A big fat +1 for Ceki, who has been IMVHO the best addition to our group
lately... Whohooo! :)

> [+1] Peter Donald

I have been changing the vote up here at least 20 times from +1 to -1 and
back to +1... It's really hard for me to decide on Peter, as, I have to
admit it, he is not my best pal while actually we are in deep conflict most
of the times. But...

I have to admit that our disagreements come most of the times from technical
discussions, and the PMC is not about code (as the JSR-096, or Avalon :) but
more about organization and structure of the Jakarta Project itself...

I met you thru the Avalon project, and you kept screwing and screwing all
builds, all design patterns, the Configurable interface (WAAGGHHH) and
so on, and how for one interface, you kept writing 250 abstract classes
extending each other (I am still laughing when I read your last email on the
Daemon JSR - not "deamon" :), so, I have to admit that, yes, I don't like
the way you code. And I don't like your attitude, goddamit, wherever I turn
not to see your face, WHOPS, there you are, thank god you didn't yet tackled
the Tomcat mailing list _that_much_ and please don't do it :)

But I have to admit that you are a smart kid, and when opportunely flamed,
you get right on top of things (read, the one two weeks ago on the Daemon
API and Fede's on Avalon!)... And basically you're omni-present, and that's
very good for a PMC member...

So, welcome, and try not to complicate things too much, you know I like
simple and linear things...

I've seen Ted and Ceki in action on this list, and I'm sure they
will be a great fit for PMC given their involvement with guidelines
and procedures.

I'm afraid I have not seen much of the others personally, but we need
participants from all subprojects and from what I've heard from
others, these are all great contributors.

So, +1 for all of them.

I'm not 100% sure of my status as a Turbine committer (i.e. do I count

And my answer would be no, I am not.

But I am also disappointed with the way this list was created, and that
gives me one more reason not to be on the list or the PMC !

( I think most of the proposed names are great, but that doesn't mean the
process is right ! ).

And again, I agree with you. Tomcat is a reasonable stable and mature
project, with enough commiters - I don't think it needs too much PMC
attention. Smaller projects need that - and people who are involved in
cross-project would help much more.

But that doesn't change the fact that jakarta commiters should make the
proposals and vote. Neither the fact that this should have been discussed
on the general list before.

Yes - it would have been controversial and probably it would have taken a
long time to get an agreement.

( sorry, I'm not sure about this whole "have been" thing, it's not a
simple past tense :-).

+1 ( doesn't matter anyway - in the current rules only PMC members can
vote to add new PMC members anyway ).

I thought that if you want to promote openess by having this election, you
should as well allow us to just vote for any committer. People are not aware
of the fact that Costin may or may not be interested.

Note that you also must be willing to do some project management work (which
can
be time consuming) if you're elected and accept the nomination (which isn't
something I'd be willing to do personally).

Before questioning the people that came up with this list, perhaps first
you should ask Costin if this is an opportunity he would be interested in.

While I will admit that I didn't ask him this go around, Costin and I have
discussed his joining the PMC. Each time I left with the distinct
impression that he was not interested. I will say that I am impressed not
only by his work on Tomcat but also his contributions to the current
library discussions.

This certainly is not the last round of nominations.

That suggestion has some merit. However, I am concerned that the resulting
list would end up with a number of people interested in some of the larger
subprojects and not many people interested in some of the smaller ones.

Getting coverage over the entire code base was the primary motivation for
this round of elections. I realize that some view the 3.3 release of
Tomcat as a separate project, but in fact it is a release of a subproject.
There are quite a few PMC members with commit access to that code base and
who follow tomcat-dev closely. And have helped both publically and "behind
the scenes" getting Tomcat 3.3 approved.

to think that what he said a while ago (basically, that nobody here cares about
code and contributions, and that it's all about politics) is really true after

IMHO, the best election process would be to let the committers submit a ballot
containing the list of committers they want to have in the PMC. Then, just
choose the 10 - 15 committers who got the most votes.

To voice my disapproval with the current process, I won't participate in the

Nominations for the Jakata PMC

2001-02-26 Thread Sam Ruby

One of the concerns expressed by the ASF board was that the Jakarta PMC
members did not have enough combined bandwidth to adequately manage all of
the codebases under the Jakarta umbrella. I would like to take this
opportunity to address this concern by inducting new members into the PMC.
I have polled the existing PMC members for nominations, and the following
are the results:

[ ] Peter Donald
[ ] Diane Holt
[ ] Ted Husted
[ ] Ceki Gülcü
[ ] Geir Magnusson Jr.
[ ] Daniel F. Savarese
[ ] Jason van Zyl

In accordance to the Jakarta guidelines, I encourage all developers to
participate in this vote. Note, however, that the PMC bylaws state that
once nominated, all of the PMC will vote and those receiving a 3/4 positive
vote will become a member.

I'll start off the voting with a +1 for each.
