It's not what I thought it was. I ran into a bug that has since been
fixed. Looks like your userID is not a member of the audio group. That
can be fixed by logging in (or su-ing) as root, issuing the command

gpasswd -a userID audio (where userID is the regular user's account)

logging off the regular userID and then logging back in.

  2) Are you familiar with PAM? (That will determine how we proceed to
solve your problem, if it's what I think it is).

Well, it depends on how familiar you mean. ;-) I know what it is.
I'm relatively comfortable with configuring it, but I haven't changed
anything from the default, with the exception of pam_cracklib.

If someone has never heard of PAM, and runs into it head-on, it can be
rather dis-concerting. If you're comfortable with configuring it, keep
using it by all means.

Man, i had the same problem here, and it was somtehing related to ALSA
modules, try to search at gentoo's docs something about ALSA... here
i'm using esd to mix the sounds... (xmms-esd) try this too...

But the manual @ gentoo's web site for ALSA should work.

Good Luck

[gentoo-user] Audio and permissions.

2005-09-09 Thread gentuxx
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all. I'm sure this question has probably been asked before. So a
pointer to an archive of this list will suffice (I don't know where
one is).

Anyhow, I only get sound as root. Meaning, I've compiled the modules,
and configured the kernel for my equipment, and everything seems to
work, as root. I figure this has to be a permissions thing, but I'm
kind of at a loss as to where I need to give my user account access
(if that is indeed what needs to happen).

Any ideas or pointers would be great! If you need any info, please ask.

Thanks.
