[gentoo-user] Curious about bittorrent
My best connectivity sometimes is behind a firewall at school. It's a pretty paranoid firewall, although for pretty understandable reasons. I have trouble accessing many types of content that are useful for teaching (streaming video, for example), and while my students might chat with other students around the world about migrating birds, the kneejerk reactionary firewall obviously blocks that. As a good citizen of the school citizen and a good netizen, I wonder where to stand on bittorrent. It seems like goodness to me; but is there any way to even dl a torrent as a dl? Is that something bizaare? How would you handle that? If I mention it to the Powers that Be, such as they are, I will get a stern look and next week my connection will mysteriously disappear. I guess it's dumb to ask, but what do people do and what do people think about this? [gentoo-user] fsck.ext3 error (only sometimes)
Hi all, I've come across a weird issue. The other day I decided that it's been a while since I've had a good read/write badblocks run through fsck.ext3 on all my partitions. The problem is with /dev/hdb1 , normally mounted on my Gentoo system as /olddeb since it's a small install of Debian that I keep as a backup. Robotech / # fsck.ext3 -fccv -C 0 /dev/hdb1 e2fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006) ext2fs_block_iterate: Ext2 file too big while sanity checking the bad blocks inode Robotech / # I get the same thing with one -c as well. The partition is unmounted. If I run it without any bad block check I get: Robotech / # fsck.ext3 -fv -C 0 /dev/hdb1 e2fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006) Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes Pass 2: Checking directory structure Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity Pass 4: Checking reference counts Pass 5: Checking group summary information 95216 inodes used (19%) 1854 non-contiguous inodes (1.9%) # of inodes with ind/dind/tind blocks: 5188/57/0 636738 blocks used (65%) 0 bad blocks 0 large files 78031 regular files 7459 directories 1326 character device files 4170 block device files 2 fifos 364 links 4217 symbolic links (3987 fast symbolic links) 2 sockets 95571 files Robotech / # badblocks -nvs /dev/hdb1 seems to run fine, but I am worried about the ext2fs_block_iterate: Ext2 file too big while sanity checking the bad blocks inode message. Any hits I've found about this has other errors occurring as well, usually DriveReady SeekComplete errors. As a result, I'm only seeing responses about the other (more serious) errors, no explanation of this specific message. This is the only partition I'm seeing this on, no other error messages at all. Hdb 2,3, and 4 are fine (all ext3). I remounted /dev/hdb1: The largest file on it is 71 megabytes. After moving it to another partition, df -h shows: FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hdb1 3.7G 2.4G 1.2G 67% /olddeb Unmounted and tried again, still getting same message. [gentoo-user] gentoo 2006.1 installation ERROR
Hi , This is about gentoo installation of 2006.1 . When i booted up from the live cd and let it to proceed with the graphical installation , that installation gives , error saying , Can not connect to the DHCP server . Then after i did disabled DHCP in boot prompt ( no dhcp ) . Then again i restarted the instllation and finally faced a nother problem , as follows ,"switching to xorg-x11 open GL interface"From that point it wasnt proceed any more , can somebody tell me where is the problem ? what i have done wrong ?Thank you,Shaine. [gentoo-user] Sata failure during install
Hi all,
trying to install 2006.1 on a machine with
an ASUS PC-DL board (Intel ICH5R SATA controller and 2 Maxtor SATA
drives) I get (lots of)
dma timeout retry: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
during the initial formatting.
Is this board known to be broken?

The whole point of gnome (and gnome-light is just a minimal subset of that) is to display stuff on the screen and for that you require X, so leave it in the USE flags so portage can do the right thing. If you updated portage, maybe the reason is this: In portage-2.1.1, emerge --newuse is now sensitive to changes in IUSE. Arggghhh, recent baselayout/portage/profile changes strike again. That's an old location. You need a make.globals - it's kinda important Like me you may find it at /etc/make.globals I also recall recently portage was doing similar things to me - it was also creating one or two zombies every time it ran. Consistently, I would see a zombie in top, and emerge would fail. kill -9 the zombie and emerge would work again. The whole point of gnome (and gnome-light is just a minimal subset of that) is to display stuff on the screen and for that you require X, so leave it in the USE flags so portage can do the right thing. Why do you want to do such a thing anyway? If you're planning to use a remote X server you, you should compile xorg-server with USE=minimal. [gentoo-user] glibc-2.4-rc3 failing on system with 2 glibc's already
Well, as the title, glibc is failing on me on my server. I have noticed that in the stack trace there is: multiple definition of `__libc_multiple_libcs' and emerge --info shows glibc-2.3.6-r4 and glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1 are both installed. Not sure why. Not sure even if this is the problem. My instinct is to unmerge glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1 and try again, but the ominous warning from portage coupled with the fact this is my live mail/web server is making me hesitant to try this. Any thoughts? Just wanted some input here before I plunge ahead... thanks. Does anyone know of a way to set your system's front side bus speed in software? My Dell motherboard and BIOS don't seem to have any facility for it, and I've heard there is a utility in Windows that will allow you to set it. Isn't there a jumper or two on the circuit board that you should dis/connect according to the MoBo's manual to effect this? MoBos that don't have either a BIOS menu choice or a jumper set up and rely on a software hack perhaps mean that they are not meant to run (reliably) at anything other than default speeds - on the other hand it may just mean that HP/Dell/etc. were providing something cheap cheerful with my granny in mind and couldn't be bothered to fic their buggy BIOS'. With Gentoo compiling its own software the demands placed on a machine are somewhat more onerous than that seen by a typical M$Windoze setup. The Dell motherboard detects the CPU's FSB and sets it that way. The board officially supports 66/100/133. My Celeron 700 runs at 66FSB, but I'd like to try 100FSB so my memory will run at full speed and I can see if the CPU can handle 1050 (10.5x multiplier). A bit off topic here but I'm getting mail into my spam traps about Chase bank account being frozen etc etc. Please go here and give all your private personal information into the little box. This particular one is semi slick since it has managed to be injected into newsguy with out showing more than one earlier Recieved header. I've done a little digging (no pun intended) on the address with `dig' and jwhois, but I'm not getting a phone number or email address to report this to. Maybe your are abled to mount the FAT partition after you fixed the partition table. Well, fixing it basically means: delete it, and create a new one. Typically, the FAT partition simply comsumes the whole disk. There should be a fair chance, that (c)fdisk chooses the same start/end-sectors for the partition like any other tool (including the camera). If all you want to do is run the RAM faster, what you usually have is a FSB to RAM multiplier (can't remember what it's called - my overclocking days are long gone :) Which allows you to run the ram at 100 or 133... Does anyone know of a way to set the FSB in software? Not me! My best recommendation would be to buy a really good overclocking motherboard - one with all these features in the bios. You should be able to get S370 mbs on ebay for cheap.
