It doesn't help that things like the Lifeproof case for the IPhone exist, either. That just encourages people to see how much abuse their phones can take, just to see if the case actually lives up to its name. I think the testing involved having phones being run over by cars. I wouldn't be surprised if similar gear now exists for laptops and other electronics. You may be right. But I will never abuse equipment to be sure that it is well built. The stories of knocking it off of a table, flinging it halfway across the room, all due to careless or rough handling make me cringe! I don't necessarily "baby" equipment, but I don't beat it to death, either. I have heard people bang on their laptop keyboards so hard that they seem to be trying to drive the keys through the bottom of the machines, and there is no reason to do that. Then, these same people complain about the flimsy way that they are made. I have told them that they broke the machine by abusing it. --- Be positive! Exactly. I usually plan on losing at least one hard drive per year with my setup, so I generally keep a couple spares on hand at all times. That said, drives are pretty much the only thing that blow up on me - I've had probably 20 drives fail over the years, but only two power supplies, and zero of anything else that I can remember. The worst part about it? The drives are where -all- of the important stuff is. If you lose all your drives, you lose your recordings, your software, your music, your games, etc. If you lose a processor or power supply, you can just swap out for a new one, but if your last good drive goes, you're screwed. Always keep lots of backups of your data. I'd like to testify to the fact that babying your hardware will not necessarily make it last longer. As with any piece of computer technology, do a little research and you'll see plenty of stories from people who have had gear break almost instantly, and just as many stories of people whose same equipment has lasted decades under heavy abuse. Hi Shaun, Actually, for basic document storage it doesn't require much space, and a person can get by with free cloud storage with the various cloud storage providers. I believe Microsoft gives those with a Windows Live account 7 GB free. That's quite a bit for basic documents. Obviously, if someone has mp3s, podcasts, whatever they'll need space, but let me remind you the purpose of this thread is talking about backing up keys. Surely a basic cloud storage account is more than plenty for those sorts of needs.
