Re: editing layer's mask

Hi,

I know, but what I want to do is to modify the alpha values of the
 affected layer.

?

When I apply Mask to a Layer the alpha values are saved
permanently so you can't paint anymore.

Painting with colors works and and painting with black to have
transparent doesn't work anymore if you apply the mask.

So create a new layer for to paint with colors and don't apply the mask
before you finished.

This is really the problem and
the only solution I found is to use Levels or Curves to modify them.

levels == layers ? Then you're right.

Hi!

I applied mask to a layer, but now I want to modify it and I can't
find any way how to do this. There is nothing like "Modify Layer
Mask" option. I tryed creating a new channel and modify alpha
values but it doesn't modify the alpha values of the Layer Mask.
What to do now? (gimp 1.1.24)

Do an "Add Layer Mask". It's in the same menu with "Apply Layer Mask".
But it would be a plain mask, not the mask you've applied!!!

Image-"Layers"-"Alpha to selection" should be useful for you, too.

Also, have a look at the channels dialogue.

Hope it helps!

In Corel Photopaint, one can load a selection from a gray
scale image. Is it possible to do that in GIMP?

no, I am saying that when I applied the mask, the only way I can modify
Alpha values is using leves or curves, seleccting "Alpha" on the pop-up
menu and then modifying _only_ alpha values of the layer. But its a pain
in the ass doing it this way.
