So I have realized that if I want to be a herper I am going to learn how to check parasites myself but one thing I am wondering about is once I know what parasites need to be treated, how do I get the meds? Do I go to the vet for them? Or can I get them from somewhere else?

I am trying to build a better cage for my U. fimbriatus and I was going to use a couple of coats of lacquer to waterproof the wood, inside and out, and a silicone sealant in the corners but I want to make sure It will not hurt her (ie chemicals and whatnot). What do you all think?

thanks danny, I am going to build a 2'x2'x4' terrarium for them. So that should work for a max of like 4 or 5?
Do you think I will have any problems breeding CB and WC together?
Do you know where I can get a good CB male between 5" to 6" snout to vent?

I am starting to worry about the summer because I don't have air conditioning. I have heard that swamp coolers are a good way to keep a room cold and a little bit of humidity as well. But I am interested to see if any of you have dealt with this problem before and have any suggestions?  I would just put in an air conditioner but it's not my house so I can't.

Just make sure you mist her frequently and get to a vet ASAP to get those parasites taken care of.  I've found that pinworms and hookworms tend to be the most common.  Electrolytes aid in reversing dehydration promptly...they facilitate the absorption of water.  It's what makes gatorade so good at hydrating you quickly.  I like to use Pedialyte which is a human baby product which is used to combat dehydration in children, especially during bouts of diarrhea.

If she's outwardly healthy now, as long as you get her dewormed soon you should have no problems.  If she's younger you'll also want to be sure to use a really good mineral suppliment...I like Minerall I for mine.

    Good luck!!

I keep several fimbriatus and to be be honest on a scale of 1-10 (10 being most difficult) I think U fimbriatus is a 7 or 8, one of the hardest to keep next to phants IMO.
Fimbriatus are much more sensitive to temperature & humidity fluctuations than henkeli.  The biggest problem with them I think, is that they don't take the importation process to well and suffer greatly from dehydration & internal parasites.  The most important thing about keeping fimbriatus is humidity/hydration...make sure that big paddle tail is nice and flat, if it's curled like a paper towel then you will need to get some electrolytes in there fast!

If your animal is already established and in good shape then it's prety easy to keep them that way as long as you keep the right temp & humidity ranges...CB animals are of course much more hardy but unfortuantely they are also much less common.

Hope this helps...somewhat.

wow julie! thanks for the info. Actually my gecko is a fimbriatus and yes she is wild caught. Would all the things you reccomended for the henkeli still apply?
I would defenetly go to the conservatory. But I can't go until next week. I'm exited just to see the place, I've never even heard of it before. Plus I get to go on a scavenger hunt for cool herps.
As for Niel, He is the reason I decided to learn more about gex, esp. leaf tails. His article in Reptile Magazine was awesome. Thanks Niel. But reading more about the Phant. I figured a less difficult leaf tail would be good to start with and I didn't see anything about fimbriatus being too dificult, what would you say is the fimbriatus rating on the scale of difficulty. Now I wish I had found out about the listserve before purchasing a gecko.

That's right Ron, I am not far, and love to have GGA members visit. Welcome Garrett! Are you willing to check for geckos in the Conservatory? That would be great if you could (see my other post). Back to your gecko - you have U. henkeli? Very sturdy Uros. Most of us are using tube-type full spectrum lights (emitting UVA and UVB) with them and I for one have been using low D3 ratio vitamins for them. These guys have very specific needs, husbandry and set-up. Neil Meister has been working with one of our resident vitamin experts, veterinarian Dr. Susan Donoghue, on getting a good vitamin supplement for these guys. Neil, what did you end up with? Was it the same for all of your Uros?As for U. phantasticus, I would put them at about a 9 or 10 out of 10 on the scale of difficulty. They are not easy gex - they are a good gecko to w
 ork with
once you have a good CB source for them like Neil, and some experience with the easier Uros under your belt. I have had really bad luck with WC U. phantasticus and U. ebenaui. Also WC U. sikorae for that matter! The first step you can take with your U. henkeli, which I bet is WC, is to get a fecal done and start working on his parasite load. [gecko]GGA is so cool!

2004-02-22 Thread Garrett Peterson
Hello all,

My name is Garrett. I'm 18 and I live in the bay area so anyone else in this crazy place should give me a yell. I love meeting new people, especially when they like geckos.
I'll be honest, I have only had two geckos. An african fat tail when I was 10 that is no longer with me. And after doing research in leaf tail care I got a giant leaf tail female, her name is Maple. So if anyone can give me good advice about geckos or giant leaf tails in general I would be your friend forever.
I am also planning on breeding U.phantasticus in the future so anyone who has the same interest in leaf tail breeding that I do I would love to talk.
Well I hope to hear from you nice people soon. HAPPY TRAILS!
