What I would suggest is that you find some way to observe the hard
drive over a long period of time at considerable load. If there is a
problem, eventually it will show up in the SMART attributes.

It's not an ideal solution, and your problem may not be hardware
failure, but it would be a good idea to rule that out before pursuing
any other diagnostic methodologies.

That's my thoughts. It about has to be hardware at this point. The
other drive on the same cable is doing fine. It's not like I picked the
wrong driver in the kernel, the other drive would be slow to if that was
the case. The drive is pretty old to. Of course, it's not as old as
the others but it is a different brand too.

Thinking about getting a new 1Tb drive. ;-)

Maybe ZCAV will help?

http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/zcav/

"The ZCAV program which I initially released as a separate package tests the
performance of different zones of a hard drive. It does not write any data (so
you can use it on full file systems). It can show why comparing the speed of
Windows at the start of a hard drive to Linux at the end of the hard drive
(typical dual-boot scenario) isn't a valid comparison."

Hi folks,

I am in the process of moving my OS from drive to drive and thought I
would test to see which drive is the fastest. I got some strange
results when I tested them

Try bonnie and bonnie++

both in portage.

I don't think bonnie will help on this. I have not used it but I don't
think testing it is going to fix the issue. I already know it is slow,
I just don't know why it is slow. The other two drives on here are fast
including the other drive on the exact same cable. Makes me wonder what
is going on.

If you know of a way bonnie will help, let me know. I don't have it
installed and don't really know much about it except that it does tests.
