[gentoo-user] ATI Radeon

2005-09-06 Thread Mark Humphrey
Anyone had any luck with getting an ATI Radeon 9550 (or 9600) for that
matter to work nicely under Linux (not neccessarily Gentoo specific)?

I have a TDK indi DVD. It works perfectly. I would also add that I
have excellent results with LG products as others have mentioned.

I also agree with the LG comments. They really are good. Only thing that
I can criticise is that the drives do get a bit fussy when it comes to
cheaper, lesser-known-brand disks - which my CD writer refuses to even
start a write on. Other than that, I've never had a bad write on my LG
CD writer.

I have a Lite-On DVD writer which is also very good. It writes on just
about anything except used toilet paper - which is what impressed me.
Plus it was quite a bit cheaper than the LG equivalent.

I am puzzled. First I thought that the Gb NIC on box A is somehow kaput

I would be deeply indebted to any person on this list that could shed
some light on this. Any hint what to investigate would be highly
appreciated. Really. This has troubled me for the last three days and I
would go as far as ship you a Windhoek Lager. ;-)

It would probably cost 10 times the price of the lager for shipping.
Maybe you should make it a case? I heard that Namibia Breweries is due
to stop making Heineken and it's going to SAB? :-)

The long timeout before password is probably DNS not working the port
properly. Just a guess.

Nope. Same behaviour when using IP addresses.

Have you tried - scp, in both directions?

Yes, did it now. Surprisingly it transfers data at 2xB/s both ways. Quite
different from sftp.

And which nfs? V3, V4? I suggest V4, if not.

V3 is what nfsstat says. Hmm. I've enabled both, V3 and V4, server- and
client-side. How do I force it to use V4?

Have you run top and netstat -rn on both boxes to see what they think the
routing is?

Routes are alright. Both boxes have a route to the class C network
(192.168.254.0/24) they are using.

Uwe

[gentoo-user] Re-Distro

Are there any legalities behind creating your own set of installation
CDs or DVDs - which contain specific packages available through the
Gentoo repository and exclude other default ones - for distribution to
clients?

[gentoo-user] Gentoo Installation

Does Gentoo have any sort of GUI for installation? I've followed the
Gentoo Handbook, but a GUI would obviously be nicer.

Yes, it's the Gentoo Installer project:
 http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/installer/

According to their roadmap they have already completed a functional
x86 installer but it's not officially released yet.

 Zac

Sounds good.

[gentoo-user] 1st Install

2005-07-14 Thread Mark Humphrey
Hi there

I'm new to Gentoo and I'm currently running WinXP at home. I'd like to
know how I should go about an installation with release 2005.0 to make
it a dual boot with XP, but upgrade to KDE 3.4.1?
