 Hi Blind guy,

Thanks, I appreciate you saying that you like my brain program. You know
I bought this little digital recorder and it has a microphone jack. So I
plugged a probe into it and stuck it in my ear and that is what my brain
 sounds like. grin

 Hi.

To get the game, you'll need to send an E-mail to Ian Humphries, on
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

and request it. He'll then send you a copy attached to an E-mail.

He's come up with some rather nice games (hearts and cribbage are my
personal favourites), so I'd advise checking out his site
http://www.omninet.net.au/~irhumph/blindgamers.htm to get an idea of all
 the
games he produces, you can also read a bit more about the Bg Uno game
 there
 as well.

 Hi,
I just tried the game book. I'm personally not impressed with it
so far for a few reasons. For one thing, it says this is a one-day
demo, which I think is way too short a time. The speech was also off
when the program was started for the first time, but I found out that
pressing the equals key will toggle it on or off. I suppose that's
not so bad, but I'm not impressed with the speech synthesizer they're
using (he sounds bored!) and there's a delay when selecting options
or typing in something. I'll admit I only played with this for a few
minutes, and haven't explored the program fully, so these are just my
 first impressions.
Thanks.

 Yours Sincerely,
 Kelly John Sapergia

I use Windows xp Home, and plan to do so for as long as possible. As long
as it meets my needs, which it currently does, and until Vista's bugs are
worked out to a point at which it is reliable and user friendly to users
 of
jaws, no change here. I'll bet there are more users of XP than there are
 of
Vista, and that you should make your games usable to the largest segment
 of
the blind gaming market. Making a product usable for 25 while cutting out
the other 175 current users, in my opinion, would be a bad move. While my
numbers are most likely not right, you get the idea, I'm sure. Thanks.

Subject: [Audyssey] .Net 2.0 vs 3.0 and Vista support.

 Hi all,
Recently I've been strongly considering upgrading all my games to the
.Net Framework 3.0 in order to better support windows Vista which others
and I now are using on a daily basis. The plus side of doing this is
that all that will be required is installing or upgrading DirectX to
Aug. 2007, and then install my games on Vista.
The downside is that users using anything earlier than Windows XP will
have no support for my games. I've read that .Net Framework 3.0 only
supports, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP all versions, and Windows
Vista. Which means if there are any of you still using Win 2K it will no
 longer be supported.
First, I'd like to know if there are any of you out there using or
playing my games on Windows 2000. I need to know how big an impact this
would be updating to .Net 3.0.
Second, how many have upgraded to Vista, or plan to upgrade to Vista in
 the next year or two.
 Thanks.

When I was experimenting with Sapi I wrote a little Swami Speaks program
where you ask it a question and then MS Sam speaks an answer from a
random set of choices. The answers all came off my toy crystal ball

It was especially funny when you asked it a question like does so and so

Anyway, it sounds like this is the stage of RS Games.

[Audyssey] Dos box

Hey Zakary, where do I get dos box from?

 cHello,
Unfortunately, there is no Windows version. I believe in Issue 36 Michael
had an interview with the game's author where among other things he said
that he'd lost the source code for the game and so couldn't update it.
Nor do I have any idea why Jaws acts that way. I don't use it myself and
so have no knowledge of how it works. I have had great success playing
the game with either Window-Eyes, or DosBox. But DosBox isn't for
 everybody. The setup is complicated.
I'm sorry i can't give you more hopeful news.

Fallthru I'd like to play this game. I remember trying it once several
years back, but ever since I updated to jaws 8 I've been having a lot
of problems getting Dos games to work properly. For some reason the
command boxes start up and immediately close back down. Is there a
windows version of this game somewhere? And if not, does anyone have
any ideas as to why Dos programs won't start on my computer? Its a jaws
problem, that I know, because I've had one of my sighted friends start
a dos program without jaws running, and it starts up fine, then I
started jaws while that window was still open and it immediately
closed. Hmm... But yeah, this definitely sounds like my type of game,
almost reminds me of Fable. Sounds awesome. - Original Message -

Subject: [Audyssey] An appreciation for FallthruHiya, Off and
on over the past year or so, I've been working at playing through an
old DOS game which Michael reviewed in Issue 1 of Audyssey. I've not
come anywhere close to beating it, and don't want to really. I've yet
to really make it much of anywhere--true, I've gotten fairly rich and
found a few rather amazing places, but haven't yet found any real
direction. I don't mind this in the least. One thing I love about this
game, which I haven't found anywhere else, is a sense of a world with
unlimited places to explore. There is this odd sense that if I just
keep going in a direction somewhere I'll find something interesting,
or run into a new town, or a new inn, or a new place where I can
appreciate the depth of detail that's offered here. I've never before
encountered a sense like the following: When the
character in Fallthru travels from town to town over roads, it seems
like he's really traveling somewhere. I get this odd sense that, wow,
that really did take three days! (That's game time, of course.) Since
I haven't really scratched the surface of this game yet, I have to
wonder what it'll be like if I keep going. I know this game isn't for
everyone. It's tedious and hard to get anywhere sometimes because
you're constantly trying to stay alive. There are so many places to go
that it is hard to choose. I find myself setting out long term goals
for spots I want to see and realizing, a few days and some food later,
that I really should've reconsidered. No other game has quite given me
this feeling. I'm just curious, therefore, if anybody on this list
still plays the game? If so, does it stay this engrossing all the way
through? No, don't answer that. I want to find out for myself. All
 the best, Zack.

Let me stress, though, that it isn't useable out of the box. I only
 got
it to work by luck, though if there is sufficient interest I'll write up a

If you're like me (and the rest of the world right now), you have
 discovered
the incredible challenge, fun, and intellectual stimulation of the Sarah
game. Like myself, I am sure you've stumbled on the puzzles you can't
 solve
no matter how hard you try. Or maybe you've been frustrated by the
 puzzles
 that seem to
 take a lifetime to solve.

These little puzzles can stump even the smartest of people. Quite
 frankly,
 I
was addicted to solving Sarah but kept getting stuck near the end.

Recently, I have discovered a method (more than one actually) that has
enabled me to solve puzzles in minutes. And when you're addicted to
 solving
 these
 things, it really helps.

I have discovered methods which make me a master and I am revealing them
 all
now in a walk through guide for you. Every possible thing you will need
 to
know about Sarah has been detailed. I have revealed methods for the
 beginner
and the expert. No Sarah enthusiast should continue without knowing these
 tricks!!!

 Here's just a small taste of what I will teach you;

. Learn what to do when you get stuck
. Learn Where to start each puzzle
 . Complete step-by-step methods
. Find out what to do when your solution does not match
. How to increase solving speed
. Understand the logic behind Sarah
. How to complete the last few chapters (no more guessing!!)
. How to solve the 7 potion puzzle (know where to start)
. Solve the game in Easy, Medium, even in the hard dificulty level.

A Beginner Sarah Player Can Quickly Become An Expert And Solve All
Puzzles...Even If You've Never Tried Before!!

If you're one of those people who are lost, wondering where this game
 came
from then its time for you to learn! Not only can I teach you how to
play, but also how to master Sarah and how to show up all your friends!!
 If
you're new the the world of Sarah and unsure how to start the game, don't
worry! I have laid out for you step-by-step the best way to begin
 solving.
Every last detail has been included to take YOU from a beginner to a
 master!

Stop Painting Yourself Into A Corner And Get To The Solution
 Faster...Even
 On The most difficult Puzzles!!

Even the best of the best get stuck from time to time, and I know how
frustrating it can be. I've had many people ask me about puzzles in the
 past
where they have agonized and gone in circles BUT now I have shown them
 the
tricks to get to the solution faster. You can easily become an Ultimate
Master of Sarah (just like me).
I have all the tips you need to increase your solving speed to complete
 any
 puzzle within minutes!!
It cost only $19.95 US until publication date, when the price decreases
 to
 $0.
It will be included in the Sarah-Patch4.exe and will be published some
 time
 in August 2007.

this amazing document will astound you in its ease of solving the puzzles
and in the quickness you can finish the game.

 smiles,
 Phil

I'm putting spoiler space in front of my messages so that the

So if I'm putting spoiler space in front of a question, its just to
 prevent
 stepping onto toes.

I've read the piece about fluffy in the hp books and it is so that the
 fire
lighting charm destroys the plant so that I have managed.
But now I'm really stuck guys. I've read the whole piece about the
 chamber
of puzzles. First of all harry and his friends gets into a chamber where
they catch a key on wings. I didn't find such a thing in the sarah game.
Next they plays chess and then they come into a passage where they drink
 wine to escape the flames.
Now in the sarah game I haven't find any place having something to do with
chess. I can here female and male voices saying something like wine, but
 my
x key tells me absolutely nothing. The only thing shift+d tells me is
 frog.
And yes I can hear a frog croaking. But I suppose like harry and his
friends did, sarah have to drink wine out of the little bottle to escape
 the
flames. Well first of all I don't hear any flames and I've stood in front
 of
one of the voices saying wine and tried every single possibility in the
game, nothing happens. No spell, no password, no pressing enter, nothing.
How do I drink the wine? How do I exit the chamber of puzzles. The only
 way
I can find is to aparate. Strange enough when I'm near to the devil snare
plant, shift+d tells me that the trap door and plant is so many feet ahead
of me but my x key only says devil snare plant, not trap door.
At one stage while in the chamber of puzzles I all of a sudden got in to
the honey duke sweet shop, I don't know how I got there.
Phil, can you please please do something about the bathrooms in a future
patch. If I'm in a bathroom I can't get out. I only can find the doors to
the toilets within the bathroom. Once I'm in a girls or boys bathroom I
can't find the way out. I try to listen for the snoring but there is no
 way
 I can find the exit.

 Hi phil
I can't get over the troll when on my broom. It still blocks my way. I
 hear
the troll 20 feet ahead of me, I get on my broom and I fly ahead and then
 I
just hear sarah saying oh no and woops and ouch and I can't get any
 further.
Pressing control+x does nothing, usually when a wall is in my way
 control+x
tells me in which direction the corridor turns.

are going slightly far. In light of the recent discussion about pyracy,
 I'm

 Please see:

I'm sorry for having to go through these sorts of things, but given the

 Also,
as I said, this isn't this person's first discussion of pyracy (as che

 Sorry again.

 all the best,

Actually, technically Voldemort isn't even entirely human anymore thanks
 to
the mutilation of his soul. And he never actually became a Hogwats
 teacher.
He tried to but was turned way, first by Armando Dippet and later by
Dumbledore. So it's not known whether or not he was actually able to
 create
a Horcrux using an object from all four of the Hogwarts founders.
 Hufflepuff
and Slytherin we know he found, but as to Ravenclaw or Gryffindor, it's
 still unclear.

 Hi Nicol,

There is a type of boss fight in the Sara game, which is Sarah against
 the
 2 bludgers.
But I can imagine the young voldemort deciding that the diary might not
 do
and having him putting a bit of himself in something in the castle that
 comes alive.
Mix the way the chess pieces were animated with the way the portraits
 talk
and think and you might have a close representation of a boss.
The only thing this robot voldemort could not do is cast spells.
Or how about if voldemort took over the brain of a House-Elf?
I think I will wait until book seven is released to speculate on what
 else
is in the castle to find.

The problem is that, even joined together as a unified community the blind
gaming community in particular is probably not likely to be able to come
 up
with the kind of money that most developers would ask for. The only sure
 way
to persuade them is to educate them, and there is a certain amount of
emotional apeal involved in that. I agree. Let's let the developer find
 out
how we feels when he's just recovered from a life-altering injury and
 suddenly finds he can't see.

I'll throw my two cents in.

Emotional appeals just won't work. For developers, for companies, it's
 all
about the money, about the glitz, the gloss, the numbers. They won't
 write
games for niche markets, and since the needs of the disabled community
 are
scattered, with different accommodations required for blind, deaf, and
paraplegic users, they won't be able to round us up into a significant
enough market to make their corporate sponsors care.

Developing to targeted audiences also does take time, not just in coding,
but in testing as well. We have to make that worthwhile, and an
 emotional
appeal won't do that. To suggest that it will come easily trivializes
 the
 programming effort involved.

Besides, developers reading that article might fleetingly be affected by
 the
prose, but they'll forget it tomorrow. Most of us, whoever we are, don't
think about what could happen tomorrow. We don't dwell on the
 possibilities
that were outlined. We keep going until it happens, and then we try to
cope. That's just the human way.

 Just my two cents.

 Lora

I am not impressed by the article. It does appeal on emotional level
and that is not what concerns the developers. It is simply cold, hard,
 cash.
We need to present our case for more accessible games from that
perspective.
That will be the only way to get their attention.

 Hi all,
I'm seeing a lot of posts on this list about possible bugs and problems
with sarah, as well as questions that can easily be answered by doing
 the following.
Get ahold of the nearest lending library, just a regular town library is
fine. Ask them if they're willing to order in the Harry Potter
books on tape for you The ones read by Jim Dale or Stephen Fry are both
the full book, you don't miss anything.. Read those books, all 6 of
them if you can. Since the Sarah game is based on the Harry Potter
series, as it says plainly on pcs games, people should probably have
read those books. To give you an example: I just saw a message about a
 dementor.
 s
 p
 o
 i
 l
 e
 r
just in case. If it comes out of a cabinet, it's not actually a
dementor. It's something mentioned in the third book, a bogart. Harry,
and obviously Sarah, have a fear of dementors, allowing the creature to
turn into one. Dementors are much harder to get rid of, being the real
thing, and the person would've known this had they read the books. So
 please, do so.

I'm not trying to be rude, offend anyone or lay blame or anything. I'm
just pointing out that the game will go so much easier for you if you
get ahold of the harry potter books. I'm sure bookshare has them, or
whatever braille or accessible material library you have in your
 country.

If anyone wishes to comment on my rudeness, lack of respect, stupid
message or whatever, please take it offlist so that I can easily pipe it
  into /dev/nul

 Thanks
 Brandon

Re: [Audyssey] a huge, huge bug in sarah!!!

2007-03-31 Thread Sky Taylor Mundell
Hi Nicol, The difference between the dementor on the easy and hard
difficulties is after you scare him away, if you re-open the cavanet he will
come back. same is the hard level, but you get to see the dementor in the
basement, which is before opening the cavanet. What actually is happening,
is when you open up the cavinet, the dementor is teleported into the
staffroom from nowhere.

 Hi phil
There's a huge, huge, huge bug in sarah that must be squashed! The
dementor is in the staffroom and he's not suppose to show up in easy and
 standard difficulty.
 Begin quote
 ++11.2  Dementors
Watch out for them because they can take all your magical energy away with
 a
kiss! The Patronus Charm will chase one away and it will not come back,
 at
least on the current floor of the castle.
You can detect them by their long, slow, rattling breaths.
By a wonderful quirk of fate, they do not show up when playing on the easy
 or standard difficulty settings.
 End quote
So phil's intention is that the dementor only shows up in the hard
difficulty so there's definitely a bug.

 Then
if I take the other entrance the only room I can find is a classroom,

Agreed. However, I personally do not like reviews of a new game which give
away spoilers. When I did the sod and gtc walkthroughs, it was because the
games had been out for a very long time. I hope that if a Sarah one is
 done,
it will be as a review and not as a walkthrough.

In the Transfiguration Office I picked up crate of Weasleys' Wildfire
Whizbangs, but when I select it from the inventory I hear the crate open
and then the game sort of locks up. Are they only supposed to work when
creatures are around? Also, I found a vanishing cabinet in a classroom and
used it. It took me to a room with a creature that keeps saying Stand
back, but there doesn't seem to be anything to do with it yet. I've tried
all the passwords and nothing works. I could use some help. Thanks.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] USA Games and SAPI support?

 Hello Tom.

currently, I'm being forced to use Ms sam in games. Even though I use the
orphius voice Alan with Hal, for some odd reason I have severe trouble
trying to make any alterations to Sapi, - either using the Orphius
 Sapi
runtime libraries, or trying to install the other Ms voices (though I am
looking into buying Realspeak Daniel soon, which will hopefully work).

The point is that at the moment, I'm not experiencing the best in synth
voice quality when it comes to games.

I find though, i can generally cope with Ms Sam as long as the information
I'm getting is of a fairly general nature, such as reading numbers or
 other
 status information.

I do find however, that a game (or indeed a text), loses a lot of it's
atmospheric content when dialogue or other speeches requiring emotion or
characterization are read in an emotionless synthetic voice, and
 obviously
the worse the voice, the worse the problem, though for in game character
speech, even something like Realspeak would be inadequate Imho.

I know that Phil got Sarah voice acted just for this reason.

To give an example, I have no problem with most of the Sapi used in Lone
wolf, even with ms Sam, however in the next version it might improve
the atmosphere of the game considerably if a few phrases, supposedly
 spoken
by the sub's crew, were actually recorded in Wav. these could include
torpedo's away! she's hit! (obviously having the crew speak the names
 of
enemy craft wouldn't be practical), and the various damage reports.

I can appreciate the difficulties in recording many wavs, and also that
would make things more difficult for people with slower internet
 connections
to download the game, however on the other hand, I do feel that the use of
synth voices for characterization in games can be extremely harmful to the
game' atmosphere, and (where applicable), how believeable those characters
 are.

so for Monti, I'd personally go for having your health, score, current
 level
and other status info spoken buy Sapi, but if ever panama Jo (or whoever
we've got starring in the game at the moment), has to do any talking, have
it recorded by a real live voice actor.

I will admit, as somebody who does fairly major stuff on stage, I am
probably fairly exacting as far as the acting side of gaming goes.

Btw, If the character's in the game are robots, as in Galaxy ranger, I
 think
a synth voice can actually fit in rather well. It's actually been done in
various films and Tv series I think, Tron, Space above and beyond and war
 games for example.

Well that's my thoughts on the subject, though everyone else's might be
 different.

 All the best

 Dark.

I haven't been reading the games list because I've been sooo busy with
other
things, but today I read some of the messages, and am I understanding it
right that Sarah has been released? I went to www.pcsgames.net and saw
something about it, but I couldn't find any info on where to download it,
 or
how to purchase it. I'd really love to buy this game if it is indeed been
released so any info would be appreciated.

I will be creating another sneak preview soon but probably not on the demo

Its sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry developed by phil
 vlaseck from pcs games.
The game has not yet been released. Phil put up a file on his site long
 ago,
it was a sneek preview of the divination classroom on floor7.
He will let everyone know when the game is available.
Hay phil btw why did you choose the divination classroom for the sneek
preview? It would be interesting if you could do a sneek preview of
 sarah
on the ground floor scaring a ghost.
 Just my thought.

 Hi Ken,
That is a perfect example of what does and does not work for encryption.
BSC's games like Troopenum seam to be using an encrypted file packing
utility like Molebox. I don't know of anyone who cracked in to it which
 is good.
GMA Games sound encryption isn't all that advanced. In fact I am not
sure they are encrypted. They appear to be some raw sound source which
gets loaded in to the SOD engine and reconstructed at runtime.
All you are doing with Soundforge or Goldwave is reconstructing the
 sounds from that raw state.
A C++ programmer does have the advantage of packing all sounds in to a
dll, but there are tools out there that can pick icons and sounds out of
 compiled dlls.
I have heard one of the ways to secure sounds is to include them
directly in to your exe file, and then use a binary encryption tool to
scramble the exe file so it can not be decompiled and other hacking
tools can not steel the sounds or images from it. Down side as with
Molebox you have a file several hundred megs large or at least 20 or 30
MB, or whatever size it ends up being.

Agreed. The Blade of the Fox would really kick the tarn ratts in to next
week. I don't remember what exactly I was carrying the last time I took
them on in my last adventure, but I had no trouble clearing the barn of
tarn ratts. I cleaned their clock and then some.
It would be really funny if someone saved that mission until they
obtained the Hale blade and then took them on. I'd say one roll of

[Audyssey] TechnoShock

2007-01-28 Thread Sky Taylor Mundell
Hello folks, I just went through the room in level 4 with the fireballs, and
came across 2 pits, and a switch. However, if I jump one of the pits I fall
down one of the pits and lose my life and return to story 1. Any ideas on how
to jump all the pits without being killed?

[Audyssey] Techno Shock

2007-01-27 Thread Sky Taylor Mundell
Hey list, I have decided to return to level 1, after playing with techno Shock
for a while. Now, I am back on story 3, but I can't seem to get the elivator to
open. I have collected all the keys, and the items, so, why isn't the elivator
opening when I have the key? I have the yellow, blue, and red keys. Thanks, Sky

Hey Karl, I went through level3 in the rooms, but the door that requires
the trap key tells me that I must have it in order to go through it. I can't
seem to find the accessible room with the yellow key in it. Thanks, Sky.

 Hi,

You do not want to pick up that key, it is a trap which will make your
life much more difficult. You are missing a key in one of the
accessible rooms. Once you have it, cross the pit and go through the
 door on the other side.
 Karl
 Original message:
ok I have explored all rooms as I can in story 3, but no matter what I
 do, I
still can't pick up the key.
I have came at from all angles, and it just won't grab it for me.
I went across the pit and killed the machine gun toating bot, no problems
there and got all med kits from both rooms.
so I'm either going crazy or there is a bug in my version.

Unfortunatley I doubt the game will ever be finished (unless there's
something I missed,) last I heard the game was abandonware. Did Jason
 decide
to pick it back up? Or are we stuck with an incomplete, rather too
challenging in my opinion, and buggy beta? Anyone have any idea?

 Subject: [Audyssey] Danger City Keys

 Hello,
For those of you who don't know, I've done some experimentation and
 I've
figured out pretty much all of the keys, at least I think I have. Here
they are. Sorry if someone's already done this.
Left and right arrow keys: Move left and right. If standing still,
 simply
spins your guy the other direction.
Up arrow: Jump. Rapidly pressing either left or right when in the air
makes you jump faster and farther, though I think you can jump and
 hold
the arrow down. Also note, you have to be facing the way you want to
 jump
before you can jump in that direction. For example, your guy doesn't
 spin
in the air so if you wanted to jump right and you were facing left,
 you'd
have to tap right to turn around, then jump right.
Space Bar: Punch. Also counts as action button for beating acts, ETC.
Tab: Brings up your inventory. Allows you to equip weapons, repair
 weapons
and so on using items, Obviously.
I: Announces your current points for that level and then your current
 score.
 H: Announces health.
 L: Announces lives.
R: Brings up a dialogue of unknown purposes. Might have to investigate
further to find out what this is.
Control: Screen clear. I assume you get a limited number of these, but
 it
instantly kills all enemies on the screen.

I might have missed a couple, but those are the ones I can remember. I
haven't found a weapon status key of any kind either, so you pretty
 much
have to guess when to use your weapon repair kits. Also, Act III has
 to
 be
freakin impossible, the pits or whatever they are aren't spaced far
 enough
apart to keep track of, and the sound they make is entirely too lou.
 Any
comments on this? Hope my key listing helps, for those of you who
 haven't
 figured it out.

for quite a long time.

 hello,
My name is Aaron, I am 14 years old, and am a totally blind gamer.
I started playing video games since 4 and ever since then, have basicly
been hooked. I play console games such as Tekken, Soul Calibur II (have
not played III yet though), urban reign, the mortal kombat series, and
others. i was introduced to accessible games in, i think, 2003.
and now for my question. in the audyssey magazine and on the list
archives, i found topics about the text rpg game legends. i have not
been able to find this game. no urls work. it's not on the interactive
fiction archive. it does not seem to be on the internet at all.
I think i will enjoy my time here.
 regards,
 Aaron.
