While filling DON'T use bucket - You'll end up with thin white lines
inside Your county.
Use brush and You'll get nice sharp borders.

Other option is:
1) Use wand (Press [u]), click on county
2) Set county's color as foreground color (press [o], click on county)
3) Turn selection into path (icon in paths card/window)
4) Deselect county / select all (press [control] + [a])
5) Paint along the path (icon in paths card/window) - in pop up window
You select thickness of line.
6) Repeat steps 1 to 5 for each color (for each county)

Good luck

Hi Elle,

Peter had this in mind, see
http://blog.mmiworks.net/2009/09/gimp-single-mode.html

It seems that this part is just not implemented yet.

Somehow I'm also missing parts of the spec:
http://gui.gimp.org/index.php/Single-window_mode_specification#docking_and_tearing_off

I read through the above two links. It seems that being able to resize
the Tabs bar is something that was intended to be and might eventually
get implemented? When I decided to try Single Window mode for the first
time, I actually did expect that the Tabs bar would resize by dragging
the edges, but of course it stubbornly refused to.

In multiple windows mode the Toolbox gets as narrow as you like in. But
in Single Window mode the Toolbox width is determined by the widest
docker. It would be nice to be able to make the Toolbox as narrow as you
like in Single Window mode.

There are places in the user preferences where the relative size of
thumbnails can be set. But those preferences don't seem to affect the
Tabs bar thumbnail size in Single Window mode.

Thanks! for the links.

Elle

Or perhaps/also the option to see the file name when hovering over the

No, we just made that permanently visible on purpose. You can however
move the tabs to the side to gain vertical screen space (Windows menu)

Here's the problem I'm trying to solve by using Single Window mode:

While editing an image I like to have a white "surround" around the
image to simulate a mat around a print. The reason for the white
surround is because of how the eye adapts to luminance contrast. If I
like the finished image, then it will eventually be displayed with a
white surround. So it makes sense, in fact it's pretty important, to
have a similar surround while editing the image.

Setting the image window canvas padding color is easy. However, when
zooming in and then back out, or switching to full screen and back,
often the image isn't automatically recentered in the image window.

In multiple window mode, after recentering the image (control-j), the
image window is the same size as the image (and sometimes smaller), so
then I need to resize the image window to restore the canvas padding.

As I change the zoom percentage and also switch to full screen mode and
back fairly frequently, I'm spending a lot of time repositioning,
recentering, and resizing the image window, just to restore the white
canvas padding surround and get the image centered in same.

In Single Window mode, control-j recenters the image on the canvas
without requiring the additional steps of repositioning the image and
resizing the canvas. But the Tab bar takes up some of the space that
would otherwise be devoted to the canvas padding.

The Tab bar shows thumbnails. The Images docker in the Toolbox shows
thumbnails and also file names, which are essential for cases where all
the open images are similar (for example, one denoised, one not denoised).

Speaking for myself, the Tab bar is always in the way and never useful.
Is there an easy source code modification for completely removing the
Tab bar from the Single Window interface?

[Gimp-user] Close up color gaps

2014-02-28 Thread Yanno
I've got a map raster which shows different areas (of the UK in this case) in
different colors according to rainfall ie a rainfall heatmap. However, the
county borders are in thick white which looks poor. I would like the same
map only without borders ie the colours just to change according to the
colour of the area. A plain English way to describe it would be for the
different colours to "move towards each other" to meet in the middle.

Here's an example image...

I'd like to close up those whites so there are only red and orange patches
ie for the white border to be filled with the colour on either side. The rub
is I want to keep the colors solid- no blurring/feathering etc

I've tried various combinations of blur and sharpen, edge detection and so
on but can't seem to do it. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Yanno

Short version: Nope.

Long version: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486902

My opinion: People are asking for having alpha channels on all layers,
but I find this pretty insane. I'd prefer a toggle in the new layer
dialog, to make it at least a little bit useful ;)

When working with multiply layer images, GIMP seems to automatically add
an alpha channel to every new layer.

Is there a reason why new layers automatically get an alpha channel?

Is there a way to tell GIMP to not automatically add alpha channels?

[Gimp-user] How to close the Tab bar in Single Window mode

2014-02-28 Thread Elle Stone
I have all the tools and other dialogs that I want to use in the Toolbox
on the left side of the Single Window. One of the dialogs is the
"Images" dialog, which suffices for switching from one image to another.

If the Images dialog is already in the Toolbox, the Tab bar becomes
redundant. Also the Tab bar is visually distracting and takes up too
much space on the screen, being 85 pixels or nearly an inch wide on my
not so large screen.

Is there a way to close the Tab bar in Single Window mode?
