Re: [Audyssey] Announcing release of Yellowbonnet from Valiant Galaxy Associates

2015-06-09 Thread Valiant Galaxy Associates

Hi.
Aaron here... Thanks Shaun, happy to hear you like this one. I would
like to have us support PayPal too, so maybe it'll happen eventually. No
guarantee though, Apparently Dennis has already poked around at that
idea a little in the distant past, according to a post from himself on
our release announcement thread on the audiogames.net forum. We'll see
if he feels like going at it again.

That said though, and I mean this in the best way possible, why not try
to store your info electronically so you can access it, if you can't
commit it to memory? By memory here, I mean the human brain, lol. I got
someone to tell me what my card is and I wrote it in a text file. Of
course, be careful not to have that out in plain site so anyone can get
it. If necessary, put it on a flash drive that you don't have plugged in
until you need it, could probably get one of those for the price of
Yellowbonnet, oops that's bad business on my part, shame on me.

Anyway this has come up a few times on the Audiogames.net forum too.
Mixed in among all the messages where people want to complain about the
name Guidedog because they think it singles out blind folks are some
messages where people want us to support Pay Pal because they are blind
and don't have access to their credit card details, grin.

No mistake, though, I like PayPal as much as the next guy, we shall see
where things go. Thank you again for your good feedback.

Announcing Yellowbonnet from Valiant Galaxy Associates We are happy
to announce the inauguration of our new line of minigames. These
games will be priced inexpensively and allow us to explore other
genres and time periods from our main line of Valiant Galaxy
products. Fresh from the amazing efforts of our beta test team comes
Yellowbonnet. Yellowbonnet is the first minigame in Valiant Galaxy
Associates’ series of Western games. In the game, the player takes
on the role of a new arrival in the western town of Yellowbonnet in
the year 1885. As a newcomer, you need income. There are six jobs
hidden about the map, as well as objects for the finding that can be
sold for money. Complete all six jobs in the shortest amount of time,
and gain as much money as possible. But be warned: Yellowbonnet
holds dangers as well. Mad bulls, vicious outlaws, and drunken
cowboys can all pose a threat as you progress through the town.
Yellowbonnet uses a map mode for exploration and movement and a menu
mode for interaction and combat. The map is laid out on a simple
seven by seven grid and the town has twenty locations, and five main
streets. As the player navigates they will find characters to
interact with, locations to look at and search, and possibly items to
buy or sell. The controls are simple, and the gameplay quick. A
typical game can be completed in 15-45 minutes. Yellowbonnet
is completely self-voicing. The game is menu-driven, and there is no
need to worry about being able to place your mouse in an exact
position. Documentation is included with the game itself, and you
can access our online documentation from inside the game. The game
is forgiving, and if you must take a phone call or step away from
your computer, your Wild West adventure will still be waiting. With
over three dozen characters, twenty locations, and a high degree of
random chance, the game is extremely replayable. Yellowbonnet is our
first game to utilize the GuideDog Games service. GuideDog is a
revolutionary games distribution service designed to act as an
interface between game developers and visually impaired players
(similar to Steam). The service is operated by Dennis Towne, owner
and operator of Alter Aeon, and uses the same credit card encryption
and account management system that Alter Aeon uses. Once you have an
account with GuideDog, you can purchase any of our future games
through it with no trouble. Account creation is quick and easy, and
purchasing a game from start to finish takes about five minutes.
Yellowbonnet needs heroes, won’t you step up and be counted? ---

Re: [Audyssey] info AudioGames Game Engine

2015-06-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Mohsin,

I don't thin kit is so much people aren't willing to accept the
suggestion so much as there are some really big issues that need to be
addressed.

To start with we could discuss the issue of programming languages and
tools. As you know many audio game developers have been going solo for
so long that they have developed very specific interests when it comes
to languages and tools. That is a big problem because in order to work
together they are going to have to agree on the same language, tools,
and similar coding conventions else there is going to be a serious
conflict of interest from the get go.

Then, if we are going to expand in to the sighted market we are going
to need some people who are decent graphics artists. People who know
how to do decent graphics design and someone to instruct audio game
developers about the art of graphics animation. Not impossible, but
needs to be considered before breaking into the mainstream market with
sighted players.

I don't disagree with you that our audio games should evolve the
question is how to do it. There are real technical and other issues
that need to be addressed before that can and will happen.

Cheers!

I believe you can just play.

There are some extra currencies you can buy from the in game store which
obviously would need net access but I don'tbelieve there is anything special
required in the game itself.

Hi, do you know if this game requires data once it's downloaded? I.e., do
you have to use the game center to play it once it's downloaded do you
just play on your phone without having to be connected to the Internet?
Just curious. I am considering downloading it, I love games like this.

Hello Dakotah Rickard!

I also raised the same point couple months back but people however, are
it seems, not ready to accept the suggestion, although some of the
audio games developer companies are doing some projects together e.g.
"psycho strike" etc. however, we need more and bigger companies to
emerge in order to produce better and market competing games, which
are not only for blind exclusively but, sighted people could also
play them. why limit ourselves, why not explore the new boundries?
why not push the existing boundries?

the game industry is evolving, so I think that our audio games should
also evolve.

cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] info AudioGames Game Engine

2015-06-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John,

You have hit upon the major issue with developing such a product. It
would certainly be a worthwhile project, something I know I could
certainly do, but the audio games market is so small there isn't much
financial incentive in developing the engine. Considering the end
product would likely be pretty high I do not think I'd get many sales
to compensate for the time and effort put into developing the product.

Cheers!

Here are the locations for the various items.
1 cane as you get in, used in the room with the fireplace.
the can of spray used in the tower dropped after you have
successfully completed the fireplace objective.

sandwidches and drink found in the pantry, used to boost your fuel level.
cream found in kitchen, used for the wind chime ariea.
candle found in bathroom of bedroom.
these are not all items but the feather and match will be round on
the upper floors.
The brrush is needed from the downstairs bathroom as well as this
there is a secret enterence to be opened up stairs.
After you hit level2, go and go west and run through that scene and
get the whip.

if you try to do that first it will make the game die.
Once you have the whip go to the room with the belted person and unlock it.
handle that and get the clamps.
the next room needs you to get the nut cracker.
The last room you can really smash yourself but I'd go to as far as
you can and then run through either way you get the phone.

most items you get automatically but some you have to get.
Its not that hard.
I mean in most rooms you actually see the item to obtain, and you are
either given it or obtain it yourself.
In the clock room you can do various thing in fact in all bar the
lower rooms on 3 and 4 you can do a lot of extra junk that doesn't
matter as such.

Hi Bryan,

That explains why you didn't get far through the game. Most of the
items are acquired by sexually satisfying the women in the game. The
food is basically there for energy, and the cane is there to satisfy
the woman in the room with the fireplace. Otherwise if you didn't
satisfy the women in the proper order you couldn't complete the game
as they each would give you a sex toy or item after having sex with
you.

Cheers!

That makes sense. About all I managed to do was find food and a cane.

Re: [Audyssey] info AudioGames Game Engine

2015-06-09 Thread Dakotah Rickard
Frankly, I'm glad someone from out in the world of sighted gaming is
now putting their knowledge out there.

The reason we have so few games and so few gaming companies is that
everyone has the DIY approach integrated into their activities. Yes,
it's true that a single individual making a game from scratch may have
a fuller understanding of their game and games in general. However, we
have maybe one or two games a year due to this mindset. Nobody is
willing or able to work together in a cohesive way to create games.
Our developers are amazing because they do, in general, design and
code a game from scratch. Most of them even collect the assets of the
game. However, when a single project takes years to produce, and when
that project is the only one that developer has in the works, we see
the difficulties of making audio games.

The closest comparison to our developers is the Indie start-ups out
there. However, the huge difference between an indie startup and one
of our developers is that the startup generally has an engine like
Unity and a wide variety of tools. That's why an indie startup can
literally create a game, albeit of dubious quality, in a week. They
plug and play elements. Our developers create software from scratch.
The difficulty is this. Indie games can be expensive, but that usually
means a price of $15 or so at the most. Many indie startups,
especially in the mobile space, charge much less. However, because our
developers are making these games from absolute scratch, they are
charging $30 or $40.
Then, their work is being compared to the output of the Triple A
publishers so many people have heard of. The casual player says
something like "Well, Mortal Kombat has this feature. Why doesn't your
game?" Not realizing that there were hundreds of people involved in
bringing any of those games to fruition.
We have very few tools in place at all for game creation. That's why
anyone who wants to get things done quickly usually uses a high
overhead programming language like Pithon. Now, fortunately, we have
BGT. Still, if you want to make a game in BGT, you're still coding
basically from scratch. You just have less to worry about.

As an end note of a more personal nature, I wish you luck, Daniele.
You are losing sight, something I never really experienced. You are
being proactive, and I admire that. However, I must offer you this,
though it pains me to do so. Many of our games are in 2 or 2.5-d. The
audio interface doesn't, in general, lend itself to a fully 3-d
experience. Ears just aren't that precise. Further, since many of our
games are developed by companies of one person, there isn't a lot of
call for level/world design on the scale you're used to working.
Things don't have to be that way, but they are that way. I wish you
all the good fortune in the world, and maybe your mainstream
perspective can help us all.

Re: [Audyssey] info AudioGames Game Engine

2015-06-09 Thread john
I think such an engine would be a really nice product to see made available.
I've got no clue how such a thing works, but it sounds like a pretty solid
amount of work to take on. Best of luck.
I do think its probably worthwhile to point out that the audiogaming market
is relatively small compared to the "mainstream" one, however. There are
very few audiogame devs (to my knowledge) consisting of more than a couple
people, and most of them are completely solo.

First of all sorry for the duplicated mail.
Then I thank you very very much for your clear and precise answers. I
perfectly understand what you're saying.

Let me spend just few words.

I'm 32 and for 10 years I'm a freelancer 3D Artist for Architectural
Visualization and Game Design, you know... modeling, lighting, texturing,
scripting, dymanics, rendering, etc.
A disease is shutting down my sight toward blindness quite fast since last
year, so I'm looking around and trying to use my know-how and experience
for a new kind of job.

That said, graphic videogames evolution followed precise steps during years
till now, and the same should happening to audiogames too.
The result of this "evolution" is the creation of 3 professionals: the
developer which set up the tools, the designer which uses the tools, and
the player which enjoy the final result.

If I want to sell my products and gain money (in my case rendered images),
I can't start from programming a Render Engine software, or a 3D package
like 3ds max, or go in Africa and buy silicon to build my own 8cores
processors.

So I totally agree with you Thomas when you say that I should learn more in
depth coding and program the application by myself, but only because in
this moment there's no chance. I hope you agree with me that this is an old
style. This happened for videogames in the 50s.
Nowadays if you want to do something you need an interface, an engine, a
software to work on in any kind of application, no matter if blind or not;
without that the audogames world (but not only) created by blind people
will remain limited to developers, it means no evolution, and in few
words... no money.

Please consider also that a visual Game Engine hasn't stop his evolution;
as many mistakenly think, a Game Engine like Unity or whatever isn't used
only to create videogames. His flexibility allows a designer to create any
kind of interactive experience, not only into a 3D environment. A lot of
companies are interested to it, and they are creating a vast amount of
content/plugin/script to interact with it. For example the "3Dio Omni Free
Space" binaural microphones company creates a script to import your 3D
Space Audio records into Unity 3D space; you can explore and interact with
an environment just listening, similar to Ambisonic experience.

So, even if I have yet a lot of things to talk about, and also a lot of
things to learn, I'd like to ask this simple question:
Do you feel the lack of a Game Engine with an accessible interface built
ad-hoc for VI?

If yes we share the same ideas, and I want to inform that I'm moving my
first steps on both direction:
1-Building a new Game Engine accessible only via Keyboard+Screen Reader, no
visual interface except for common menu bar.
2-Making accessible yet existing Game Engine, after all NVaccess team
hourly rate to do that is only around $200... considering that in Italy the
same is around 250euros...

Thanks for reading guys.

Bye!
