Re: [Audyssey] game file path

2013-05-21 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

I now have the VB6 code to check to see if the kitchensinc folder in XP is at
C:\Documents and Settings\Jim kitchen\My Documents\kitchensinc. If it does not
exist, it makes the kitchensinc folder and can write the game files to that
path. I am hoping of course that the code does find the My Documents path in
Windows Vista, 7 and 8. Guess that it is supposed to.

I personally have never used My Documents, but it might be easier for people to
find the files there in the kitchensinc folder.

Hi Shaun,

Truthfully I was not looking for sympathy. My Accent synthesizer served me
well for about a dozen years. And now the Triple Talk has been running for
close to that. I do still like the Triple Talk, but the Accent was so
mechanical sounding that I do like Eloquence a bit better. But I especially
for games, do like having the totally different and great sounding sapi5
voices. And over all I am very happy with my old but running fine XP computers.

You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

Hi Phil,

I do believe that is what the code is designed to do. You know just like the

Of course that is a problem of coding for a system that you do not have.

I probably need people to test this little program just to see if it works on

Hi Jim,

That's a good idea. I've thought about writing my own saved games etc
to My Documents as well as they will be easier to find, edit, and/or
delete if someone removes the game.

Anyway, as long as you get the right environment variable it should
work regardless of what OS the person is running. The registry handles
the location of all personal folders regardless if it is something
like
c:\Documents Settings\Jim\My Documents
or something like
c:\Users\Thomas\My Documents
on Windows Vista and later.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game file path

2013-05-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

You are absolutely right. Running XP in a virtual machine isn't the
same is running it on a PC natively. There is going to be a bit of a
performance hit no matter what you do just because it is running
inside a piece of software like VMWare Player on top of say Windows 7,
and some updates in service pack 3, for whatever reason, seems to
aggravate the situation by slowing the virtual machine down.

Still, over all, I agree with your point about upgrades in general. If
it weren't running in a virtual machine I'd probably put service pack
3 on their for the security fixes, bug fixes, and of course to get
updates like Internet Explorer 8, Windows Media Player 11, and a few
other updates that require service pack 3 to run. I generally upgrade
when and where possible unless there is a specific reason not to do so
such as this case where service pack 3 slows my virtual machine down,
and since I am only playing older Dos and Windows games in the virtual
machine anyway a lot of the updates in service pack 3 don't really
apply to what I'm doing in the virtual machine in the first place. So
I can forgo the updates in that particular instance.

Cheers!

Hi Thomas,

Yes, when I bought my game development computer I was still running a dos
computer for Email and the Internet. Then when it went bad I bought a new
Windows computer to do Email and the Internet on.

My game development computer also has an external USB Triple Talk hardware
synthesizer. It frees up the system resources that Eloquence would take.
Which is probably good when working in the VB6 IDE. Even though I have worked
in VB6 on the Internet computer with Eloquence. But heck I still have an
Accent stand alone hardware synthesizer. It just is not as responsive with JFW
as it was with JFD.

I guess the hard thing is knowing if the newest really might be the best, or if
it is just hype from the company trying to sell it. Interesting though that
you found out that the third service pack for your virtual XP really was not
good.

I have not yet worked with the SHGetFolderPath function. I plan to see if I
can get it all working though.

Re: [Audyssey] game file path

2013-05-20 Thread shaun everiss

Well I do sympathise with you.
howeverthings are changing.
I used to have a couple synths a keynote external and a dectalk which
never ran right with xp at all.
Ofcause its a bit mute now, my systems well most of the newer ones I
have don't even have a serial port.
The later systems I have both desktop and laptop a like don't even
have a modem or moniter port.
its all usb 2 3 and hdmi now with wired and wireless broadband
connecters so unless you get a card or adaptor or something your
serial device may be no go.
Not to mention that some try to access ports directly which guess
what windows really gets cranky about.
Firstly its secured against direct access and second more often than
not it really doesn't connect to any physical ports these days unless
forced to its all vertual.
in the case with my dectalk express, the system tried to go through
sam and tried to directly interface with the hardware which windows
would not let it.
in the best case it would work but not run right speaking it through
the soundcard in a weird language and at worst windows would detect
something was trying to mess with its port and lock me out of starting the box.

The only way to fix it was to reformat.
After trying this at least 20 times and having to reformat almost
every time I surmised this was probably something to that effect and
stopped trying.

Ofcause it ended up not mattering as both synths broke and ports went away.
I have always said I'd get an external synth but with all the junk
thats going round with all the space and devices I have I've never
got round to it.

my first nettable system was in 1996 when I got my first pcmcia card modem.
Before I had dos but it was not for much at all.

well I have a 4gb box with win7 32 bit right now.
so if I give something like 1.5 to say an xp vm then it should be ok,
xp has run on 512 mb its a joke but it runs.

I have xp running on 1 gb this current box does 2gb ram but 1.5 is probably ok.

I can see some updates of xp not being very fast in a VM. You have
to remember that when running a VM the original op along with the VM

this it is possible to see conflicts in operation on the VM.
However, running that op as a stand alone op on the box will not run
the same as it does in a VM. upgrades not only fixes bugs and holes.
But also replace bad code with good code and if not left to get
these upgrades can make very many bugs to deal with on latter ops.
There is a reason you can not buy VB6 anymore and that is because
they have made it better. I would also state that it is probably not
able to be installed on win7 and up for dropped dependency and libs.
which would make it less likely to be used. Moving up may be ruff,

Re: [Audyssey] game file path

2013-05-19 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Actually, I didn't know your development computer has never been
connected to the Internet, but that would drastically change the
necessity to update and how often. Most of the Windows updates are
security fixes and patches for security holes found by crackers and
viruses. Without that constant risk of being infected or attacked by a
determined cracker I'd imagine the system would run pretty smooth as
long as it was kept in optimal running condition which it sounds like
you've done.

There is some truth to the saying sometimes newer is not better. I
know when I am running XP in a virtual machine putting service packs
1 and 2 on improves performance, but the minute I put service pack 3
on the system it runs terrible. It is for that reason I've got an XP
virtual machine I use for running all my older Dos and Windows games,
but I absolutely refuse to put service pack 3 and any later updates on
my XP virtual machines because the virtual machine runs like crap.
However, since the virtual machine isn't used for the Internet etc,
just for playing games and such, I don't need all those extra patches,
security updates, etc.. :D

FYI, it looks as though the function you use to get the App Data
folder is the SHGetFolderPath function found in older versions of
Shell32.dll and SHGetKnownFolderPath on Vista and later.

Cheers!

Yeah, I don't know if Internet Explorer 7 or 8 will work with a

for the Jaws issue.

Hi Jim,

I doubt it. I suppose anything is possible but we are talking a
website which should be compatible with any browser. Even if you are
running Internet Explorer 6 it should load most web pages.

Cheers!

Yes, I am sure that I got the entire link. Most likely my old version of
 Internet Explorer is the problem.

 Thanks again.

Seems you got a problem with explorer, because it worked just fine
for me. You sure you got all the link, because it does use 2 lines?

Thank you, but when I pasted the link into Internet Explorer it came

Hi Jim,

Well, that's not quite the way to go about it. I did a quick Google
search, and found a decent article which discusses why you shouldn't
write to your program folder and then tells you have to save to your
user application data folders with code examples. Try this link

Where should I store my files that my program uses/creates?
http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?564256-Classic-VB-Where-should-I-store-the-files-that-my-program-uses-creates

As stated this article explains how to do this properly for XP, Vista,
Windows 7, and Windows 8 and gives some code examples. Hope this
helps. :D

Open c:\kit.bat For Output As #1
Print #1, cd %appdata%
Close #1
Shell c:\kit.bat, 3

So if I am allowed to write that first bat file, g$ would now have the

Hi Thomas,

Yeah, I don't know. My I E 6 does still work for most web sites, but not all.
But Phil was kind enough to send me the article. So I'm good to go now.

Using xp you can move up to IE8 with same function as IE6 or 7. Its
only IE9 and 10 that change how some things are done, but xp won't go
that high. IE8 is last upgrade for xp.
