
improvements and changes along the way as well.

I'd certainly recommend it if you like rpgs.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Now my phd is finished I really want to get back to exercizing, plus it's

methods for that, and if I can flee ravenous zombies at the same time all
the better, sinse anything is better with zombies! :D.

 Hi Dark,
Using the version that came out a few months ago, you actually can
participate in zombie chases using the accelerometer. You specify where
 you
will be carrying the phone--pocket, hand, arm band--and tell it you want
zombie chases on. I have outrun zombies on my treadmill several times,
though I'm sure it's always more fun out in the open.

Hmm christina, I'm stil not sure, sinse I was rather looking forward to
outrunning zombies while running, and it would be quite irritating if
 there
were bits of the game that were utterly unplayable because of lack of
 enough
vision to engage in cross country running in large open areas, or at
least any areas near me I could trust myself to run in without hitting a
 wall!

Maybe when i get my Iphone I'll have to talk to the devs about this.

Re: [Audyssey] iPhone Audio Games Extant question (was: Justtried an Iphone, my thoughts and questions)

2012-10-10 Thread goshawk on horseback
thanks, this was very useful, I alone found 5 new games of interest to me.
I thought you may also like to know, as you have it listed, that the steve
jackson's sorcery one seems to have been withdrawn at the moment, as it is
being re-vamped by a new developer.
I found this out when, after a few times of not being able to find it in the
app store, then trying via iTunes, and it seeming to not be available in any
app store, not just the UK one, I contacted the fightingfantasy.com site,
which still had it as available, and got the following reply:
Hello,
You may not be aware that the original Sorcery! app is no longer available,
however it has changed hands and will be available from
Inkle
http://www.inklestudios.com/sorcery
on iOS next year.

Fighting Fantasy is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year by releasing
a new gamebook by Ian Livingstone - Blood of the Zombies.
I included the developer site, because as I said to applevis when I also
told them, may be now would be a good time to contact them, whilst the app
is still being done, to hopefully insure that it at least stays as
accessible as the old one, or better still, that it is more accessible.

Our questions are these - for you, Dark, but also
 the Audyssey community...
