Back in 'those days', cycle-counting is a must for all programmers. Heck, as
recent as 8088, programmers still do cycle-counting (especially assembly
programmers).

Kids these days have it sooo much easier.

Thank you *VERY* much for those nice links!!! :) Great stuff!

I know, that benchmarking is anything but science...but on the other
hand: Knowing that a PDP-8 (which was newer than the PDP-7 on which
Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson started to develop UNIX) had about
0.004 MWIPS and a current desktop PC has something like 3500 MWIPS
let shine a total different, more brighter light to terms like
"computer pioneers"... :)

Those days a 'bit' was more a real thing than nowadays :)))

You should figure out why that setting is unknown. I suspect you didn't
put it in the right place in your config. Also your drive will fill up
with Mysql bin logs after serveral months with Mythtv without it working.

I ran mythfilldatabase and redirected it to a file. I don't know if
this list allows attachments or not, and it's probably too long to paste
here. At the end though I saw something strange:

Yes, sorry, I meant to type "UNIX MUAs" above. It is just an MUA and
not an MTA.

Is it a problem that I share my /usr/portage directory from another

I googled the expire_logs thing and what I found said to comment it out

I think that mailx is installed as a dependency on a gentoo system (unless it
is seriously stripped down?)

Just run mail in a terminal and it'll tell you if there is any messages
waiting for you. To send (outside your OS) you'll need to install and
configure ssmtp, or sendmail, or postfix, or any other MTA in portage. For
more
info look at man mailx or man mail.

OK, I haven't used Myth now in over a year so take this with a grain
of salt. From the log file it appears that your client isn't
connecting to the server which likely explains why you don't see the
programs. I wonder if you've tested connecting to mythconverg manually
via a terminal? Maybe something like /etc/my.cnf or one of the Myth
config files got messed up in the update.

 Good luck,
 Mark

I did, but as I said there where 350+ of them. And every time I tried
to emerge anything else, I couldn't because some package I needed was
listed in package mask. I got the package list that I added to
package.mask from /var/log/portage-logs for files dated from October 12
till 24. It was an epic fail. I couldn't even emerge -e world because
of those stupid masked package versions...

It's too late for this problem, but I'd recommend installing dmerge. It
takes a snapshot of what is installed after each emerge --sync, and lets
you roll back to a previous time (assuming the ebuilds are still in the
tree).

My understanding is that big iron's outstanding features were:
* Uptime
* Gobs and gobs and gobs of I/O. (Though I don't know the numbers)

If you want to compare feature sets, be sure to include those. :)

Mysql on camille is broken:

camille ~ # mysql -u root -p
mysql: unknown variable 'expire_logs_days=10'

I'll do some googling, but I think that sounds like a config file
directive. I'll probably do a rebuild of mysql as well...

It seems to me you have the mysql.txt file in the wrong location. mythtv
is telling you it's looking for it in /root/.mythtv, you have it in
/.mythtv/mysql.txt (which is quite strange, by the way. normally you
don't have configuration files under /).

[gentoo-user] [OT] How fast was ... ?

2011-10-26 Thread meino . cramer
Hi,

On www.archive.org I found videos of the series "Computer Chronicle"
with Richard Cheifet and Gary Kildall (the inventor of CP/M and the
founder of Intergalactical Digital Research, later known as Digital
Research or short DR).

Totally amazed by the things which were "brandnew" those days
(1985/1995) and are outclassed by any digital whristwatch nowadays I
became curious about a more exact definition of "faster" in this
area...

Or in other words:

Is it really true, that a mobile smartphone of today is as fast as
a big iron of 1975?

I know, that it is nearly totally false ;) to compare a big iron and
a smartphone on base on such few parameters such as clock speed,
amount of RAM, size of the screen and other isolated things, but
I dont intended to create a scientific work here... ;)

This is more for just the fun of it.

AND:
I would like to compare PRICES!

For example (totally fiction and not based on any knowledge...)

A PDP-11 costs 25000 $ and was/is as fast as my konqstar mobile phone for 30
EUR.

Are there any comparisons like that example with the PDP-11?
What was the real performance of those computers of the computer history?
How much more of "computing power" one do get today for what less
of money?
Is it really true, that I can carry the computing power of a
datacenter of 1985 in my pocket nowadays?

Thank you very much for any nice idea, story or of course comparison
in advance!i :)

Best regards,
mcc

There's mail-client/mailx which provides mail and is what you're
thinking of most likely (there were actually a few different
mail/Mail/mailx command line UNIX MTAs.)

But I wouldn't recommend it for general use (I prefer mutt) though I did
use it for such for a number of years in the 80s...

A long time ago there was command line syntax called
"mail". I have not used it in a long time, but I'm sure
the old unix sources are around, but it may require
sendmail to be installed. Dunno and my memory is
not reliable that far back (hell, last week's memories are

Very useful for a variety of uses

I did find this in portage; it seems useful, but
i Have never used this package

Come to think about it, the old mail command line
stuffage may have been BSDish, but too foggy to

[gentoo-user] Mythtv problems

2011-10-26 Thread Michael Sullivan
I've been having Mythtv problems for the last two or three days, and
everything I've tried to fix it has only made things worse. To start, a
little info:

camille ~ # emerge -pv mythtv

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R] media-tv/mythtv-0.23.1_p27077 USE="alsa css dbus dvb
jack lirc mmx perl python tiff (-altivec) -autostart -debug -directv
-faad -fftw -ieee1394 -lcd -pulseaudio -vdpau -xvmc"
VIDEO_CARDS="-nvidia -via" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Mythtv has worked on camille since I first installed it in 2005. Mythtv
worked the last time I started it (Oct 12), but I restarted it on the
24th and it didn't. When I start mythfrontend, the list of Upcoming
Recordings is empty, when I go to Programme Finder it's empty, as is
Program Guide. Previously Recorded works fine, as are Current
recordings but Watch TV doesn't - it says Please wait... for a long time
and then drops me back at the menu screen. Of course by this time
mythfrontend is usually griping about not being connected to the
backend. I ran mythbackend at the terminal prompt to find out why.
Here's what it said:

I tried also updating to a newer Version of xorg-xserver als well
using the 3.0.0.-generic-12 .

Neither did it.

The problem seems to be gone with a Linux Kernel 3.1.0
(no-gentoo-patch). I using now the lastet ATI-Driver from the Webpage,
but can't tell how stable it is. I'll see it in around a week.

But thanks for the help!
