An interesting test. I believe your test image has to be flattened to work? It would make a good topic for Level 3, having a student analyse the different hex levels of the grayscale conversion methods and to try and reverse engineer the algorithms which may have been used. I'm attaching a gimp image in color which "detects" which method is used when turning it to grayscale. (Could be used to demonstrate to students that grayscale conversion is not always the same). I was entertaining spending more time with the image, perhaps making a version where there is blue snow that make the writing invisible until grayscale is applied. (Just a bit busy with marking and lesson planning at the moment) But thank you for your replies - great information. LOL (with all due respect) Thank you, rich, your answer was all I was looking for. But that raises another question (which you are free not to give me an answer): what's the purpose of the buttons "Lock pixels" and "Lock transparency"? Specially the first, if activating it "locks" pixels *and* transparencies? Thank you again, anyway!! You have the pixel lock on, which prevents painting on that layer. The **alpha lock** prevents painting on the alpha channel but there is no function to **only** paint on the transparent area but not the opaque (white) area. If you want to paint in that transparent area then a couple of ways Draw a selection constraining to the required area. or Make a new transparent layer under the base layer and paint on that. rich: www.gimp-forum.net -- rich2005 (via www.gimpusers.com/forums) ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list

[Gimp-user] Printing error: Cairo error: out of memory
I have a Win 10 pro computer/a HP Deskjet 9800 printer/I try to print a photo using Gimp 2.8.18/I get the message: An error occurred while trying to print: Cairo error: out of memory. I have tried different settings/less dpi. The photo is a 5x7/photo size is 58,879 KB. Printer has no expandable memory capability. This is the only program that gives me this message while printing this photo. Wanted to use Gimp to see if it would give me a better saturated print/better color/etc. This maybe one of those situations where this error is the only option I get. Re: [Gimp-user] When black and white is not black and white
You may try Colors -> Component -> Decompose, then select LAB space, BW image is the L, thats a lot better than anything else I have tried Regards -Original Message- From: LancerTo: gimp-user-list@gnome.org Cc: notificati...@gimpusers.com Date: Tue, 06 Jun 2017 06:02:29 +0200 Subject: [Gimp-user] When black and white is not black and white I am a school teacher. One of the checks I ask students to do in order to test the contrast of their graphics work, is to convert the images to grayscale and see whether images are still clear. There are two methods students are using to convert their images to grayscale for this test... Method 1: flatten image, then Colors > Hue-Saturation => slide the saturation slider down to zero. Method 2: image => mode => grayscale Either of these methods results in a grayscale image, but the grays are not exactly the same. For example, if I have absolute red (#FF) next to blue, the grayscaled-blue may match the grayscaled-red depending on the tone *and* the method used. Method 1: Absolute red (#FF) will grayscale-match absolute blue (#FF) Method 2: Absolute red (#FF) will grayscale-match a slightly lighter shade of blue (#2626FF) Why are the two methods of grayscale having a different result? I would have thought that conversion to grayscale would be the same process as dragging down the saturation of an image. ...and given that they are different, which is the better method to use in terms of testing for contrast in media assignments? -- Lancer (via www.gimpusers.com/forums) ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list

For printing of photos edited in GIMP we recommend adopting a color management workflow with late binding to CMYK by adopting PDF/X[1] worflows [2]. GIMP is already used successfully by many users with such workflows. For cases where late binding workflows are not possible the GIMP 2.10 series will hopefully gain both support for and good control over CMYK separation when exporting for instance to TIFF; integrating functionality that currently is possible with additional third party GIMP plug-ins. There might be future improvements to how GIMP deals non-RGB data in the 3.x series or beyond, probably including direct support for opening/importing CMYK files without a conversion to RGB - adding such capabilities should be more easily possible now that image processing is abstracted away and encapsulated in GEGL ops. When it comes to more radical departures from RGB, I've personally worked on, and have plans for continued work on code experiments with color that eventually might lead to CMYK being just one of possible sets of plate configuration for process inks / spot-colors / paints used for any simulated duo, tri, quad(or more)-tone print plate configuration for various colored substrates - using spectral characterisation along the lines of [3]. 1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDF/X 2: https://www.scribus.net/svn/Scribus/trunk/Scribus/doc/en/pdfx3.html 3: http://www.color.org/CxF_test.xalter With regards, Øyvind Kolås -- http://pippin.gimp.org/ https://patreon.com/pippin ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list
