It will get everything (making a copy of the physical disk surface). Due
to the fact that your machine didn't boot but data is available, I'd
think your old HDD isn't corrupted but the partition for /boot or the
MBR itself.

Try to setup grub for your old HDD too. Maybe you'll have a HDD more

Just a thought

[gentoo-user] Thunderbird, clamscan, mbox-maildir

2005-09-02 Thread PaulNM

Hi all,

Recently I've been messing around with clamscan on my system and
checking all my files. Anyway, clamscan found some things in my
thunderbird files.

Thunderbird currently uses mbox format for storing emails. The clamscan
info I've read says it stops at the first positive hit in an mbox file.
The only way to find which email, and all the emails, is by converting
(a copy) to maildir format. Then I can scan that, then delete the
offending email from the mbox file from within thunderbird.

So far I've found mb2md (http://batleth.sapienti-sat.org/projects/mb2md/)
which returns:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/mboxwork $ ./mb2md-3.20.pl -s Inbox
Fatal: Source is not an mbox file or a directory!

Using less verifies that it is the actual mailbox. I've tried renaming
to Inbox.mbx, even making a copy of the entire tree and working inside
that. I still get the same message.

Any ideas?

2005-09-02 Thread Stefan Frank
Hi

I just had a quick look at your message, I think I may provide you a solution:

It all depends on which driver is called first - so may control this by adding
the modules of your two soundcards in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6. Add
the one you need to work with Gnome first and the other one second. I had the
same problem with my two cards and was able to get the right card to
get /dev/dsp1 instead of /dev/dsp2.

Hope this helps!

I had this too after I botched a VNC install. I solved it by
purging /tmp and all the config files in my home directory. There is
probably a better way but it was a new install and I didn't have my
files on it anyhow. So try creating a new user with a new home
directory and see if that fixes things.

I am having the same annoying problem and tried creating a new user but
the new user has the same problem. This is on amd64 too.

I did some RTFM, and it appears that emerging 32-bit apps requires a
bit of a hassle. You basically have to install a 32-bit chroot
environment, which you drop into to do the 32-bit emerges. What apps
would you want to emerge 32-bit, you ask? Here's a partial list, off
the top of my head, of what you lose if you go 64-bit-only...
   - OpenOffice does not build in 64-bit mode.

No, but openoffice-bin works fine on AMD64, and the latest OOo is only
available as a binary package anyway.

   - 32-bit plugins for your web-browser of choice

True.

   - kiss internet TV goodbye, because...
 - RealPlayer is distributed as a 32-bit app

Which works in a 64 bit environment.

The final straw for me was that LILO is masked out for 64 bits, and
GRUB is the only available bootloader. GRUB seems to have been
afflicted by Microsoft-featureitis disease. It's got a whole lot of
additional complexity, which allows it to display an image of Clippy (or
Tux) at bootup. Come-on guys; people need a *BOOTLOADER*, not a
singing/dancing penguin or paperclip, at bootup.

So don't use that option, in the same way you don't use the equivalent
option in LILO. Like it or not, some people don't want to look at a bunch
of text when their computer boots, it scares or bores them. such an
option may not be for you but others do want it, which is why both
bootloaders have it.

well, I have a similar problem, since I switched from devfs to udev.
'coldplug' loads the sound modules in the wrong order, and I have to restart
alsasound after the boot to get the soundcards working the way I want.

RANT:

at this point, udev did nothing good for me.
Booting takes a lot longer (waiting for rtc, coldplug insists loading the
scsi-drivers), I had to deal with the 'rules' several times to get the
permissions for my dvd burner right, and IF I need my scsi-card I have to
reload the driver, because just turning on the tape drive and modprobing 'st'
does not work anymore (the tape-devices will just not be created).

Maybe devfs should have stayed a little longer.

The problem seems to be that the Gkrellm2 sensor display needs

but continues ok if the same kernel is booted.
This is with Lm_sensors, which I have emerged configured:

In any case, 'sensors' (Lm command) shows the correct figures from CLI,

2 oddities I've noticed going over to Udev along with changing kernels:
(1) Udev make the floppy device root-only by default,
so you have to add 'purslow' (whoever) to the 'floppy' group;
(2) 2.6.12 + Udev defines a smaller set of devices than 2.6.9 + Udev ,
even tho' I've suppressed the cacheing which Gentoo adds
(the extras are ptya0-zf ttya0-zf : perhaps due to kernel config ? ).

to overwrite what you install.

Otherwise portage will think it's in there.

I have one more dumb question. What man page do I read to understand
how to use LDFLAGS? I was thinking this was a variable in make.conf
however I just read the man page for make.conf and I see that it is not
documented there. Also looked around at gentoo.org documentation, but
didn't find anything that helps yet.

LDFLAGS typically come in the -llib and -Lpath variety and are used to
ensure that additional libraries and paths are included in the link phase.
You typically won't need to add these (which is probably why there is little
if any reference in the gentoo doc).

Obviously there are more uses for LDFLAGS, but those above are used the
most.

If you do need them you can set up your environment variables before doing
the make process. You can also use them on the command line ala
LDFLAGS=-llib make, etc.

Re: [gentoo-user] No auto-add to programs list in GNOME after emerges

2005-09-02 Thread Holly Bostick
Greg Shikhman schreef:
 Hi,

After installing gentoo and gnome on my current system, I don't get
programs added to my program files after emerging them (ex:
firefox-bin does not enter the menu after emerging it, I have to do
it manually). Could anyone list any reasons why this could happen?

Does the item still not appear after you have in one way or another
restarted the gnome-panel (thereby re-reading the menu)?

I.e. , 1) killing gnome-panel and letting it restart; 2) logging out and
back in; 3) rebooting.

It fairly often happens that one expects the program to automatically
appear immediately after install (and much of the time it does), but it
does not appear to occur, because of the way the program is added to the
menu (or something), and so the item is there, but the menu is not
updated 'on-the-fly' to actually show it (until the menu in memory is
re-read due to a restart of the panel).

I see this a lot with -bin programs, for some reason (Loki stuff, OO.o,
doom3 and the like), they just don't show up till I log off and on
again-- but since I usually don't log off and on again, or reboot for
that matter, I think that there's something wrong.

Second possibility is that the programs you're installing are KDE or
other WM programs that are not interoperable with the GNOME menu. This
is obviously not the case for something like Firefox, but you could
install oh, KPat, 750 times and it's never going to appear in the
GNOME menu (though K3b will).

Third possibility is that you're using an older version of GNOME with
even more broken menu functionality than the current version (2.10.x)
has? GNOME, like KDE is migrating to the freedesktop.org standard, but
until such migration is complete, we will still encounter bumps like
this. GNOME 2.10 is the first major effort to integrate these standards,
and it's not a completely smooth transition (especially since many
application install routines are not necessarily compiant with the
standard either, sometimes because the install routine was created
before there *was* a standard to comply with). That probably explains
why I see this most with -bin files.

Anyway, hope this helps... I think the problem may not be as great as it
appears, but please test and see.

Try again (while logged out of KDE):

rm ~/.kde
ln -s .kde3.4 ~/.kde

Your .kde is a dir, it should be a symlink.

so i wondered, if someone has still an ebuild of an old

Go to the main Gentoo page, use the View our CVS item in the sidebar

Re: [gentoo-user] (AMD64) wrong soundcard is becoming default - Gnome unhappy

2005-09-02 Thread Mark Knecht
Hi Stefan,
Nice idea but it seems it didn't work in my case. I set this in
/etc/modules.autoload

lightning ~ # cat /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
# /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6: kernel modules to load when
system boots.#
# Note that this file is for 2.6 kernels.

snd-intel8x0
snd-hdsp
ohci1394
sbp2
realtime gid=600 any=1
lightning ~ #

and then rebooted. It didn't change the name:

lightning ~ # cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [CK804 ]: NFORCE - NVidia CK804
 NVidia CK804 with ALC850 at 0xda103000, irq 185
1 [default]: H-DSP - Hammerfall DSP
RME Hammerfall HDSP 9652 at 0xda00, irq 209
lightning ~ #

Note that in my case it's not that the cards are out of order. They
are in the order that I wanted. The NVidia is #0 and the HDSP is #1.
That is correct. The only thing that is wrong, as far as I know right
now, if the name. It says

1 [default]

instead of

1 [hdsp9652 ]

I got a response back form the Alsa developers. They see a problem
with the way the naming is done in the code. I'm filing a bug report
and it will get cleaned up at some future date.

Thanks for the idea. I had great hopes!

Cheers,
Mark

That suggests that you have misconfigured something in your new kernel

Do you possibly have DRI enabled in the kernel? It is on by default in a
new kernel config, but it must be turned off for the ATI drivers to work.

Second, did you re-emerge ati-drivers after compiling the new kernel?

Third, is your xorg.conf set to use internal agpgart (from the fglrx
driver) or not (external agpgart from the kernel)?

If it is set to no, because you need to use the kernel module, did you
also enable support for your motherboard, if a kernel module is
available for that?

What, btw, is your motherboard/chipset? And what is your ATI card, while
we're at it? Is your system 32-bit or 64-bit?

This driver does in fact work under 2.6.12; I've been using two
different versions of the driver (8.14.13-r2 and 8.16.20) under several
2.6.12 series kernels (-r6, r9, and now -r10 as soon as I reboot), and I
know it works without 'extra' modification from what is normally
necessary to get these drivers to install properly. I haven't seen the
'black screen on boot' issue since before we went to the new numbering
system (or shortly after we went to the new numbering system; in any
case, it's been so long that I don't even remember exactly when it
stopped in terms of it being a driver problem, rather than an error on
my part).

[gentoo-user] Getting direct rendering (DRI) to work with ATI 9550 video card

2005-09-02 Thread John Lange
According to everything I've read, the ATI 9550 should be fully
supported with Xorg.

I have followed the steps in the Gentoo ATI FAQ to the letter (in fact
several times over) and I simply can not get this card to work right.
The log always reports DRI initialization failed! and my desktop is so
slow I can watch most windows draw.

If someone could have a look at my Xorg.log and give me a hint as to
what might be wrong that would be greatly appreciated.

The following 4 items are included inline to help with debugging. Please
excuse their rather large size.

I could (definitely) be wrong, but I doubt that the ebuild forces -O3 in
the CFLAGS; perhaps you should consider dropping down to -O2 and see if
that helps. Also, the fact that -O3 is involved makes me at least wonder
what other 'unstable' CFLAGS you may be using, so please post your
emerge info.

Yes it does work with 2.6.12 kernels..

not for me... same config (as in 2.6.11) leads to black screen in
2.6.12 and all i can do then is a reboot

That suggests that you have misconfigured something in your new kernel

Do you possibly have DRI enabled in the kernel? It is on by default in a
new kernel config, but it must be turned off for the ATI drivers to work.

no..

Second, did you re-emerge ati-drivers after compiling the new kernel?

yes

Third, is your xorg.conf set to use internal agpgart (from the fglrx
driver) or not (external agpgart from the kernel)?

internal/external both tested

If it is set to no, because you need to use the kernel module, did you
also enable support for your motherboard, if a kernel module is
available for that?

yes enabled intel-module

What, btw, is your motherboard/chipset? And what is your ATI card, while
we're at it? Is your system 32-bit or 64-bit?

intel 875P (32bit)

This driver does in fact work under 2.6.12; I've been using two
different versions of the driver (8.14.13-r2 and 8.16.20) under several
2.6.12 series kernels (-r6, r9, and now -r10 as soon as I reboot), and I
know it works without 'extra' modification from what is normally
necessary to get these drivers to install properly. I haven't seen the
'black screen on boot' issue since before we went to the new numbering
system (or shortly after we went to the new numbering system; in any
case, it's been so long that I don't even remember exactly when it
stopped in terms of it being a driver problem, rather than an error on
my part).

so i think it is my fault, but do not know exactly

[gentoo-user] Cannot disable FF's prefetch 'feature'

2005-09-02 Thread Mick
Hi All,

It has been mentioned in this list and elsewhere that toggling
network.prefetch-next to false in the about:config should do just that. I
was just looking at my netstat output as soon as I fired FF and guess what
I saw!

There was also a connection to 212.58.226.19 which is one of the IP's for
BBC online news and just as it happens that was the second next address in
FF's dropdown address bar.

This happens despite having toggled the network.prefetch-next to false. Is
there anything else I can toggle for this setting to work as it is supposed
to?

Sorry for not including it in the original posting but here is the
section from xorg.conf which includes the load glx. Following that is
the error message it generates in the log file. Then the listing
of /usr/lib/modules/extensions/ which (sort of) contains a libglx.so. I
think this may be where the problem is but I'm clueless as to why libglx
wouldn't be working.

-
Section Module

Loadtype1
Loadfreetype

# This loads the GLX module
Loadglx # libglx.a

Which results in (Xorg.log):

Have you restarted Firefox since you changed the setting? Any such

The module not existing would seem to be a good reason that it doesn't

I'm wondering if the drivers built correctly in the first place.

What version of the drivers, what kernel, is /usr/src/linux symlinked to
the actual kernel that you're running, and could you re-emerge the
ati-drivers package, watching *very* carefully for any messages that say
that DRI could not be built? (If such a message appears, the emerge will
complete 'normally', but the drivers won't work, as you might imagine.)

I've re-emerged the ati drivers several times but can't hurt to do it

Re: [gentoo-user] Slightly OT: favorite window manager/desktop environ?

2005-09-02 Thread Wade Brown
I suppose to make this thread complete I'll be the first (maybe only?)
one to voice support for good old WindowMaker. I think the
biggest reason I still use it is that I'm just stuck in a rut, I have
been running it for ages and have never wanted anything better.
It's definitely light weight enough to suit most needs for people who
have that desire, theming exists, but no actual skinning support.
It's a bit boxier than most so for eyecandy, it's not stellar, but has
a simple clean feel to it.

I think my favorite feature is the dockapps (check
http://www.bensinclair.com/dockapp/ for examples), which I know are
clearly portable, but integrate most cleanly into WindowMaker.
These can provide that desired eyecandy, such as wmBlob, or simple
controls to your favorite programs, like wmXMMS. With adjustable
icon width, these can take up almost no space around your edges leaving
plenty of real estate for your web browsers and such. Better
still, they don't even have to be reserved space, they can just fade
into the background. One extra bonus to XFCE users is WindowMaker
works fairly well with that on top, not that I use it, but I've known a
few people who do because they like the added functionality.

I'm sure none of my reasons justify WindowMaker as the best choice for
my desires, but like I said, I'm in a rut, and it's quite
comfortable. Maybe when the bedsores start popping up I'll come
back to this thread...

Incorrect. Flash memory only has a limited write lifetime, treating it

One thought would be that you may not have
PHPMyAdmin configured properly. Is the error you are getting a
PHPMyAdmin error page or a browser error? Is your webserver setup to
server the pages properly (no offense just going for the obvious
first). Is the MySQL user your are trying to login as allowed to login

Yup. Like in three years or so... I've dropped both floppies and CD-RW discs

The down side is: not every computer out there can boot from a USB device. So

It sounds like the size of your root partition might be too small. What size
(in GB) did you make root, swap, and home? I'd never try and install Gentoo
with less than a 4 GB root, assuming I wanted much on it. Plusm Gentoo needs
room to work when doing your compiling, which is a feature of Gentoo and
source based distros. If you don't have much space, I recommend Slax as one
of the best small yet feature packed distro. There are other good ones

Walter Dnes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I did some RTFM, and it appears that emerging 32-bit apps requires a
bit of a hassle. You basically have to install a 32-bit chroot
environment, which you drop into to do the 32-bit emerges.

This is a hassle, but not a huge one. For a lot of things it isn't
actually necessary anyway.

 What apps
would you want to emerge 32-bit, you ask? Here's a partial list, off
the top of my head, of what you lose if you go 64-bit-only...
   - OpenOffice does not build in 64-bit mode.

openoffice-bin works very well.

   - 32-bit plugins for your web-browser of choice

web browser of choice-bin is again what you want. OK, you use some
flexibility in both of these, but the problem is only caused by closed
source 32 bit binaries anyway.

   - kiss internet TV goodbye, because...
 - RealPlayer is distributed as a 32-bit app

Which will work with multilib support. The plugin still requires the
32 bit precompiled browser though.

 - mplayer, itself, will compile in 64-bit mode. However, the
   win32codecs don't exist in a 64-bit equivalent.

There is now a mplayer-bin ebuild which supports win32codecs. It too
works very well.

The final straw for me was that LILO is masked out for 64 bits,
and GRUB is the only available bootloader. GRUB seems to have been
afflicted by Microsoft-featureitis disease. It's got a whole lot of
additional complexity, which allows it to display an image of Clippy
(or Tux) at bootup. Come-on guys; people need a *BOOTLOADER*, not a
singing/dancing penguin or paperclip, at bootup.

GRUB is just a boot loader. It's a very flexible one, but that's all.
If you don't want the graphics then you're under no obligation to use
them.

What advantages does 64-bit mode offer? I don't have terabytes of
RAM so that ability isn't required.

Well my Athlon64 can only use 40 bit address bus, that's 1TB of RAM. I
doubt I could fit it into the motherboard though.

address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual

 64-bit mode is allegedly faster
by default on other distros. This is probably true. The underlying
reason for that is that in 64-bit mode, the gcc compiler defaults to
include the flags -mmmx -msse -msse2 -msse3

I hope not! My vintage of Athlon64 wouldn't like it at all.

flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge
mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 syscall
  nx mmxext lm 3dnowext 3dnow

Notice there is no sse3 support.

 -m3dnow -mfpmath=sse
for the AMD64 cpu, which it doesn't do for 32-bit mode on the same
chip. On a binary distro, you're stuck with what you're given. With
Gentoo, we Gentoo ricers can set those flags in /etc/make.conf and
get their benefit. So that advantage for 64-bit mode disappears in
 Gentoo.

The real underlying cause of better performance in 64 bit mode is that
it has twice as many CPU registers available. The x86 architecture
was always deficient in this respect and AMD64 had put this right at
long last. Personally I wouldn't have minded a few more, but that
probably isn't really necessary.

As for the ATI driver I set it up quickly today using the radeon
  driver from xorg-x11.

After reading your message, I tried Radeon, and it seems to work. I
manually entered the frequencies for my monitor, and 1600 X 1200 works
 fine.

My NVIDIA works with the AMD64 Linux driver very well too. Of course
the OSS drivers in xorg-x11 also work well as long as you don't need 3D
support.

Now I just need to get the sound chip working.

Which chip is it you have? My emu10k1 based Audigy 2 works well with
the in kernel driver. I'd expect most of the other OSS kernel
supported chips to work in 64 bit mode too.

Hi, Ive recently rebuilt a few things and Ive just noticed that my
movies (the few clips that I have are mostly MS AFS and avi are all
greyscale) have no colour! This occurs with xine and totem - mplayer
is going through one of its always segfaulting stages so I cant tell
if its related to this problem or not.

The only apps I can think of that were relevant were win32codecs and
ffmpeg which I am currently rebuilding but dont think will help. Any
 clues that may help welcome!

My immediate thought is that the colour settings for xv overlay have got
messed up. In xine have a look at the xine Control Window. That
should enable you to make some sensible settings. If you don't mind a
text programme have a look at the output of xvinfo.

Thanks, but Ive just fixed it - well rather its fixed but I dont know
the cause. I recompiled a number of video programs and related stuff,
and after a reboot its all back to normal.

Thanks,
