[Audyssey] topspeed3 query

2011-11-18 Thread joseph weakland
hello all if anyone loves topspeed3 and loves to race please email me off
list because sometimes I host a topspeed3 server. If anyone wants to be
added to my racing group let me know off list and i'll do so. Also do you
know if there is any new custom tracks made by other users or custom
vehicles you can get? if so how would you get them?

Hi jeramy,

People on here tend to put out the simple simple games all the time which
gets boring. Keep up your individuality! Different games like castaways or
even bigger games like we discussed over private email ages ago would be
more than welcomed I think

While I wish it wasn't true, I haven't been around long enough to see the
same patterns as you have. It does make sense though, that if most of the
developers are new to making games they would settle with the simpler space
invader approach, regardless of what other ideas were floating around. This
is very unfortunate.

I may adjust my strategy a bit.

Hi Aprone.

I fully agree on the matter of braille displays etc,
pricing is insane, just add the word accessibility and you
can pretty much stick on another zero, heck I've seen a hand
held device which does just what your colour recognition
program does which would set you back 150 pounds (about 270
dollars I think). So I fully agree with the developement
your doing there.

With games though, I'm afraid I'm not sure whether your
methodology here sutes the circumstances.

For a start, there are actually very few professional
standard programmers making audio games, in fact you could
probably count them without taking off your socks. Subtract
those like Justin from bsc and Liam urven who's life
circumstances aren't conducive to making games, and your
left with a very small group of people indeed.

This bunch are rather independent all have their own ideas
and styles, all have knolidge of what they want to make, and
won't do something simply because there is a community idea
out there.

to illustrate, look at stratogy games.

Vip gameszone came up with galaxy ranger, which is sort of
an action stratogy hybrid in I believe 2003, yet we didn't
see another even vaguely stratogy audio game (not counting
battleships), until 2007 with sound rts. Sound rts was
amazingly well recieved and enjoyed by many people and you
would've expected a huge wave of that style of game, yet
(not counting castaways), the only thing to follow was time
of conflict from Gma, which I'm pretty sure was in
developement when sound rts was released anyway.

This isn't to say there aren't trends in audio games, only
that they have far less impact, sinse the more complex the
game type and genre, the more difficult producing games with
that concept and idea is, and the fewer people will attempt
it, if indeed anyone will at all!

Look at entombed. possibly the most successful audio game
of all time, and produced in less than two years. Yet have
we seen any similar rpgs? heck no!

While I agree we have had many arcade games, I don't think
this is entirely the fault of fashion.

As Philip's example games show, left right sterrio
targiting is sort of the default baseline in audio games,
one reason why there are so many example and practice games
like that now, especially from those who are working with
bgt for the first time, which is indeed why it's only been
now that we've had to introduce the database submission
guidelines for audiogames.net to say what counts as a game
and what counts as a programming practice.

I think therefore that the reason there are so many arcade
games is as much a consequence of programming skill, than
deliberate choice, indeed there has been a major desire for
more complex audio games right from when i first started
playing them myself in 2006.

Thus, I'm afraid your approach of introducing concept demos
and then hoping people will pick up the idea and run with it
just doesn't seem as logical to me given the circumstances,
and given that so many people (including me), really! want
more complex and interesting audio games to play, in one
sense it actually feels a litle dissatisfying.

Personally, I'd say there are two ways you could change the
situation. One of them, is as Jason Alan did with entombed,
write a complex game yourself and thus contribute something
to posterity with audio games, which might not change the
face of what people develope, but is certainly one! example
out there of a complex game.
The second, is to acknolidge that your writing a concept
demo in an example

There's not much against continuing to use the old, three-column

2011-01-13 Thread Davy Kager

Damien,

Regarding your Utility Pack, I think Leonard can answer that question better
than I. Regarding your tracks and vehicles, though... I'd like to include
them in my yet to be made repository, so that Top Speed and its tracks and
vehicles can be downloaded from one and the same place. This repository
will probably be not much more than a directory listing, but it should
suffice for the time being. Please let me know if you have any problems
with this idea. Also, if any of the original track and vehicle authors are
on this list and have anything against me copying their material, I'd be
glad to know about it. ;-)

Hey,
If anyone is still interested in the old Top Speed 2 Utility, I can update
it to work with Top Speed 3. I'm puzzled as to why it was removed in the
first place.
Also, I am willing to convert all the cars and tracks that I am currently
hosting to the new Top Speed 3 format so that they may continue to be used
as before.

Email me if interested.
Thanks.

although the tracks work, we really need a track/ vehicle converter.
There's not much against continuing to use the old, three-column syntax
for tracks. In fact, it'll speed up loading multi-player games. As for
the vehicle files, for most of them a simple Find Replace will do the
trick. Replacing car with builtin leaves only the motorcycles to be
fixed. Replacing cycle1 with builtin10, cycle2 with builtin11,
and cycle3 with builtin3 fixes that.

who's game to try to rewrite all those files, especially since they are

I plan on setting up a temporary repository of tracks and vehicles,

Hey,
If anyone is still interested in the old Top Speed 2 Utility, I
can update it to work with Top Speed 3. I'm puzzled as to why it
was removed in the first place.
Also, I am willing to convert all the cars and tracks that I am
currently hosting to the new Top Speed 3 format so that they may
continue to be used as before.

Email me if interested.
Thanks.

although the tracks work, we really need a track/ vehicle converter.
There's not much against continuing to use the old,
three-column syntax for tracks. In fact, it'll speed up loading
multi-player games. As for the vehicle files, for most of them
a simple Find Replace will do the trick. Replacing car with
builtin leaves only the motorcycles to be fixed. Replacing
cycle1 with builtin10, cycle2 with builtin11, and
cycle3 with builtin3 fixes that.

I plan on setting up a temporary repository of tracks and

Re: [Audyssey] topspeed3 impressions

2011-01-13 Thread Jorge Gonçalves

Hi friends.
I was trying the game since yesterday and my impressions are very positive.
The game play is much realistic and fun.
It's really now closer to the efects of a good racing game.
And the new weather conditions and surfaces are very very cool.
I just have one comment:
I think it's approaching to something that would be my dream which is a
racing game with a season mode with points system for example knowing
that there are 7 computer controled players, it would be fun to make a
season going through a lot of tracks and giving points according to the
position in the race for example, 10 for the winner, 8 for the second, 6
for the third etc.
And the funniest would be that we could edit the names of other players
so like that the developpers wouldn't have to worry about that.
It would be fun to have a season mode, with random weather conditions
for each race so we would have to compit in difrent circustances in the
run for title of Top Speed champion.
Maybe it's only a dream but there are a lot of main stream games like
that with a season mode: it would be fun to have one like that for us!
But out of that, i think that the game play is much much better and
thank you very much to those who developed this game!

Cheers,
Jorge

Hi.
ok some of the options crash the game.
Things like some of the new options the first 2 crash the games
next.
although the tracks work, we really need a track/ vehicle converter.
The vehicles don't and well we need a converter there are at
least 100 tracks and vehicles.
who's game to try to rewrite all those files, especially since
they are or need to be rehosted somewhere again anyway.

Someone should be able to make a converter, I can't program else I would.

Hi,
The thing I miss the most is the voiceovers; some how I do prefer those in
TS2.

Best Regards,
Hayden

Cheers,
Jorge

 Damien,

Regarding your Utility Pack, I think Leonard can answer that question
 better
than I. Regarding your tracks and vehicles, though... I'd like to
 include
them in my yet to be made repository, so that Top Speed and its tracks
and

vehicles can be downloaded from one and the same place. This repository
will probably be not much more than a directory listing, but it should
suffice for the time being. Please let me know if you have any problems
with this idea. Also, if any of the original track and vehicle authors
 are
on this list and have anything against me copying their material, I'd be
glad to know about it. ;-)

 Hey,
If anyone is still interested in the old Top Speed 2 Utility, I can
 update
it to work with Top Speed 3. I'm puzzled as to why it was removed in the

 first place.
Also, I am willing to convert all the cars and tracks that I am
 currently
hosting to the new Top Speed 3 format so that they may continue to be
 used
 as before.
 Email me if interested.
 Thanks.
 Regards,
 Damien.

 Hello!

Things like some of the new options the first 2 crash the games
   Which ones, please?

although the tracks work, we really need a track/ vehicle converter.
There's not much against continuing to use the old, three-column
 syntax
for tracks. In fact, it'll speed up loading multi-player games. As
 for
the vehicle files, for most of them a simple Find Replace will do the

trick. Replacing car with builtin leaves only the motorcycles to be

 fixed. Replacing cycle1 with builtin10, cycle2 with builtin11,
and cycle3 with builtin3 fixes that.

who's game to try to rewrite all those files, especially since they
 are
or need to be rehosted somewhere again anyway.
I plan on setting up a temporary repository of tracks and vehicles,
until a decent community site gets built. Please mail me at
da...@playinginthedark.net if you have any really great tracks or
vehicles that I should be including.
