[gentoo-user] Setting up a local portage/rsync mirror on OpenBSD

2007-10-25 Thread Samuel Baldwin
Hey everyone,

I've been considering setting up a local rsync mirror for my many
local machines. However, my primary server with all the hard drive
space (the only one that's any good) is running OpenBSD.

There's a few guides out there about running Portage mirrors on
Gentoo, but none that I can find about running one on OpenBSD. So I
turned here for advice.

Has anyone done this/have insight on doing this? Also, in the rsync
configuration, the line path=/usr/portage, does rsync work in a way
that I need to leave it like that, or can I arbitrarily redirect that
to wherever. Right now I have that as a symlink.

Thanks,

Re: [gentoo-user] Setting up a local portage/rsync mirror on OpenBSD

2007-10-25 Thread Samuel Baldwin
I don't use OpenBSD but I can assure you that there is nothing special
about portage's usage of rsync. Every howto about rsync servers and BSD
should work. Just look into the script for settings like recursion and
 compression.

Well, I mean't every gentoo one says emerge --sync, I was wondering
what commands I could run/throw into a script to grab exactly what I
want. Also, how would I get rsync to download/sync to a different
location (upstream syncing, not syncing with local clients), such as
/mnt/srv/portage/ or whatnot.

You can choose every directory you want. In fact, it's even better to
use another one so you don't need to exclude /usr/portage/distfiles and
 /usr/portage/packages.

Awesome.

Thanks,

Great frontend for dvd+rw-tools and cdrecord. Runs like a charm on

Also if you like bloatware/KDE, try app-cdr/k3b . Nicer GUI and runs

Re: [gentoo-user] Gentoo not starting with eth0, router not giving IP

2007-01-24 Thread Samuel Baldwin

What kind of router is it?

It's a DX-E401

check if dhcpd is enabled?

Yeah, it's running. However, it's setup to give me a static local IP to
my mac address, but that shouldn't matter, since It's been like that
long before the problem started.

The only thing new that I can think of
is the introduction of a switch to the network, between me and the router.
I don't think that should cause any problems, as it's serving Windows
and my OpenBSD server just fine, but I'm going to try taking it out of the
loop and see if Linux will get an IP.

[gentoo-user] Gentoo not starting with eth0, router not giving IP

2007-01-23 Thread Samuel Baldwin

Hello.

Recently after rebooting from Windows to Gentoo, I noticed I had no internet
access.
My router, which is set to give my mac address the same IP (192.168.0.104),
seems to
have decided NOT to do this anymore. Nothing has changed in my settings on
either my computer
or the router. I get the same thing for every OS (Gentoo LiveCD, Gentoo
installed, SuSE installed)
besides windows. I'm totally stumped. Sometimes eth0 gets enabled at startup
but gets no IP (SuSE),
other times (Gentoo Gentoo LiveCD) it doesn't and I have to run ifconfig
eth0 up.

Running route add eth0 192.168.0.1 returns eth0: Host name lookup

ifconfig returns:

[gentoo-user] XDM / GDM hangs when logging in.

2006-08-18 Thread Samuel Baldwin
I've recently installed GDM, XDM, and Fluxbox on a new Gentoo machine. When I boot to XDM, and login as root, everything is fine and dandy, with a nice Fluxbox desktop. When I login as my user, it just hangs on a black screen (which xdm used to do when it was pointing to a wm that didn't exist). CAD, CAB, and CAF1 do nothing, and I'm forced to reboot via the power button. I do not know why it is doing this (perhaps bad permissions for fluxbox?), and I would prefer not to do everything as root.
On the side, is it possible to customize the appearance of XDM (I know I can for GDM)?-- Samuel (shardz)Noha+Shardz Productions: nsproductions.co.nr

With those problems resolved, another arises.

I have since moved my computer back to my house (to stay). Upon initial boot, it complained about not finding certain things (gateway, nameserver), which is obviously the fact that I'm using dhcp. I then changed the settings in /etc/conf.d/net, then rebooted. It all seemed fine, but ping, emerge, and firefox dont work for anything public, and I'm wondering if I did something wrong. I changed all the settings in /etc/conf.d/net to resemble the dhcp settings in the handbook. Is there another command/file I need to edit?

Please, if anyone has some insight, please share it with me. I've got an abundance of other ethernet cards, if it sounds like this is a hardware error. I'd very much like to install Gentoo (I have a universal disk, I know I can do a networkless installation). Eventually, when I return home, I can use dhcp, but not for a few days, and I much rather have my computer running by then.
Also, does anyone know of a tool that allows you to play audio from a terminal? Basically, sending audio to standard audio out? I'd like to be able to listen to music (all .ogg and .mp3, if it makes a difference), while in runlevel 3. This is a side comment, and do not waste time answering this/looking it up if you don't know off hand.

[gentoo-user] Palm Desktop to Kontact?

2006-08-01 Thread Samuel Baldwin
Hello. A friend of mine runs a small business, all on Windows and Macintosh. After having an extremely good experience on my Linux machine, I have talked him into switching some of his computers to Linux. On his Business machine, he checks email, manages documents, browses the web, and manages a database of people, with Palm desktop. Since these tasks are fairly easy to be done on Linux, this will be his first machine. Unfortunately, his Palm Desktop database is so huge, it would take days to enter the database by hand into Kontact, or another program that does the same thing.
So, is there a way to get the information from Palm Desktop into Kontact, in a relatively easy manner? I don't mind doing some work and jumping though some hoops to get it done, but we definately want to avoid entering everything by hand.

(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822140166)Anyways, I was wondering if I would run into any problems with a 300GB HD, and if this particular one would give me problems.
It's a 250V (I think) Power supply and I've already got an Nvidia GeForce 6200 GT in there, so I'm also afraid of it being too much for my computer to handle. It would be my only HD in the machine though. I'm not sure if I should shoot for a smaller drive. I _need_ these 300GB's though. It takes me about 2 days to fill up a 40GB HD with everything, and that's just single-booting.
I am content with switching to a smaller drive though if it is impossible to run this certain HD. (Also, if anyone else knows any better deals for a similar/better HD, please, tell me). That's all for now-- Thanks

One problem, only one place to put the drive. It's a shitty eMachines case.I'm building a new comp over the summer, but I'm gonna add the 300 to this comp, and just re-do everything once I get a new mobo and case.

I'm planning on quad-booting. Or even more.40 GB's of Windows XP (I am a gamer. Some games I just cannot get to work under Linux)60 GB's of SuSE (I have an old pro version.)80 GB's of Gentoo 2006.0 (yay!)
20 GB's of Shared Files (Music, and whatever needs to be shared)then the rest will be unpartitioned, mainly for trying out some BSD's and other distro's. to be partitioned as appropriate. That's my game plan so far. It's subject to change easily.
Again, I've had trouble locating a PSU that will fit in the case. This is worse then getting a Dell. For my next comp, I'm obviously building my own (I got this for free in 2001). In a very, very large tower case. I'll probably then stick this current 40GB HD in here and use the comp as a household server running BSD/Linux and hosting LAN game servers and GNUMP3d, and whatever I see fit.

no, p4 need a lot of current, and big gpu's. But for most people a GOOD 360WPSU will work fine. The watt printed on the package does not say anything about the quality of thePSU or its maximum 'combined' output. So if you tell him to buy a 400W PSU is

True, it's not that usefull, but it does look nice. It provides a nice change of pace, so that way, when you're running a terminal in X, it doesn't look exactly like the regular shell. As far as making it harder to read, I've found it quite easy. If it conflicts with your background design, just change the text color. It is also possible to turn the transparency off, if needed.
