I think we can wait for the suitable name search to complete their work. I believe it is better to get the rename decision done as soon as is reasonable, but also that whatever checks need to be made do happen. I mostly posted this question for my understanding. I wasn't sure how the name change related to a release. I did see some notes in one of the older suitable name search entries in Jira that talked about a podling establishing themselves and making a release before the name is approved, but I thought it would be better in this case to have a name that is less likely to cause confusion before making a release. I just want to ask advice on whether there are any dependencies on releases, etc before the name can be approved. Or, if there is a dependency on the name approval before making a release. I hope that makes sense... Regards, Kathy
Advice for incubator releases and naming
I'm working on Apache Quarks and the community has been very active over the last few months. I was thinking about the right time to start a release; we are still working on the build and license issues, but should be able to start the process once that is done. I had thought we would want to wait for a release until we have the name approved. The name Quarks does have some uniqueness issues, and I have opened a suitable name search to change the name to Apache Edgent ( https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PODLINGNAMESEARCH-105). I was looking at the incubator release pages, and realized that there is nothing that states that the name must be approved prior to a release. Should we wait until it is approved, particularly given that Quarks has some uniqueness issues or is it acceptable to proceed? Is there an expectation that we will have a release prior to the name being approved? Thanks for any advice; this is my first direct experience with incubation. Regards, Kathy

[RESULT][VOTE] Rename Quarks
I want to report that the Quarks community has voted on a new name, and the result is Apache Edgent. I have submitted a suitable name search https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PODLINGNAMESEARCH-105. Following is the note I sent to the Quarks dev list with the voting results. The result of the vote is Edgent is the first place choice. I will submit Edgent for a suitable name search and Kinaara will be the backup, in case there are any issues with Edgent. Thank you for voting; I think participation has been excellent through these naming votes! Kinaara received 8 votes (2 binding) and Edgent received 7 (6) binding. The overall voting was very close, but Edgent is the choice as the binding votes are significantly higher. Here is the breakdown: Edgent: Susan (binding) Queenie (binding) Dan (binding) Cazen (binding) Mike Victor (binding) Kathy S (binding) Kinaara: Dale (binding) James Kendrick Samantha Kathey M (binding) Stanley Janagan Sandeep Regards, Kathy S
Re: [VOTE] Accept Quarks into the Apache Incubator
+1 (non-binding) I have read through the proposal and everything appears to be in place. I think this will be a great incubator project.
