Well, I tried that, but no game.
I even uninstalled the shockwave player and reinstalled it, but still no
luck.
Is there supposed to be a separate window where the game plays, or does it
play in the same window as the web page? I ask this because there are no
other windows opening, it goes to the link, I see the web page and hear the
sound of the game. /Any other help?

 Hi Lisa,
I had the same problem that when you start the game your computer

 loses focus on it.
The way to solve this is I thing start the game then hit f5 to start it
 again.
I am going by memory that is a few years old, so it may not be completely

What it appears to be doing is simply integrating it into the web page

 Hi Lisa,
Here is just a few trouble shooting tips you can try.

 1. Make sure dx8vb.dll is in your
 c:\windows\system32
directory. If not you will have to grab a copy off of someone who has
one, or install it via something like Jim Kitchen's winkit program.
 2. Restart the system after doing a game install. Sometimes some games
are picky under Vista, and the system needs to be restarted before they
 will run.
 3. If 2 fails attempt to launch the application as administrator. Some
games like Troopenum by BSC require this to run properly on some accounts.
To run the application as administrator go to the applications icon in
the start menu, press the context menu key, arrow to run as
administrator, and press enter. Then, the application will be launched
 using administrator rights.
 Hth.

[Audyssey] question about games and vista

2007-11-19 Thread Lisa Leonardi
Hi, all.

I just got a new laptop, and it has Windows Vista on it.
I downloaded the demo of The Ultimate Sudoku from Adora Entertainment. When I
try to run the game, here is what it tells me. It says that an active x cannot
create object.
Anyone know what that means, and is it just because I'm running Vista?
And yes, direct x is installed.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [Audyssey] Side-Scrollers vs FPS.

2007-03-24 Thread Lisa Leonardi
Exactly. I often find myself getting lost when I play shades of doom. I
really like the game, enough to have purchassed it, but having to keep my
bearings while at the same time trying to keep from getting killed can be
difficult at times. Luckily, with shades of doom, i can at least tell if a
monster is behind me because of the additional music that plays. But I do
have that problem sometimes distinguishing if an object or door is in front
or behind.

 Hi Lisa,
Agreed. Side-scrollers are inherently much easier for us since we are
only interested in for general directions up, down, left, and right. It
is also easier to pinpoint where an item is as we can here it left or
right and only need to walk or jump in that general direction to grab
it. I really like this style of game play. Sure it is only 2D, but they
are easy to play and are a throwback to when games were all about fun
and not heavy graphics and sound.
I would like to write more side-scrollers, but it does seam there are
some that feel they have no value any more.
FPS games on the other hand are great, but they really are harder to
play. Games like Sarah and Shades of Doom are far more harder when it
comes to figuring out the levels and finding where things are, and I
even have a hard time figuring out if an item, is in front or behind me,
and that is something I don't like about FPS.

 Lisa Leonardi wrote:
Plus, the games in the 21st century are almost solely focussed on the
graphical nature of the game. I, for one, am looking forward to another
 side
scroller. Though I do have one or two of them, I don't find the games
 with
the ability to turn in any direction as enjoyable. I like them, but I
constantly feel like I'm in a maze. Where the sighted can look at the
 whole
picture of the thing, and recognize where they are in relation to other
things, we have to rely on maybe a scan or coordinates. So, I can't wait
 for
 Monty.

Dragon warrior is a game made by Dragonslayer games.
Dragon warriors is claimed to be a game, but its just a mod of super
 liam.
Just a final note on this, without resurrecting the dragon warriors topic
and the problems with Ivan, maybe the name dragon warriors came from
 dragon warrior.
Of course it can happen accidentialy, but after the things which he did

go down to the blind players link and enter on it.

Type new for new character and press enter
Type in your character name then a password
 Re enter the password.
It will ask you several questions with a y or n answer and one on
 whether
you want your character to be male or female.

It will then give you a choice of options I would press option 1 for

As I said I got a lot of help from a friend.

Hi mark the web address is:

 http://www.dentinmud.org/alter-1.0/

go down to the blind players link and enter on it.

Type new for new character and press enter
Type in your character name then a password
 Re enter the password.
It will ask you several questions with a y or n answer and one on
 whether
you want your character to be male or female.

It will then give you a choice of options I would press option 1 for
 mud
 school.

As I said I got a lot of help from a friend.

 Hi Lukas,
In your post you stated there have been several good 3D games for the
blind written. You mind naming me a few? To my knolege there are none in
 the accessible games market.
Keep in mind that I am not talking virtual 3D audio. I am talking fully
3d. That means you have six, I repeat six directions of movement
including: left, right, forward, back, up, and down. In other words
everything is drawn to true shape, skale, and you can move in any
 direction a human can.
I have seen on this list people eroniously call Shades of Doom a 3D
game. While it has a virtual 3D audio emulation your movement is still
only 2D. You can move left, right, forward, and back. You do not have
any upward or downward motion. Such as having to jump up and catch a
rope and climb up it. You also cant jump down in to a pit and grab say a
gem, and them jump out on to the surface.

 Neo wrote:
Why couldn't a side scroller have enough replay value? I tend to agree
 with
most folks here who are for the side scroller option. Although I love
 the
 3D
concept a lot and this new Angela character reminds me of the famous
 Tomb
Raider and my favourite Lara Croft so much, and although I don't have
 any
real relation to the original (old) Montezuma's Revenge, I still prefer
 the
side scroller option cause there have already been several rather good
 and
complex 3D games while we have only one side scroller that's atractive
 and
funny, but it's still just one. :-)
As most people said, when you release the original Monty as intended,
 you
can do some 3D version later on if ya like. Just my thoughts.
 Thanks,
 Lukas

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about Montezuma's Revenge.

2006-09-29 Thread Lisa Leonardi
I'd play the game whether it was a side-scroller or a 3d game. But, I really
do like the sice-scroller feel of the game as it is. Just my thoughts.
Also, I really like that idea of having two modes for the game, so you could
have the option of save and restore.

Subject: [Audyssey] Thoughts about Montezuma's Revenge.

 Hello list,
Today I have been doing some major revising of the Monty game engine,
and I've really had some ideas how I could make the game better, but by
introducing the changes it may completely alter the original intent of
the game. Since these changes are so dramatic in nature I would like a
friendly discussion on the matter and sound out everyones thoughts about
what I am thinking of doing.
First, I have had several emails since I have taken the game over to add
a save and restore feature. Since the game was initially intended as an
arcade game I couldn't do that and keep the game scoring fair. However,
I can do what was done in GMA Tank Commander and have two different
modes. If you play standard game it will allow saving and restoring
games without keeping score. If you selected play arcade mode it would
play the game as an arcade game, keep score, and disable saving and
restoring games. What do you all think?
Second, I've had several requests for a first person style game rather
 than a traditional side-scroller. Honestly, I tend to agree a 3D first
person style game would be so much more fun and interesting. You would
have six directions of movement, left, right, forward, back, plus up and
down. It would allow for more complex temples and mazes. However, this
is a major deviation from the original game in the end the game would
probably evolve into something else and not really be Monty any more
unless this was Like Montezuma's Revenge II or something like that. In
other words a sequel rather than a direct one to one version. Any
 thoughts?
I am aware of people like Michael's opinion that the game should follow
the original as close as possible. I could do that, and even technically
put in the original character if I wanted. Lot's of ideas, and I am
looking to ad some new options.

Re: [Audyssey] the unfortune regarding accessible games and mainstreamgames

2006-09-29 Thread Lisa Leonardi
I've never heard of this cartridge thing. However, mainstream games that are
bought for the computer or other systems such as Nintendo or Xbox, cost just
as much or more than accessible games. I know that my brother has bought
games for his xbox that cost nearly $50. So from my perspective, accessible
games are actually an incredibly good deal. Think of it this way. Most
products specifically designed for the blind are usually incredibly
expensive. The reason being that there isn't nearly as much demand for
something specifically designed for the blind as there would be for
something mainstream. Since costs go up when demand is lower, prices for
specially adapted products are generally high. I was actually pleasantly
surprised at how reasonable games for the blind are.
Another thing, I'm not sure where you get your sounds versus graphics idea.
Graphics are actually incredibly expensive, and games that contain a lot of
graphics and special effects are usually more expensive.

 HI all

I would like to give my 2 sense regarding something I noticed with main
stream games. I'm not sure if this is the same as Nintendo. For you guys
who first had sight, have you also played these tv games? It's a
 cartridge with 60 games on it which you connect to your standard tv;
it's a whole procedure to configure it, because you need an extra
channel for it. Anyway when I was a child, my mom bought me a cartridge
with 60 games on it. I played these games with the help of my sighted
friends. My mom paid r100 for the whole cartridge. ON there is games
like pack man, Mario brothers, etc. It's a pitty that accessible games
costs more than mainstream games on a cartridge. . Oh sorry, I forgot
to say, r100 south African money is equal to 12 dollars. So for 12
dollars you get 60 main stream games, some of them are small games and
some are multi level games. The obvious reason why accessible games is
not that cheap is because it needs more sounds. The difference between
accessible and mainstream games is that accessible games uses sounds
instead of graphics, so that is why accessible games costs more. I
know of many sighted kids who exchange cartridges with games between
them for free. It's a pitty accessible games is not that popular. I
mean a kid would go to his friend's house and give him a cartridge with
newer games for free. If only accessible games were that cheep so that
60 accessible games could fit onto a cartridge and plugged into the
computer and we only had to pay 12 dollars for it but the sounds it uses
is much larger than sighted games.

I'm just trying to discuss my point of view regarding main stream
 games.

Subject: [Audyssey] achaea alias, triggers and sound packs for gmud

Hello all, This is Scott. Msn has my account in my wifes name. I have a
question. Has anyone designed a set of aliases, and sound packs for
achaea for gmud? If so, what kind of character was it for? Also, wasn't
there a way to use zmud with jfw? I'm thinking a long time ago, someone
wrote an article showing how this was possible. I'd like to try zmud
againe, but I don't know how workable its going to be. Most muds are
calling for compression so I'm looking for a workable client that will
give the compression and ease of configuration. I'd like to try
monkeyterm for this, but don't know if it supports compression, and there
is no actual online documentation for it anymore. A lot of the sound
packs call for some scripting in monkeyterm that I'm not totally
comfortable with yet, though it does make a mud beautiful to play if you
can make it work with that client.

Re: [Audyssey] the negativity of santa claus in accessible games

2006-09-22 Thread Lisa Leonardi
Even if there was a rating system implemented, I still don't see games like
toy robbery as a threat to children. I do know, however, that some of the
gaming web sites do put disclaimers on their games. For instance, Shades of
Doom does put a warning about its sounds in the game, and states that it's
best for those over 13. But to me, Toy Robbery and Bobby's Revenge are just
harmless. There are some audio games out there that I wouldn't feel
comfortable with a kid playing, if I had one of course. But it wouldn't
bother me if a child of mine played things like Toy Robbery. I would hope
that any child I had would know the difference between a game and real life.

I agree. Another example I could use was a time a few years back when my

mother, my sister and I spent some time at a downtown park in Oregon. My

sister's dog was with us and, being a more aggressive breed, she was on
leash. That was also the law, that all dogs in these parks must be kept
 on
leash. Anyway, there was a guy who had a dog nearby, and his dog wasn't
 on
any kind of a leash. Well, this dog came running up to where we were
sitting, ignoring the warning from my sister's dog. Well, quite
 naturally
this guy's dog was bitten, not severely but it was bitten. The owner
 said he
was seriously considering pressing charges against my sister, in his
 words
because you don't control your dog. I'm sorry, but if you don't put
 your
dog on a leash and it suddenly runs up to another dog, there's the
 strong
possibility one of them's going to get bit.
The same thing goes for games and the people who play them. If a
 parent
buys a game for his or her kid without first researching what the game's

about and the rating it carries, especially when the kid is known to
 have
anger issues, then it's hardly surprising if the kid later kills someone

else. Not that it's the game's fault. It'd be the parent's fault for
providing the media that inspired the murder or, if the parent was
 unaware
of the kid possessing it, it's the parent's fault for not taking a
 greater
hand in monitoring what their child was playing, watching or listening
 to or
reading. I personally think the whole thing is riddiculous. Companies
 attach
ratings and warnings to their games for a very specific reason. If a
 parent
chooses to ignore that or to ignore the fact that their child somehow
 came
into possession of a violent game without their knowledge, then it's the

parent's fault for not taking action. I'm sorry if I seem dispassionate
about this sort of thing but you have to wonder what these parents were
doing when these kids were doing this stuff. Granted I'm sure some of
 these
parents did actually try to monitor their kids but obviously they
 weren't
thorough enough. It goes back to the fact that it's not only the game's
fault if someone goes out and beheads someone with a machete. It's the
person's fault for being dim enough to let the game go to their head.

Re: [Audyssey] Game ratings was negativity of santa claus in accessiblegames

2006-09-22 Thread Lisa Leonardi
Along with that, in Shades of Doom, you're killing monsters. I think a lot
of the problem comes from games where people approach other people and kill
them. Another thought is this. There really is an incredible difference
between an audio game and a visual based game. In an audio games, you may
hear the sound of a death yell or something like that, but really, from what
I've noticed, there quite tame. In a lot of the visual based games, you're
actually watching heads blow off of people, and blood pouring out
everywhere. According to my sighted friends, the games are only becoming
more and more realistic as time goes by. I know that many of the games out
there look quite realistic, and I do think it's different to hear an audio
death cry, as opposed to actually watching the head get shot off a person
and to see blood and gore. Not pleasant, but food for thought.

 Hi Nicol,
Upuntil now no one in the accessible games market has decided on a game
rating system. We have discussed it a time or two, but came to no
 conclusions.
Sometimes it is hard to decide what catagory a game falls in to. Take my
revised STFC project or the original STFC for that matter. The theme is
around Star Trek, but it is about all out war. So in that term there is
some violent ship-to-ship combat in it. However, I don't see it as
violent enough to get people to kill people. I'd put a rated E on it
since everyone should be able to play it.
Now, take Shades of Doom. Lots of fighting some killing, and perhaps one
of the most vilent games we have in the accessible games comunity. How
would we rate it? T for teen? M for mature? It really depends on point
of view, and compared to some sighted games SOD is tame.

They're just games. If you're concerned about what games are teaching
children, I'd worry about the fact that you have five-year-olds playing
fighter games like Mortal Combat. I think games like Toy Robbery and Bobby's

would like to give upbuilding criticism. I'm not use to offer upbuilding
criticism. If you think my criticism is not upbuilding, kindly advise
me but please don't put me on moderated status because I really intend
 it to be upbuilding criticism.

So far there are 2 accessible games around the theme christmass
produced. Both of them are really nice games, but its sad that both of
them features the negative side of santa claus. These 2 games are toy
robbery from l-works and bobby's revenge from BSC games. IN the one
game the boy wants to kill santa claus and in the other game the boy
wants to steal santa claus' presents. Don't you think that children will
learn to be naughty through these games if they don't deserve presents.
Say for instance a child is naughty and he doesn't deserve presents for
christmass. By playing these games will also teach him to do a similar
thing towards the person in his family or friend circuit or parent's
friend circuit who plays the role of santa claus?

I think when developing games around the theme of santa claus, the focus
should be shifted more positively. Like the suggestion I mentioned to
liam about the ape, protecting presents from harm.

Its just upbuilding criticism I would like to share.

A game can be developed for example where santa claus runs around,
giving presents. You must be quick to catch him to get a present. Each
time you catch him you get a present. A game can be developed where
santa claus is also riding on a sleigh, each time you catch him on his
sleigh he gives you a present. It can also be a game where the
sleigh goes from left to right and if you miss him, if he gets it right
to get off the screen, then you loose the game. Just like bobby's
revenge, but the focus is shifted more positively; each time you catch
him on his sleigh you get a present; instead of trying to shoot him
because you were naughty, not deserving a present.

Hi.
I love that idea!! And, one more thing, in case you haven't already thought
of it. I'm thinking this is what you're last post was implying, but I wasn't
sure if it would be exactly this way or not. So, here goes.Since you would
have to play one ship and stick with it, would it be possible to have a menu
where you get to pick which ship you play? Kind of like picking a team in a
sports game. That would give the game more diversity and more playability,
and also utilize all of the ships you created for the turn-based game. What
do you think?

 Hi listers,
As all of you are now aware the original STFC source code is gone so I
am going to have to rewrite the game from scratch or from near scratch
no matter what I do. Over on the audyssey list Nicol was making a
suggestion of making Trek 2000 real time. I'm wondering since I have to
rewrite anyway how would you all feel if I just rewrote STFC as a real
 time game?
If we stick with the same old turn based game it will be basicly the
 same only better than before.
If we go to real time the game could be more like Lonewolf consisting of
missions you would have to cary out against the Romulans, Breen,
 Klingons, Borg, Breen, etc...
Since it is in real time you would have to play one ship and stick with
it. However, I can imagine how fun it would to be say the Defiant and
cloak and and attack various targets deep behind enemy lines, or you
could be the Enterprise patroling the Romulan Neutral zone when you are
 jumped by the Romulans.
 What do you all think?

 Hi all.
For all those who think the portal dissapears, well aparently it doesn't.
 It just moves.
If you scan properly in the room with the level1 teleport there is a door.
its almost in the same place as the level1 teleport though so hard to
 spot.
Now go through that and down the passage.
Through the door at the end and then search for another door, again
hard to spot but you can get there.
Then shoot the monsters and the portal is there.
If it aint there, its in the other place.
I recomend getting the armour first, shooting the monsters in
the room with the first end game portal.
If its there go back and finnish the other locations.
 A small tip.
If you can avoid destroying the portal, well its lightly protected.
 Nothing major guards that.
a cyborg, and sometimes a couple humans with lasers.

The answer is, both. Let's say that you have 3 quarters stacked on each
other, and there is also a quarter to the left and another quarter to the
right of the top coin in this stack of 3. Drop a quarter onto the stack
 of
3, and the stack will explode. The quarter to either side of the stack
 will
also explode, as will any quarter on down a string. In other words, all
coins of the same denomination as the one you drop that are touching one
another will explode. Check what is to the left or right of your location
with the left and right shift keys respectively. When playing, if a bomb
 is
sitting on a stack, and the top coin of that stack is the same as the one
you are about to drop, drop the coin on that stack, and all coins down
 that
stack that are the same denomination will explode. In this case, it
 doesn't
matter whether they are touching each other or not. If the top coin in a
stack that has a bomb sitting on it is different than the one you drop,,
 or
you are focussed on a stack with a bomb and the bomb goes off before you
either move away from the stack or before you drop your coin, you lose 10
seconds of time off the clock. Now, work at the game, and have a blast!

Re: [Audyssey] cell phone games

2006-08-23 Thread Lisa Leonardi
Does this cell phone software work with all cell phones, or is it only meant
to wirk with a few models? I've been doing some research and have only found
stuff that works with particular models sold by particular cell phone
providers. I already have a provider, a cell phone, and would love to make
it talk so I can do more than just the basic sending and receiving calls.
Especially play games! It'd be great to have something to pass the time like
that.

reading the descriptions on the code factory website one is like simon

I was going to be looking for a cell phone etc and so forth, and I was
wondering if there was any games available for the blind to play on them.
In addition, I was wondering how in depth those games might be? Having
never owned a cell phone I have a hard time with playing games on a phone,
 other than phone tag, grin.

Now that I have shown it's possible to play this game, would anyone
be interested in a play-by-email game? The number of players will
influence choice of scenarios. In an ideal world, I'd like to play
one of the eight-player ones, but I'll settle for less if I can find
 some committed players.

insert S to put jaws on say all mode, and messed with the settings so they
were to my liking and that was it. Scripts may be useful for you, but I've

Re: [Audyssey] Table-top mapping.

2006-07-28 Thread Lisa Leonardi
Hi.

I've never ran a game, but I do play. I don't have any idea how I would go
about using the map if I were to run a game. When I play, other sighted
players generally place my miniature on the board, and describe the layout
and where the others are in relationship to me. It's not perfection, but it
works. So if it allows me to play, that's how I'll do it. Smile.

 Hi Chris,
I wish I could help you. But I have had that same problem. I have always
played with sighted players and had them help me position pieces but in
general I couldn't come up with anything other than a crude grid system.
 But
that sounds pretty much like excel so not much help there.
If you do find a solution, let us know, I am interested to see how you
 solved it.

Hello. For those of you who run table-top roleplaying games, like
Dungeons and Dragons, what solutions have you found to maintain maps
for complex battles. In my current campaign, my nine players, plus 3
NPCs, eight horses, wagon and baggage are about to be ambushed by
fifteen brigands, who will in turn be ambushed by the ogre band they
are fleeing from. This makes for a bewildering array of targets to
 track.

I'm using Excel to do the monkey-work of keeping track of initiative,
HP, etc, but I need a solution for tracking a battlefield that's
liable to encompass a one or two hundred square of terrain that
varies from open hillside to dense woods. I'm willing to provide
detailed descriptions for my sighted players, but I want a way to
track this sprawling fight for myself so I can tell the players what
they see and what their opponents are doing.

The description of the sprawling fight in the recent Audyssey gives
me some hope that there might be a solution for this more elegant
than an Excel sheet with positions marked on it.
