When I created the tutorial for Blindfold Racer, I was really confused why
blind teens had no problem understanding the tutorial, and sighted adults would
get confused.
I added more pauses ("tap the screen to continue") between each tutorial
instruction, or more tried rephrasing the sentence, but they just didn't
understand. Then an auditory therapist explained to me how adults lose their
ability to listen and comprehend without seeing something to reinforce what
they are learning. Blind people can't rely on their sight, so their auditory
attention skills are far superior.
Blind people develop their auditory cortex in lieu of using their visual cortex.
I learned the true extent of this when I collaborated with a blind gamer to
build a Blindfold Sudoku game. If you are unfamiliar with Sudoku, the basic
idea is that you must fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column and each
row contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 with no duplicates.
When I play Sudoku, I need to see the entire puzzle to solve it. Blindfold
Sudoku tells you what number is in each cell, or row, or column and from that,
you must create the image in your head. Blind gamers are able to do this; very
few sighted people can.
My blog follows the development of the game, and other apps that we’re building
that don’t require using your eyes. It’s a different way of perceiving the
world, and it’s amazing what you can learn.

[Audyssey] Blindfold Racer: A very, very, very big iPhone
10 times larger than an iPhone 6s == When the iPhone 6S came out, people were talking about how big the screen was, and how much more you could do on the phone with such a big screen. Larger screens means that games can display a bigger environment, and they would be more fun. Having designed audio games for the past year or so, these new screens are tiny compared to the image you can maintain in your brain. I stumbled onto this idea when I was building the cryptogram game. When I design an audio game, I first design the screen, so that I can see how the game operates. For example, with the Sudoku game on a 9x9 board, I create a board on the iPhone screen, and the start programming the game. The position for row 1, column 1, is in the upper left corner of the phone, and the position for row 9, column 9 is in the lower right corner of the phone. When the audio game is completed, and all the blind gamers that have tested the game say the game is ready for the App Store, I modify the app to make the screen dark. That way sighted gamers playing the game have no advantage over blind gamers. When a blind gamer plays, she flicks her finger right or left, up or down, to move around within the puzzle. The screen could be one inch by one inch, and the flicking would still work. The screen could be 1 foot by 1 foot, and her flicking would still work. Screen size is completely irrelevant. When a game designer builds an audio game, the playing field is your brain - not the screen. That gives the game designer an infinite space to layout the game. In a visual game, the screen is a tiny window into a virtual world, and the gamer must move the window to play the game. In an audio game, you are in the virtual reality of the game, and not restricted by a tiny window. Your ears tell you what the virtual world looks like, and you use your body - your hands, your arms, which way you are facing- to move within this world. How does a blind person drive with their ears? == Almost every game in the App Store is a video game – you watch the screen and press buttons. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Our first game, Blindfold Racer is an audio game – you play be listening to the road, and hold your iPhone like a steering wheel. And you hear music in your ears. Turn the phone to the right, you go right. Rotate to the left, you go left. When you get too close to the left side of the road, the music in your left ear gets louder. Likewise for the right side of the road. When the music is in the center of your head, you are in the middle of the road. Blindfold Racer is a multi-level game: each time you complete a level – a track – you move to the next, slightly harder level. Blind people complete first 5 levels fairly quickly, and like to play the game for hours. Sighted people have a much harder time – most need to close their eyes while playing. As one blind teen girl said to me while she was at level 12: “I can’t wait to play against my sighted friends. [Audyssey] Blindfold racer a problem
Well I've finally tried this one out. I rather like the mix of music and the idea behind the game, though I do wish you could skip some of the voice sequences sinse while I understand the game was aimed at kids having to be constantly told in a very breezy tone "you didn't hit any animals" was getting a bit irritating when I wanted to see the next level. on the other hand I love the mix of music in the game used as indicators, (nice to drive along to everything from Baroque classical guitar to string quartet, and electronica, that definitely suits my own eclectic taste). The one major problem I'm having however is controlling the dam car and I suspect this is due to how I'm holding the Iphone sinse the instructions I didn't particularly find specific on how to hold the thing. I tried holding the phone perpendicula to the floor as usual and then rotating my hands downwards, so that the angle of the phone as compared to the floor and ceiling increased as I turned, that did nothing, I then tried rotating my hands on the horizontal plane, keeping the phone screen upwards but rotating so that the home button on the right moved towards or away from me, like rotating a disk, that didn't seem to work either. The only way I could get the dam rotation to work was holding the phone on edge at 90 degrees with the screen facing me and rotating like a real steering wheel in a car. the problem however is that though this works fine some of the time, at other points (I suspect when the phone isn't exactly in the right position), for some weerd reason the controls would not work at all and my car would just helplessly roll on in one direction and boing off fences! :D. That is why my scores on levels range from absolutely perfect, to a zero (or at least as close to zero as you seem to be able to get in the game. I hope my explanation of what I tried here makes sense. I suspect I'm doing something wrong with holding tthe thing, I admit spacial coordination is not my strong point, so I'd appreciate knowing exactly how I should be holding and rotating the phone sinse the tutorial just said "have the home button on the right and rotate" which didn't particularly help much given I've not played any rotational games before. I also would love to see this game updated to work with the gyroscope the way papasangre2 didd, sinse physically turning my body to steer the car (or even better using my swivvle chair), would be rather good fun and also make considderably more sense to me. I didn't pay anything for it. I played enough to unlock all the levels. It clearly states that it's for kids. (It's rated 4+). So since it was free, I tried it out and had a bit of fun with it. If it hadn't been mentioned previously, this game is for iDevices. It's more like driving an obstacle course by sound than an actual racing game. It's not really about racing. It's more about an obstacle course with curvy roads that have animals, walls (that's what the jetpack is for), etc. There are no car noises; just music when you're driving. I really like the variety of music he put in there. everything from surf to Javanese gamalon to classical. It's really cute. I think it's a girl narrating who sounds like she's about twelve or thirteen. I think there was a school for the blind in Miami that took part in creating it. Teresa Visualize whirled peas.
