Re: [gentoo-user] FTP Server

2006-06-06 Thread Dave Moore

Does anyone have any suggestions/preferences to a secure FTP server
for Gentoo?

Take a look at vsftpd. Their tagline: Very Secure FTP Daemon written
with speed, size and security in mind. It's in portage, and I've been
using it on a Gentoo system for some time now. I don't think it's ever
had more than a half dozen or so simultaneous connections, so I'm not
really giving it a workout, but I like it.

I would *really* recommend that he does not use Frontpage. It produces crap
code... I know nothing about Dreamweaver though.

The latest iteration of Dreamweaver produces pretty good code. Leaps
and bounds ahead of the previous versions and FP.

I'm assuming your reference to VSFTP is based on my recommendation of
vsftpd. vsftpd stands for very secure file transfer protocol daemon,
but make no mistake: This is an FTP daemon. The 'very secure' isn't
referring to a protocol, they're just saying their daemon is very
secure. I tend to agree.

This is just a small chunk. The 'reject: msgtyp: 6' continues for
hours prior as well. These errors always begin at certain times of the
day: 0600 and 1800 (6AM and 6PM) which makes me suspect that it is
something external to my system that is causing the errors. Also, as
you can see in the above example, I re-initialized pump at 07:13:33
and it very clearly states that it got a lease, though the errors
persist afterwards. Before I re-initialized pump, my applications were
behaving as though they had no internet connection (Gaim and Firefox),
and after I re-initialized, they found the net just fine, even though
those errors continued.

There's nothing stopping you from building from source, but Lilypond

lilypond-2.5.2 ~x86

Is there a reason that lilypond version is not up to date and
should I build myself ( without portage ) if I want to used it ?

Something along the lines of this will enable you to emerge it...

echo 'media-sound/lilypond ~x86' /etc/portage/package.keywords

As to why it is masked, I don't know.

'man portage' has a lot of useful info, you should check it out

Netwox (+ optionally netwag) has some neat tools. One that I have found handy
is the audible ping. Whenever it receives a successful ping response it beeps
your pc speaker. It may or may not have any benefit for you in this secenario
but it can be useful at times when you are muddling around and can't see your
screen, you can just listen for the beep, beep, beep then disconnect the
proper cable and it goes silent. Or in the reverse, plug in the right cable
and you start to hear the beep, beep, beep.

You can do that with ping -a too :D

Gentoo is pretty stable.. the installer isn't
try the old way it's way better and makes you more familiar with your system

I just finished (about a week ago) my first non-binary install of a
linux distribution, compiling from a stage3, starting with the 2006.0
Gentoo Minimal Install CD. As someone who is still relatively new to
Linux, I can attest that this was not very difficult, it simply
requires patience and a lot of looking things up. Now that I've got my
system up and running, I couldn't be happier

I'd recommend trying this route, I'm glad I did. If I had gone with a
graphical installer, I wouldn't know half of what I know now about
Gentoo.. it was a great learning process.
