thirty. I believe a few people have ground to be able to beat him but it's
my understanding the story proceeds the same regardless. But then that's
often how it is even in mainstream games when you have a boss you're
expected to lose to for story purposes. Sometimes they have a hidden,
overpowered reward but that isn't the case here.

Having progressed beyond that part I can say that it seems the shadow master
is a task for much further into the game, however, I'm also curious. Suppose
that you were to painstakingly to level up you party and succeed in
defeating his fourth manamon, rather than getting captured and having to
complete the tunnels part, is that even possible, and would the story then
take another branch?

You are only allow to carry six manamon at one time.
To change your party you have to go to one of the hotels.
When you get to one of the hotels go to the transportle to retrieve your 
manamons.

I always go in circles...
Also, how and where do I change manamons? I have more than 6 but only 6 are 
getting shown. I once found a teleport or something like that, but I forgot 
where it is...
