Re: [Gimp-user] No luck loading Gimp on MacBook Pro

2017-11-21 Thread Jeffry Killen
I have successfully installed Gimp on Mac mini and Macbook Pro running Yosemite
( haven't
upgraded for various reasons). In Preferences there is a panel called Security
and Privacy.
I am assuming it is virtually the same on your system. It has a section titled
"Allow apps downloaded from" with several options represented by radio buttons.
I have mine set to "Mac app store and identified developers"

Since the Gimp developers don't fall into this category, the system will not
allow it to install.
HOWEVER. When the dialog telling me that it is from unidentified developers
comes up
during the install process, it has an option for making an exception for the
current app.

I used this to let the system continue installing it. It also requires an admin
user and password.
Perhaps you missed this step, or it may not be available to you. If it isn't
then someone else
will have to offer advice/info.

As a conjecture, based on Apple's current business model, opened source apps
may be being
pushed out the way in favor of proprietary and favored programs and authors,
with the cover
story being security concerns.

Re: [Gimp-user] No luck loading Gimp on MacBook Pro

2017-11-21 Thread Ross Martinek
This works on Sierra, might work on High Sierra:

(You can restore the ‘Anywhere’ option to Gatekeeper.)

While the reasoning may be understandable, helping to prevent nefarious apps
that could include malware from running on your Mac, the end result is a bit
draconian, since it can prevent you from running many Mac apps that are
available from hobbyists, small-scale developers, or open source projects.

In previous versions of the Mac OS, you could set Gatekeeper to allow apps to
run from the:

• • App Store

• • App Store and identified developers

• • Anywhere

The Anywhere option is missing from macOS Sierra, but you can re-enable the
option with this simple Terminal trick.

Launch Terminal, located in your /Applications/Utilities folder.

Enter the following command at the Terminal prompt:

sudo spctl --master-disable (Note that there is a double dash, not an
em-dash, in front of “master."

Press enter or return.

You’ll be asked for the administrator password. Enter the password and press
enter or return.

To verify that the Anywhere option has been restored:

Open System Preferences and select the Security & Privacy preference pane.

Select the General tab.

You’ll see that the Anywhere option is once again available.

Am using High Sierra, but Mac will not verify download no matter what I do.

Tried versions #18 & #22

Hi menglor,

The process you describe will give you images of different sizes if the
originals have different DPI values, because when you scale an image to
be a certain number of inches in size, the GIMP looks at the DPI
resolution of the image first, then scales the image to be X number of
pixels wide/tall based on that DPI and the physical dimensions you specify.

Example: A 300 DPI image scaled to 1" x 1" will come out 300 pixels
wide. A 150 DPI image scaled to 1" x 1" will come out 150 pixels wide -
half "size" of the 300 DPI one.

Scaling images by adjusting their size in inches (or centimeters, etc.)
is rarely done. Useful results require resetting the DPI of images as
necessary, so a set of images of the same size in inches, cm or etc.
will also be the same size in pixels.

Or can multiply the size in inches of the output images you want by the
DPI you want, to get the correct dimensions in pixels for /all/ the
images intended to be the same size when printed. From that point on,
you can just scale your whole batch of images to the same size in pixels
and ignore the size "in inches."

The DPI setting in an image is only a number recorded in the file
header; changing the DPI of an image changes nothing but that one
number, and as far as I know it does not affect the actual or displayed
/ printed size of the image, except when scaling the image in an editor
like the GIMP.

Typical DPI values:

300 DPI for high quality print
150 DPI for office documents etc. where "good enough is good enough"
96 DPI for on-screen display
72 DPI - a legacy default setting based on printers' "point" size

Note that doubling the DPI of an image while maintaining the same print
size when scaling, multiplies the size of the resulting file on disk by
about 4x. Exporting images in lossless PNG format (vs. lossy JPG) for
maximum print quality also creates much larger file sizes on disk. So
big, high quality print jobs can take up a lot of space in storage or
time in transit across the network.

You also mentioned printing via a Word document, and that the sizes you
get are a little off. I think that's to be expected, because word
processors were not intended for "pre-press" work, a.k.a. printing
images with high accuracy.

I use Scribus, a Free desktop publishing application, for pre-press
work. Make your images, put them on the page exactly where you want
them, export the file as PDF and print that: Viola, accurate results.

For really precise positioning on page, i.e. when printing on peel and
stick label stock or etc., it may be necessary to print a test page,
measure any placement errors, and adjust the Scribus master document to
get your required results from that particular printer.

Import the largest layer first?

I've tried Fit Canvas to Layers. It doesn't fix the problem.

Any guidance would be most appreciated.

Which program?

I ask because if that program is smart enough to resize the layers, perhaps
there is an
option to not do that.

Layer -->Layer to image size on a smaller layer will fill the remaining
space with alpha or
background color depending on what the layer is capable of.

For the restrictive "no bigger" that you likely have in mind, the answer
is: No.

Nothing will prevent anyone from printing any image at any size.

But you control the number of original pixels they get.

There is Image -> Scale to do this, but I assume you already know how to
scale images to any desired size in pixels.

The customers can scale the image up again, of course, and have the
interpolation method of their choice invent new pixels from what they
got. These do not necessarily look the same, so I guess this would
suffice to fulfill your goal.

Gimp does not 'automatically' crop anything. It depends on the procedure used.

Please give more details of your work flow.

If you copy, paste and **anchor** the Floating-Selection it crops to the size of
the layer pasted into.

If you copy, paste and **To New Layer** then the size is retained but can be
larger than the canvas size. In that case use Image -> Fit Canvas to layers.

If you open several images using File -> Open-as-Layers then the canvas size is
the size of the first image opened. Use Image -> Fit Canvas to Layers. However,
the obvious is open the largest image first.
