Hi,

Not sure about Second Life specifically, but generally I've had good
results playing internet based games like Sryth in Safari on the Mac and
with Firefox in Linux. So you might want to give it a try. The only way
to know for sure to is to do it.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] accessible games for the Mac and voice over?

2012-05-03 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Ben,

Not only that, but the majority of mainstream games ported to Mac
usually are run through a game emulator like Cider which provides
commercial game devs with an easy way to port games from Windows to Mac.
However, we all know how unsuccessful screen readers have been in
accessing onscreen information with free emulators like Dosbox, Wine,
etc and I don't see commercial emulators like Cider or Cediga being any
different since they are essentually commercial versions of Wine with
commercial libraries for running games on Mac, Linux, and so on. There
really is no way to access information from a game being emulated even
if all it is showing is straight text with no graphics let alone a
highly graphical 3d game etc.

Cheers!

2012-05-03 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Laurel,

Well, the only way to know for sure is to buy them and try them, but I
can say 99% of the time they won't be accessible. Not only do you have
to worry about the fact that things like the menus etc won't talk most
of the games out there for Mac are emulated. That is that they are run
through a specific Windows game emulator like Cider which doesn't
communicate onscreen information to VoiceOver. This pretty much insures
the fact that even if the display was presenting straight text you
couldn't read it with VoiceOver because Cider like all emulators doesn't
expose the onscreen information to the accessibility APIs.

Plus keep in mind mainstream gaming is highly graphical in the first
place. Most first person, third person, and strategy games are
inaccessible because they require sighted assistance in aiming weapons,
moving around the game world, and so on. So you are pretty much out of
luck if you are thinking of going down the mainstream gaming route.

Yes if you go to www.audiogames.net you will find some games for the Mac.
Yes there are a couple of main stream games that are accessible for the
blind, one of the games is call Dragon Age Origins, and I believe that
there is a Star Wars game that is accessible aswell.
I myself is trying to find more games for the Mac so I can switch
