[gentoo-user] hald issue

2006-04-30 Thread Qv6

Folks;

Just merged hal, dbus, and ivman. dbus starts, but hald does not and there is
no hint in the /var/log/messages as to why. Running kernel 2.6.16 (kde-3.5.2)
Starting hald gives the following output, but nothing else

# /etc/init.d/hald start
 * Re-caching dependency info (mtimes differ)...
 * Re-caching dependency info (mtimes differ)...
 * Re-caching dependency info (mtimes differ)...
 * Re-caching dependency info (mtimes differ)...
 * Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer daemon ...
 [ !! ]

ivman cannot start cos it depends on a running hald

Any clues to help solve this issue 'll be appreciated.

Are there other easy to configure packages that offer the same functionality
as ivman out there?

TIA

I installed samba/swat. I went and enabled swat as an xinetd service

Where did you find swat to install? Last time I checked, swat is not

Apparently I missed a step and can't find any information on how to

Assuming you are using a reiserfs filesystem, resizing it is a 2-step
process. The first step is what you have accomplished. The second step
is:

resize_reiserfs -f /dev/vg/home

However, given the output of your vgdisplay with particular reference
to the lines below, I doubt that you can resize any logical volumes in
your volume group:

   Total PE 14313

   Alloc PE / Size 14313 / 55.91 GB

This is an aspect of Gentoo that I don't understand very well. the
various kioslaves block other packages and vice-versa. For example,
kdepim blocks kdepim-kioslaves, and kdebase blocks kdebase-kioslaves.
Same goes for kdemultimedia and kdemultimedia-kioslaves.

As a test, I unmerged kdepim and emerged kdepim-kioslaves and now my

You are referring to knetworkconf. This is currently not available in
kde under Gentoo. It is available in kde under Knoppix. In fact I don't
think it exist in kde - by default - under any other distro but
Knoppix.

The official link is http://knetworkconf.sourceforge.net/

Don't expect to find it with emerge knetworkconf. Just wait for

[gentoo-user] xfs issue

2005-10-27 Thread Qv6

Folks:

Just compiled a new kernel - 2.6.13-r3 (was using 2.6.11-r4), and
upgraded kde from 3.3.2 to 3.4.
On booting into the new kernel, the base system boots fine, but kde
hangs. It seems from the error that

xfs could not be started.
The error when I start xfs manually is:

gentoo# /etc/init.d/xfs start
   * Scanning font directories ... [ ok ]
   * starting X font server ...   [ ok ]
start-stop-daemon: stat /usr/X11R6/bin/xfs: No such file or directory
  [ !! ]

xfsinfo returns a no font server defined message

I tried emerg-ing xfs and got this error:

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy xfs hav been masked.

I've played with the package.keywords and package.unmask with no
positive result

Note: never had any issue with the previous kernel (2.6.11-r3),
Note: the pc is a Fujitsu Lifebook series laptop
Note: which xfs returns xfs: /usr/include/xfs
Any clues to sove this will be very mush appreciated.

  Update kde as usual, then

  # emerge -av --depclean

Make sure that portage doesn't offer to remove packages you want to
keep installed! Also a good idea to run revdep-rebuild afterwards.

As this version of kde is slotted I believe that after your
compilation finishes, and you find the new KDE in working state, you
 should:

 emerge prune kde
 emerge -va prune arts

and then run emerge -av --depclean

After depclean there will be a few leftovers from kde if I recall
well. You may find them looking at /usr/kde/3.3/ and finding packages
 that own files left there.

 qpkg -f /usr/kde/3.3/some-file
 emerge -va prune the-package-found-if-it-is-part-of-kde

Some files will not belong to any package, you may delete them, some
packages will have to be rebuild to use the new KDE version and leave
the old - dev-db/knoda in my case...

Surely you may cook a nice script that will find and clear the KDE
leftovers in more hackish way, but it was very hot the day I was
doing this and my brain cooling system was not working properly...
 :-)

Remember to run revdep-rebuild -p after you remove some packages. It
may help you to find ones that need to be unmerged, and it is anyway
a good habit to run it.

 HTH.
