I'm veeery sorry, I've totally missed this! This is exactly what I was
asking for (and what some gimp users asked me for gimp).
I tested cvs gimp with last kubuntu/debian kde desktop and it rocks!

Plug-ins are typically developped outside CVS, so they're not in the
repository. They didn't get put into the registry either, but, well, the
registry sucks a bit and badly needs replacing.

Since Divyanshu developed plugins that can easily live outside the core
he did not commit his stuff into CVS. I'd very much welcome if he'd
make his plugins available soon.

Regarding the inclusion in 2.4: Maybe the jpeg2000 plugin could be
included, although it relies on the not very popular obenjpeg library.
The other plugins are very rough and still need tweaking, before they
could be included.
