g_b 'the sin not named not named...'

2005-10-10 Thread Tqcdo

http://www.glbtq.com/social-sciences/africa_pre.html

Hi

The above is a link (I hope. I am computer-dodgy) to glbt which you
probably all know about being far more familiar with computers than I. But
having only recently joined GB, please forgive me, if you do. www.glbtq,com is an excellentsite
dealing with literature and the arts (homosexual and lesbian) and for that
reason I subscribe to it. However, their last email drew my attention
tohomosexuality in Africa.

This article seems to compliment therecent email with the extract
from "Tritiya-Prakriti: People of the Third Sex" which I found
fascinating.

I quote only the concluding paragraph from glbtq.
a: Sub-Saharan,
Pre-Independence
Conclusion
With reports from hundreds of sub-Saharan African locales of male-male sexual
relations and from about fifty of female-female sexual relations, it is clear
that same-sex sexual relations existed in traditional African societies, though
varying in forms and in the degree of public acceptance. Much of this same-sex
activity was situational or premarital, though there were long-term
relationships, too. The special Christian animus toward homosexuality was
carried to Africa by Europeans and stimulated denials that "the sin not named
among Christians" existed among "unspoiled" Africans.

It seems that the British
have a great deal to answer for. I can say that because I am English and
was brought up at a time when what I naturally felt was illegal, when homosexual
men where prosecuted and flung in goal and given psychiatric treatment.
Consequently almost all homosexual males then were pretend-heterosexuals. We
walked in the dark.

Best
wishes

commando

g_b from Dan Savage: was it rape?

2005-10-10 Thread Vikram
This is in response to the thread on this list about how to handle
people who feel you up in crowded train compartments. I'm not
expressing any personal opinions here, but here's an interesting
thread about a similar - though considerably more dramatic -
experience in Dan Savage's Savage love column.

First is the letter describing the experience and Dan's response.
Then the others of which the second last is particularly interesting
for the depressing light it seems to cast on the place of effeminate
queer men - the equivalent of kotis, I guess - in the US:

Q. I'm a 21-year-old straight guy with a boring, straight sex life.
Until a few months ago when something terrifying happened. I was
contacted by somebody through match.com. She claimed to be a grad
student at my school, and had a very attractive photo, and we began
IM'ing. She talked about how she was looking for a casual deal, and
she started going on and on about how much she loved giving head and
liked receiving anal. A bit kinkier than what I'm used to, I thought,
but it's match.com, that's safe, and she's a grad student at a good
school. Nothing to worry about.

So I agree—awful decision—to meet up. When I get to the bar, she
calls me and tells me to come to her friend's apartment instead. When
I get there, it's totally dark. She calls again and tells me not to
turn any lights on when I come in, just to get naked in the bed and
wait for her. I decide to leave, as I'm afraid I'm going to get
robbed or beaten up. She calls again and says we can meet at another
nearby bar. I wait at the bar for 10 minutes. Another phone call. She
tells me she can't come to a public place because she isn't
comfortable, but asks to give me oral sex. Another awful decision: I
go back to her friend's apartment and comply with her original
instructions. I don't turn on any lights, I get naked, I get in bed.
A slim person comes into the dark room, but there's a towel covering
her face and I don't get a look at her body. She starts going down on
me; it's awful and uncomfortable.

Then the horror. While I'm not paying attention to her—instead
concentrating so I can climax and get the hell out—this person gets
on top and inserts me into her. Unprotected. I suddenly realize I'm
feeling something I've never felt before: anal sex. I was inside for
maybe 30 seconds before I jumped out of the bed. She ran out. When
I turned on the lights and looked around it seemed clear that I was
in a man's apartment. I got out of the place in a hurry and didn't
look back. I should have called the police but didn't. I've been
living with a crippling fear of HIV. During the summer I got tested
three times—all negatives—but that only calms me down for a few days
until the panic sets in again. I told my best friend about this, and
he pushed me into therapy, and I've started seeing a psychiatrist.

Aside from continuing therapy and getting retested, how can I put my
life back together? Casual mentions of HIV/AIDS are enough to induce
an anxiety attack. I barely sleep at night. My (nonexclusive)
relationship with a girl I care about has been ruined. (Or: I ruined
it, no passives.) Do you think I have grounds to file an assault
charge? I certainly accept my part of the responsibility for this—it
was my horniness and carelessness that put me in a vulnerable
position, and I did give my consent to the oral sex. But I did not
give consent to have anal sex, and if it was a man I didn't consent
to any of it.

Shortly after this happened, I contacted the person again, asking if
she/he was clean. She/he responded by suggesting that we meet again.
Would it be a good idea to arrange another meeting? Obviously I
wouldn't put myself at further risk, but I could at least figure out
the person's gender—by force if I had to. —Scared and Seeking Advice

A. I'm printing SASA's letter in its entirety so that other young men
can learn from his mistakes. His bedrock fuckup—which, to SASA's
credit, he identifies himself—was letting his horniness get the
better of him. If SASA had been thinking with his head and not his
dick, he would have bailed on this woman early on in their deeply
creepy courtship. Had he paused to think, perhaps he would have
remembered the first rule of Internet personals—and everything else,
for that matter: If it sounds too good to be true,
it is. An attractive girl lurking on a personals site offering no-
strings-attached blowjobs and anal sex (but not vaginal intercourse)
to men she's never met? Not on planet Earth.

I don't mean to pour salt in your well-salted wounds, SASA. You know
you fucked up, and you know how. But I hope you take some comfort in
knowing that other young men won't fall for a similar con after
reading your story. And I would urge you to stop freaking out about
how long you've been freaking out about this. You did something so
colossally stupid, so monumentally idiotic, that I would be more

g_b How Can I Cope With the Miles between Us? (a gay poem)Do read, nice one!

2005-10-10 Thread RAJEEV
How Can I Cope With the Miles between Us?

You're a thousand miles away from here,
But in my heart I can still feel you're near.
Your touch and the smile you put on my face,
Gives me the feeling that I am safe.
I m always safe when I m around you,
Because every little thing you do,
Means more than you know.
How can I cope with the miles between us?

You took my hand and made me fly,
I could touch the clouds high up in the sky.
That’s how high you're love makes me go.
Now I just want you to know,
I treasure all the moments that we shared.
Each moment made me feel as if I was walking on air.
How can I cope with the miles between us?

No one can make me feel the way you can,
It's there in every touch of your hand.
The way the warmth in your touch makes me feel,
Makes me ask myself, if this is all real?
I wish you could hold me in your arms 'till day breaks
night,
Then you would still be there holding me tight.
How can I cope with the miles between us?
If you're not there, I don't know what to do,
Although, you know I’ll always be here for you.
So don't hesitate to give me a call.
'Cause you know I m gonna give you my all.

Sometimes I wish I could go back to the past.
Like turning over the sands of the hour glass.
Going back to when we first met.
Having you in my life is no regret.
I hope I can tell you soon,
Just how much I love you,
So tell me,
How can I cope with the miles between us?

Author:
Andrew Aquino
(Taken from the net)

The above poem is written by day to day guy one of us
and that the best part of it, its has an average
person's emotions and feeling, that we all can relate
to instead of something out of the league.
Please keep me posted with your opinion, suggestions
and ya, I guess complains as well.

g_b I Wonder ?

2005-10-10 Thread handsome_redfort
I've been chatting on net for the last 5 month... meet many guys on net.
Before i started out on internet I use to see this fuzzy dream that I
would meet the kind of guy I m looking for. Some one to put my head on
his sholder when I m feeling low and many other things which sound
quite soothing for a shy and introward guy like me.
I registered myself to the various dating sites. get responses too.
But I get only disappointment every time I talk to a new guy. Its all
start off with the good and nice words and comes to end with SEX. Is
the sex the only thing for a person to enter into friendship with ?
Why can't people see the world beyond sex beyond being physical lusty.
I m belonging to the community which lives under dark. I have many
issues to share. But no one cares. I guess may be I m expecting too
much good from the people. I believed in the story of peoples who love
each other without any conditions. May be its all hype in the stories
and nothing more then that.
I m fed up with the never ending search of this kind

As a TG who went to architecture school in Berkeley...I would say that you
should ask us where those items that you were interested in might be...India is
just as diverse as the human mind can be...i.e. the best sweeis are probably not
found in the most logically designed city...just as missed opportunity is not
revered in the same cities as where overwhelming success is the accepted

I do not know how much of the Third World countries
you've seen, but if you're new then I suggest you
begin your India visit from the South. Take a flight
to Bangalore, explore Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu
and Andhra and work your way up to Goa, Mumbai and
then the (dirty) North Indian parts. This way the
culture shock won't be such a rude one! Southern
India is cleaner, more literate and intellectually
more advanced than the North (no offense, North
Indians). And I include Maharashtra in Southern India
as I write this just to make it easier for you.

anybody groping you against your wishesis molesting you and deserves the same treatrment meted out to what are known as 'eve-teasers'.

Re: g_b I Wonder ?-culture of 'fuck-and-run.

2005-10-10 Thread john haddock

We all sympathise with your sentiments. Truely it is a problem for us all. I
particularly adore the companionship of my lover, his fantastic character, and
his soothing shoulder of sympathyand the sex too!

May I encourage you to look at the problem with a little more understanding -
after all, the gay dating scene has the same problems that the straight dating
scene has with the issue of intimacy outside sex. Just ask any woman who's
tried the dating game in the last 5 years. It's more a problem with our society
in general, rather than the gay scene in particular.

However, that said, it may be beneficial for you to think calmly and clearly
about the context of gay dating.

I assume you live in India.

The str8 marriage is essentially a 'social contract', originally an agreement
between families and individuals providing financial, material and emotional
support for the breeding and raising of children. This has changed drastically
in the last decade, but it remains the unspoken centre of any str8 marriage or
relationship. Str8 guys automatically see their girlfriend in the light of this
tradition. It gives their emotional and sexual connection an overall context.
Whether they eventually marry or not, they still play 'mummies and daddies' in
embryo throughout the course of their relationship.

The gay relationship (and marriage, if you live in some blessed countries) is
essentially a sensuality contract, an agreement based on sexual preference,
so it thrusts the sexual factor well to the forefront of the partnership. This
sexual contract is historically without much recent antecedence so it provides
not much in the way of tradition so as to inform the gay couple as to the
purpose and conduct of their relationship.

We must stay home and mind the kids.. is a regular str8 rule of conduct.
Which disco will we go to tonight?..is more often than not the gay rule of
conduct.

This has caused the gay community to be criticised for being 'shallow' and
'self centered', but I counter by pointing out that str8 couples who are
childless engage in much of the same free lifestyle, unfettered by the
financial and emotional constraints imposed on them by the breeding of children.

The point is this. You and I are inventing the gay relationship tradition. How
you conduct yourself will become part of the great tradition of Indian gayness.
The courage with which you confront your parents and society and come out of
the closet, the courage with which you encourage the guy you love to focus on
your emotional satisfaction before sensual satisfaction - all these things will
build eventually the beginnings of the 'Indian gay experience'. Don't give up
though just because the guy wants sex.

Remember, because of the strictures placed on Indian gay guys, there is a
culture of 'fuck-and-run. We had that here in the western gay scene for a long
time. But I assure you, it will change. And it will change because you as an
individual will not give up looking for a guy who satisfies your soul, as well
as your body.
Stick to it.

With your loving personality I am sure you will draw Mr Right to yourself
shortly. But don;t deny him his bedroom pleasures as well. He has needs too.

Good luck
John
