Re: [Geoserver-devel] The GWC UI is gone/not working? (on master)

2017-09-07 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies
I also noticed last week that seeding does not appear to work (for that
Los Angeles FAA GeoTIFF discussed on the user list). I saw a message
that seeding sometimes fails the first time, but this error seemed
persistent. I was not sure whether this was a problem with my
configuration (I was running from Eclipse), and the user preferred
Jukka's solution. I was planning to test seeding with 2.12-beta when it
is available.

Kind regards,
Ben.

http://cloudsdi.geo-solutions.it/geoserver/gwc/rest/seed/test:SENTINEL1_MOSAIC

returns (if you have admin access):

Also, going from the "Caching Defaults" page and following the link "Go to
the embedded GeoWebCache home page"
which points to:

http://cloudsdi.geo-solutions.it/geoserver/gwc

results in a 404.
To make sure it was not something local to that server I've downloaded a
nightly build, Sept 7th, and
with the vanilla configuration the issue is exactly the same.

I'm guessing this is a result of the GWC REST API migration but... we
really need that UI, removing it is
a major regression. This is a release blocker

Re: [Geoserver-devel] New developer member

2017-09-07 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies

Welcome, Alexandru.

If you have a .NET background, I am going to guess that you are
developing on Windows. We are especially looking for Windows developers
because we have no active core Windows developers and several reports of
the build failing on Windows that we are unable fix because core
developers are on Ubuntu, Debian, and MacOS. If you have trouble
building on Windows, it might not be your fault. You might need to build
with -DskipTests to get started. You might also find an Ubuntu virtual
machine useful; any of your pull requests will be tested with Travis CI
using Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty).

GeoSolutions have a Windows build server:
http://winbuild.geo-solutions.it/jenkins/

These important builds are failing:
http://winbuild.geo-solutions.it/jenkins/job/GeoTools-Master/
http://winbuild.geo-solutions.it/jenkins/job/GeoServer-Master/

If we can get the build working on Windows again, it would give us
confidence that GeoServer works properly on Windows. You might be in a
position to be of great assistance to us. We are here to help.

Kind regards,
Ben.

Hi Alexandru,
to get started you might want to check out the developer manual:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/developer/

More importantly, GeoServer is often just "protocol glue" on top of
facilities provided by GeoTools,
so to be proficient with GeoServer you first need to know GeoTools well.
Luckily, unlike GeoServer, GeoTools has a nice set of tutorials and docs
for developers (in GeoServer
it's mostly "look at the code and learn"):

http://docs.geotools.org/

Once you are proficient with GeoTools you can go back to GeoServer and
start looking at doing
some bug fixing. That's actually how I got started 10 years ago, when Chris
Holmes hired me he
had me to do only bug fixing for one month long, full time, before moving
to anything else
(I was already a GeoTools developer, so that part was covered).

Hope this helps!

Cheers
Andrea

This is happening because in GridSet.getClosestIndex does not use Math.abs, so if the difference between x and posX, y and posY is negative, the check does not trigger (in the -180 example, the difference on the y axis is -0.5)

Andrea,

The UI hasn't been removed, but is in a new location.
"/seed/ui_form/{layer}" I think it would be best at some point to move the
UI out of the rest module for GWC.

I've just checked, GeoSolutions has exactly zero deploys on GDAL 2.x, so
no, we don't know if it works with some or any format, with light load or
high load, in any shape or form.
If we did, GeoServer would likely be using 2.x by now (after some load
testing, a single hiccup in GDAL will take down the entire GeoServer
process,
so upgrading is not a matter to be taken lightly).

from the "tile layers" page results in a JSON file instead of the usual
HTML page, e.g.:

http://cloudsdi.geo-solutions.it/geoserver/gwc/rest/seed/test:SENTINEL1_MOSAIC

returns (if you have admin access):

{

   - long-array-array: [ ]

}

Also, going from the "Caching Defaults" page and following the link "Go to
the embedded GeoWebCache home page"
which points to:

http://cloudsdi.geo-solutions.it/geoserver/gwc

results in a 404.
To make sure it was not something local to that server I've downloaded a
nightly build, Sept 7th, and
with the vanilla configuration the issue is exactly the same.

I'm guessing this is a result of the GWC REST API migration but... we
really need that UI, removing it is
a major regression. This is a release blocker

Cheers
Andrea

Re: [Geoserver-devel] Reverting a change making our user life difficult with GDAL

2017-09-07 Thread Amiram Rahav
Well, I think that most of us know Geoerver does work with GDAL 2.x, at
least some of the formats do.

Maybe add the bindings back so people don't get hard errors, and then add a
note saying Geoserver should work with GDAL 2.x however once you build GDAL
you should replace the bindings manually?
That note will be intended for more advanced users, so instructions on how
to do so shouldn't be included.

I mean, technically. if you built the latest gdal against the same swig
version the 1.9.2 bindings were built against, the bindings will still
"work" without having to replace the jar.

Just my my 2¢.

I'm not sure how long creating new binaries will take (we should also evaluate
moving to a 2.x GDAL version).

I agree that we should consider moving to GDAL 2.x, since that seems to be what
most people are actually using these days, and I think some people have already
had success using it with the current GeoServer.

I believe a line must be drawn between aspiration and reality. The idea is
certainly good, but what if a year passes before
we can dedicate resources to do this upgrade? Should the users be left in a
limbo since then, unable to get a supported
module to favor one that is not even packaged?

To be clear: As long as you follow the current install
instructions,
the current GDAL module works fine. The bindings are included in the gdal zip
linked
from that page, and the instructions explicitly tell you to copy the bindings
into your WEB-INF/lib.

The main issue is that most users are missing this step in the instructions, so
including the bindings jar with the gs-gdal plugin (as was done before) would
make things a bit easier.

Changing the packaging to include this jar again is relatively trivial, and can
be done independently of upgrading the binding jar.

That said, if someone is using a newer version of GDAL with newer bindings,
including the binding jar by default could cause other conflicts (I would
expect to see issues with GDAL 2.0 and higher).

Given that, if we start including the binding jar again, and don't upgrade it,
we should make this clear in the GDAL install instructions (although that
didn't seem to help much in this case).

More importantly, GeoServer is often just "protocol glue" on top of facilities
provided by GeoTools,so to be proficient with GeoServer you first need to know
GeoTools well.Luckily, unlike GeoServer, GeoTools has a nice set of tutorials
and docs for developers (in GeoServerit's mostly "look at the code and learn"):

Once you are proficient with GeoTools you can go back to GeoServer and start
looking at doingsome bug fixing. That's actually how I got started 10 years

long, full time, before moving to anything else(I was already a GeoTools
developer, so that part was covered).

facilities provided by GeoTools,
so to be proficient with GeoServer you first need to know GeoTools well.

Cheers
Andrea

Hello everyone,
My name is Alexandru MECA and I intend to be involved as a volunteer developer

Hope exists a former member for new contributors.

Re: [Geoserver-devel] GWC tests failing with no security dispatcher

2017-09-07 Thread Ian Turton
It might be that but my concern is that it is only occuring on my branch
not on master so I suspect it is something I changed in WPS?

Re: [Geoserver-devel] GWC tests failing with no security dispatcher

2017-09-07 Thread Jody Garnett
Thanks David, looks like JTS 1.14 upgrade got you going again.

I had a bit of a scare with
https://github.com/GeoWebCache/geowebcache/pull/531 failing on
build.geoesrver.org but working locally. After building geotools and
letting the dependencies seep through GWC now builds.

With that merged travis could finally evaluate -
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/pull/2508 Which failed ... in the
YSLD module.

Digging into it there are two test failures in YSLD StyleControlerTest -
this is a good test in that it is very brittle of any converters are messed
up. I decided to ignore the tests so we would have a working build and we
can dig into why those tests are failing tomorrow morning.

I have some early morning meetings and will join you around 9:30 PST,
please coordinate on slack and we can get these fixed and the beta release
out tomorrow.
