[gentoo-dev] Packages up for grabs

2011-06-12 Thread Michal Januszewski
Hi,

I have a number of packages in which I have lost interest and which I
no longer want to maintain:

app-admin/hddtemp
app-misc/linux-logo
dev-util/oprofile
net-libs/libtlen
sci-mathematics/gimps
sci-mathematics/xmds
sci-misc/vitables
sys-apps/fakechroot
sys-apps/fakeroot-ng
sys-apps/memtest86+
www-client/elinks
x11-misc/xfractint

All the packages require relatively low maintenance and currently have
no open bugs (with the exception on memtest86+ and bug #339691).

I will reassign them to maintainer-needed in about a week. If you
want to take them, please just add yourself to metadata.xml directly.

Thanks,

Re: [gentoo-dev] [rfc] Rendering the official Gentoo logo / Blender,2.04, Python 2.2

 Hi folks,

Sebastian told me about the problem of not being able to render the
logo in recent blender versions. So this is were I stepped in: I tried
it and used the geometries from the old .blender file, and the
 yellowish reflecting image.

Problem was to recreate the exact representation of the original logo,
by new means of rendering and relighting. I tried to solve them by
creating a new material for the g and carefully adjusting the
parameters. Also I added a new modifier for the geometry to get rid of
the ugly seam at the sharp edge. (This does not modify the geometry,
 only the rendering of it)

However, here are my preliminary results:

  - the modified .blend-file[1] (tested with blender 2.57b)
  - new rendered logo image [2]
  - original logo image (for comparison)[3]

 What do you think?

 Greetings, Mario.

Hi Mario,
Thanks for taking the time to do this, looks great by me.

Andreas, maybe increase the removal to 30 days? Desktop users tend to be
less aware of these things and take longer to upgrade.

Well, the question is whether that helps... :) with an updated portage tree,
you cannot install KDE 4.4 (and thereby kbluetooth) anymore. So this would be
for the use-case alone when someone still has KDE 4.4 installd and wants to
add bluetooth support without upgrading.

Anyway, why not... I'll just leave it in for a while longer.

Cheers, Andreas

Are you talking in a hypothetical future situation, or has this already
happened? If so, can you point to an example of where Diego's been
removing people for disagreeing with him, rather than for disagreeing
 with the Council?

how is disagreeing with a Council decision valid grounds either ?  punting
people because they disagree with any group isn't really valid.

a user POV:

If you are in the role of enforcing decision of the council and with
disagreeing you mean acting versus their decision yes it's a very
much valid ground.

In real life if you are a policeman and disagree with politicians you
must anyway enforce their laws or you're jailed.

Anyway maybe the whole QA should resign (you too Diego) and election
done again, seem the more correct thing at this point

Hi,

I'd like to help on some packages above.
I use fakeroot and fakechroot daily and memtest are very
useful to me.
I'm not a gentoo developer but I play with ebuild on my overlay since
few month : http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=user/aluco.git;a=summary
I think my main contribution in my overlay is the phoronix-test-suite.
I'd like to go forward and I wish to help the sunrise projet (if those
packages fall on the overlay). I'd like to make sure if my ebuilds follow
gentoo's standards and collaborate closer to the developers.
I'm not sure I'm aware of all gentoo's procedures, do you think
all of this will be faisable and am I on the right way?

Thanks,
Anthoine

You might want to chuck it out and start from scratch...

Much of the difficulty with the original webapp-config was that it was
designed to work on Windows. Stuart's plan was to create a distribution
and operating system independent way of dealing with web apps, sort of
like CPAN; Gentoo was merely the testbed. If your goals don't match
that, you're probably better rethinking everything than trying to revive
something that was designed for a completely different purpose.

Also, for pure Gentoo needs it may be better to replace webapp-config with
package manager and eclasses.
So to install web apps to /usr/share or sth and provide apache config files to
set up those webapps like Debian does for instance - so dispatch-conf would be
utilized for tracking config file modifications and uninstall via unmerge

One major obstacle is that we have quite a number of web servers to support if
we're to provide out of the box experience for those web apps.
